A very interesting Topic Anita, linking Islam with football, and the delicate work/life/health/belief balance that needs to be observed, by practicing Muslims in these circumstances. Thank you for raising it.
You look after yourself at this time too, and keep well hydrated when the day allows

Vlad, are you related to Tony Blair? He couldn't have put that better.... You just need to do a few headers with fasting Muslims now.
I wonder if I could do that, could Anita be one ? Would I be better with a beard in those circumstances Anita?

regards

tis certainly an interesting topic. Takes much dedication and will power to undertake this. muchos respect to you anita and any others on here that are in the middle of ramadan!!

I'd struggle with that, big time.
I struggle with fasting between lunch and dinner!

Wasn't there some big uproar in Italy about this. Did Mourinho say/do something re: muntari that caused issues with the Muslim community?

there are usually exemptions when traveling and such. so on away games they can actually have food and water if they so chose

Weird, it was on my mind to post a thread similar to this today when I woke up just to discuss how the players must get on during Ramadan. Very interesting reads though, thanks Anita.

Personally I think it's daft.

Faith is integral in some peoples lives, its different cultures, different mindsets.

Calling someone's belief system daft is, well daft. Clearly it isn't particularly practical for a professional sports star, but it isn't something silly, done on a whim, or done for self gratification. Some things are beyond sport, and personally, I'm glad of that.

By all accounts, it might do you some good to try it.

What purpose does it serve ?

Similar to me not supposed to be eating meat on a Friday. Both are daft traditions from an outdated belief system.

I think that compromising your beliefs for sport, however daft or outdated they seem to some people, would be a very sad thing. It's like Eric Liddell (of Chariots of Fire fame) refusing to run in the Olympic final of the 100m because of his daft and outdated beliefs. He would have betrayed himself if he had. And surely he's all the more admirable as a person for it. So it is in this case.

I think putting yourself in a position where you're more likely to let down your team, club and fans for some make believe shit is a sad thing.

Yeah I agree Doc.

I seem to remember the great Michael Jones missing out on a WC semi, due to it being played on a Sunday. You've got to respect a man who's willing to stick by their beliefs no matter how tempting it might be to do otherwise.

If he'd been Welsh though and he had refused to play, i might have had a slightly different opinion of it.

It's not silly because it compromises his ability to play football, its silly because it's an entirely unnecessary belief system.

That said, we should definitely respect how diligent he is in pursuing something irrational, because that's what human beings should be aspiring to.

Flipping this over, I bet religion helped ingrain some of the discipline required in youth to make it to the very top of football.

Absolutely. I'm sure that no-ones complaining if these guys don't drink as a side affect of their daft beliefs.

Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are faeries at the bottom of it too?

Haha!

Mourinho quote :

"Muntari had some problems related to Ramadan, perhaps with this heat it's not good for him to be doing this fasting"

Mohamed Nour Dachan, president of the Union Of The Islamic Community in Italy, has castigated him for his remarks.

And now he's getting death threats from adherents of a religion of peace.

All religious people are irrational nutters.

Ha.. You can always rely on Mourinho to say what he thinks.

"Respect our beliefs or we'll cut your head off with a rusty spoon".

Mourinho as manager of the player has every right to say that.

Those who threaten him with death are complete morons.

as for the 'all religious people bla bla' appreciate it.

The most famous example of this in the States is when Sandy Koufax, one of the best pitchers in baseball history and a Jew, refused to pitch the first game of the World Series because it was Yom KIppur, a 25 hour fast Jews undertake once a year.

I think it's a testament to any athlete's character that he puts his faith/personal beliefs ahead of the sport he loves and plays.

... and I do think you're being slightly harsh with your language Ross ole chap.
