So what's happened to this handsome little tyro? Is it possible there's been some of this "coaching" thing going on?

Tbf he looked the shit when he first came through. I know his defensive ability outweighs his attacking tendecies, which is unfashionable around these parts, but still.

See the thing is, he did well today. But I think there's a huge amount of 'wow he's not altogethor shit, ergo let's massively overrate his performance' going on.

He got burned four or 5 times by Mirallas and Delofeu. Fairly easily too. And he offered zero going forward. So let's get some perspective.

On the flipside; he was strong in the tackle, read the game well, kept it simple, and linked up well plenty of times. It was a really encouraging performance from someone who I thought was horrendously shit. But let's not get carried away here.

OMG!
And Modo picked Mignolet, Lucas and Suarez ahead of him in the MOM thread.

He's obviously trolling the shit out of us.

Played ok in spells with some good tackles.

I don't think he'll properly make the breakthrough though. He seems too timid.

They've been coaching him well - playing him at left back as well as right, and as a wing back on both sides as well.

He's definitely improved. He has filled out a bit too.

I agree with Ryan a bit. As in, lowered expectations are clouding our assessment of him. I'm not taking anything away from him though, he did excellently. He really knew what was expected out of him in the derby. I won't be clamouring for him to be a starter for us now but he did very well today. Happy for him.

I'm not aware that anyone over-rated him today. But he's now done better than many expected at RB and LB. Nothing exceptional but fairly solid. So he's looking like a handy young squad player. Is that over-rating him?

Hopefully McLaughlin will soon get a chance because his game is better than Flanno's, he offers more going forward and he's been consistently impressive for some time now.

I hope so too.

Just back to Flanagan for a moment again, he played well without doing anything exceptional. I think he is a limited footballer but made up for it today with a battling spirit. He obviously understands what the derby means to us and wasn't going to let us down. He was a bit lost against Arsenal and at times was beaten easily today. Mirallas stepped inside him a few times and Delofou (sp?) looked to have the beating of him.

Disappointed with Kelly's progression btw. He was once a filler for right or left back for us. Doesn't seem to have the confidence of the manager at all.

I think the manager likes Kelly but they're all getting quite concerned about how slowly he's coming back. He really seems to be struggling, mentally definitely and maybe physically, too. They tried pushing him on and it didn't work. Now they're going slower but it's a bit perplexing.

He looked better than I thought but at times still out of his depth.

He needs a pan of scouse down him too.

Perhaps Brendan should have someone (maybe Ian Ayre) bring him a steak every day.

Thought he was solid as a rock for us today. Strong in the tackle, made some vital interceptions and used the ball well.

Fair enough he got done a few times but on the whole, very encouraging performance. The lad isn't as bad as people make out.

Gonna be interesting to see how he does if he gets a run in the side now.

We need the Academy to produce players like this - who can fill in every once in a while and perform and a decent level. The Mancs have had this benefit for years, and it's allowed them to focus on buying 1-3 excellent players per window instead of 5-7 good ones.

He makes those full blooded "everything in" scouse tackles that Gerrard and Carragher used to make. That for me, puts him in my good books.

I thought he was our 2nd best player after Lucas. Suarez not far behind.

Well done john.

From the perspective of a former youth player, local lad from the academy, making his derby debut, I thought he did very well.
From the perspective of a player representing LFC, vying to get 3 points to get to the top of the table, I thought he had an okay game but did horribly a few times when players went past him like he wasn't there (where he'd bizarrely only trot back after that, rather than run for his life), and his forward play, when he tried to get involved, was shite.

Good squad player to have. Interesting to see how he develops this season; could be an option if we want to play with a more defensive fullback.

He made my Top 3 for the day and I am made up for the lad. That said when Enrique returns (and even he is not to everyone's liking on here) then Flanno won't get near the first team. Which says a lot.

It was funny when he did one of those yesterday. When he started out a few years ago he did nothing but those. Every game you'd hear these loud crunching tackles. They seemed pre- historic and crazy yet strangely engaging because he was this tiny but fearless kid. It seemed impossible he'd ever play for the first team because he'd be sent off every time. So he's actually evolved quite dramatically in the past three years. His pug- like face belies quite a decent footballing brain, and he really does respond well to coaching, so good luck to the lad.

Did well yesterday but he was exposed badly when Delfou (?) came on and started running at him. Much better than I expected him to be, against Hull he should start on the right and let Johnson switch to the ledt side
