In 2002 Barcelona finished in 6th with a squad that included Valdes, Puyol, Marquez, Garcia, Xavi, Cocu, Iniesta, Van Bronckhorst, Motta, Enrique, Quaresma, Saviola, Kluivert, Overmars and Gabri.
They underperformed all year failing to win 23 times and ending on 56 points.
The following season they started poorly despite adding Ronaldinho, in the opening months of the season they occupied the bottom 3 places in La Liga. Van Gaal left and was replaced by (Young, Dynamic and Sexy) Frank Rijkaard.
Rikjaard immediately trusted the young players Iniesta and Xavi moved some of the dead wood out of the team and trusted the players coming through the academy to support his attacking side built around their ONE genuine world class attacking player (Ronaldinho) they finished the league in second and had built the foundation for The most succesful period in the clubs history. Built on-
a)Attacking football.
b)Youth talent and academy players
c)Young sexy manager.

They came out of the worst period they had had in 50 years and built a legacy to last for years.
The catalyst for this radical change in club direction was
a)The awful period they had endured
b)The change at corporate level at the club (laporta coming in)
c)The change from tactic bogged coaches to a young fresh (sexy) ideal.

Hope it helps.

So we should bring Rijkaard in for Hodgson? I am in on that one.
Didn't think I would ever say this, but if it was on the table right now then I wouldn't say no.

Interesting Andy.

The only point I'd challenge is Riijkard's faith in Xavi ... I don't think he trusted him that much. There's no way you keep him on the bench in the UCL final if you do!

I've just browsed through the 'New Manager' thread back from June before we knew who'd be appointed.

It appears that Brendan and Oncy also thought it would be an interesting idea to bring in someone like Michael Laudrup with Carra as his side-kick That's probably a first that us three are agreeing on the same subject which gotta count for something.

How Hicks and Gillett could simply overlook this apparent 'co-incidence' is well beyond me?

PS In Brendans defense he's already using the C word with regards to Hodgson back then. At least he's not beeing fickle about him.
I certainly did want a young sexy manager yes. Linky?

There you go mate. Knock yourself out.

*pats Oncys head*
I remember that thread, I hardly think the number of posters who wanted to take a risk with a young, hungry manager was limited to 3.

Though you were probably the only one obviously plumping for Laudrup ;D

if memory serves me right the key part to that season for barca was the signing of Davids, he was instrumental in changing Barca's season then. a fanstastic player at his peak, possibly the best all round midfielder of his generation.

those words make me wonder if you are remembering the davids in his pomp or the one who plays for palace now - he easily would hold his own.

Scott Summers was indeed a fine player, but I'd be happier with either of them too.

Especially the Manc.

Is that an optimistic, positively surprised 'hmmmmmmmmm' or a heavy, uncertain 'hmmmmmmmmmmmm'?

It sound like your are not totally convinced that he is going to be shit and are afraid to declare that he will be, unless you are proved wrong. 😉

Brendan is Sitting on the fence on this one. It is too risky to plough in early with a doom and gloom stance.
