Favourite non-Liverpool player

I was watching Netflix and up pops a documentary about one of my favourite players never to have played for us... the Divine Ponytail, Roberto Baggio.

Now I know the mere mention of a nickname, let alone one as ridiculous as "The Divine Ponytail", will probably send Silver Sean into an apoplectic rage. So I humbly present a video of this exquisite genius by way of a peace offering.

His skills were mesmerising to watch. That goal at 0:31 brings to mind Suarez at Newcastle. Effortlessly outrageous. Were he born two decades later, he'd have slotted into Bobby's role like a glove. His persistent injury problems also mean he'd have no issues feeling right at home in our current team. It's no wonder- my boys tried to imitate his twists and turns for years growing up only to break their own ankles.

Who was your favourite non-Liverpool player? Videos appreciated.

Baggio is pants compared to the Real Ronaldo. No contest. Not even close.

The best footballer i've ever seen, past, present and probably future. Even Messi himself said Ronaldo was the best.

He was a phenomenon and you won't see the likes of him for a very, very long time. One of a kind and from a different planet.

I absolutely loved Van Basten growing up ... Pity I only got to Milan after his ankles started going ker plunk:

Was also a big fan of Benni ... he was the first footy star of the new South Africa ... here's when he made Liverpool fans happy:

Ronaldo too - he had everything. Also loved the way he could go from 0-60 in a way that made everyone else around him look like they were standing still.

Ronaldinho - the ultimate flair player. His time at Barca was some of the most entertaining football I've watched. Almost every game there some crazy bit of skill to make you go daaamn.

It feels like we've lost that a little bit in football these days and I wonder whether the change can be represented in Messi's career. I've looooooooved watching Messi over the years but particularly in the first part where there was more dribbling past players and what not. At some point it seemed to become a lot more clinical (same with Fake Ronaldo). You can't argue with the effectiveness og perfecting the end product - the numbers speak for themselves - but miss some of the flair to go with it sometimes.

Agree entirely. The sheer audacity of football has gone out the window in recent years. Now the only filth you see is exquisite passes. I miss beating 3 players with a step over then elastico and an audacious rounding of the keeper. End product is key now, not the style points and process.

Ronaldo and ronaldinho as mentioned, but I loved Totti as well. He played the game with an effortless elegance. I could watch his lobs over the keeper for hours

@i_rushie - Your question asks more questions than provokes answers. There's three hours until the test starts. Eng Vs NZ. My summer is just beginning. The seasons over and it's 2 weeks until the Euro's. I enjoy threads like these. May I expand the question?

Non LFC

Best player seen and unseen
Suarez / Zidane
Most Likeable
Cafu
Most detestable
Ramos
The best opposition player you love because they are so shit they regularly fuck up their team (in some way).
I've no idea where is now but Alexis Sanchez was great fun while at Utd. Redcafe used to be hilarious when he was playing. £200,000 a week. Do you remember the piano playing introduction video.... Fuck me what a treat he was!

Zidane, the guy was just unreal in terms of first touch, balance and vision. Loved watching him play.

As for Baggio, yeah he was a superb player, I don't think he ever recovered from the pretty miss in 94. Italy seemed to excel in producing those no10 types who didn't have pace but could but just had amazing technique. Baggio, Totti, Del Piero, Zola

Good call on the real Ronaldo. For a couple of years he was literally unplayable.

I loved watching Xavi play. The way he controlled games and used the ball. He was the heartbeat of that team.

Most of my favourite football memories are from the late 90s or early 2000s. I suppose your best memories are from when you were a kid.

Some offbeat names:

I loved Djalminha at Deportivo - audaciously skilful footballer. Probably wouldn't get a game at all today because he was a total showboat with a poor workrate.

From the Prem, some of the less famous names - I really liked Marian Pahars at Southampton. I also was a big fan of Kinkladze and his mazy dribbling runs.

I was obsessed with Oliver Kahn when I was younger (at the time I thought I might be a goalkeeper).

Favourite outfield player (non LFC) probably either of the Brazil legends - Ronaldinho & Ronaldo. They did things I'd never seen before on a football pitch.

Also hard one to explain but I used to always look out for Lilian Thuram after watching him dominate as a powerful full back for Parma.

I had a soft spot for the Dutch team of the mid 90s.

Edgar Davids was a favourite for some reason, happy to get stuck in.

Bergkamp is probably one of my favourite non-LFC players ever. He was just class. Touch, passing and could score the odd goal.

I remember the great Titus Bramble had a habit of scoring. For us.

I envied man United when they had Schmeichel and Cantona. Cantona, had the ego of a fish trawler but was still able to galvanize the team. Zidane, I had only seen glimpses of but knew he was special

.........................................Pfaff*..........................................
Cafu..................McGrath.................Baresi..................Maldini
.......................................Desailly..................................
.....................Mattheus...................Platini....................
...........Ronaldinho..........Van Basten.............Messi

If I had to pick one it would have to be Messi........best player I've ever seen.

My best ever (non-Liverpool) 11 would have C. Ronaldo, Maradona and P.Schmeichel in it and maybe Zidane ahead of Platini but this is my best 11 based not only on talent but also players I enjoyed watching most.

*Pfaff (Belgium goalie in '86 world cup) gets in for 3 reasons; he was a very good keeper, he has a very funny name.........and most importantly.....his penalty saves against Mexico in that world cup penalty shoot out won me my first every very big betting win.

You didn't enjoy watching Mara-freakin-dona play?

Fuck it, here's my favourite non-LFC team.

Van der Sar

Zanetti
Desailly
Baresi
Maldini

Redondo
Maradona
Rijkaard

Raul
Batistuta
Totti

I was obviously envious that United had loads of good players, but because I always wanted them to be shit and to lose then I could never call a United player a favourite.

Butragueño/Garrincha/Litmanen

Emilio Butragueño "The Vulture Of Real Madrid"

Garrincha

Litmanen

On the top of my head now

Peter Scheimechel (dislike him but at one time I really thought nobody could get past him)
Paulo Maldini
Cannavaro
Desailly
Cafu

Makelele/Kante
Zidane
Gullit/Rijkaard
Matthaus

Van Basten
Romario

Cheat code striker : Ronaldo R9

Oh, I also used to like Mattias Sammer when I was a kid. He popularised the libero position which I haven’t seen much in the modern game anymore, like how Matthaus made the sweeper position his own back in the day.
