In 2002 Barcelona finished in 6th with a squad that included Valdes, Puyol, Marquez, Garcia, Xavi, Cocu, Iniesta, Van Bronckhorst, Motta, Enrique, Quaresma, Saviola, Kluivert, Overmars and Gabri.
They underperformed all year failing to win 23 times and ending on 56 points.
The following season they started poorly despite adding Ronaldinho, in the opening months of the season they occupied the bottom 3 places in La Liga. Van Gaal left and was replaced by (Young, Dynamic and Sexy) Frank Rijkaard.
Rikjaard immediately trusted the young players Iniesta and Xavi moved some of the dead wood out of the team and trusted the players coming through the academy to support his attacking side built around their ONE genuine world class attacking player (Ronaldinho) they finished the league in second and had built the foundation for The most succesful period in the clubs history. Built on-
a)Attacking football.
b)Youth talent and academy players
c)Young sexy manager.

They came out of the worst period they had had in 50 years and built a legacy to last for years.
The catalyst for this radical change in club direction was
a)The awful period they had endured
b)The change at corporate level at the club (laporta coming in)
c)The change from tactic bogged coaches to a young fresh (sexy) ideal.

Hope it helps.

Interesting post Oncy.

We were quite a few on here hoping for a young talented manager beeing brought in with new 'sexy' ideas and an attacking-minded approach if I remember correctly.

I was advertising for one Michael Laudrup and that was perhaps a bit premature given he had been out of a job for a year or so and never really been tried at highest level (as a manager that is). But I was merely wanting us to get those benefits and positive ribbles throughout the club as you've illustrated helped Barca back on track a few years backs and many a team before them too by appointing a young, positive-minded talented manager.

Roy was my second choice if we had to go British after my first choice Kenny but I was really hoping for someone like Deschamps, Laudrup even Klinsmann or perhaps Benficas manager Jorge Jesus albeit he's a tad bit older was beeing brought in instead.

Come January and if we're still not seeing any real signs of improvements we'll hopefully go down this road but I'm still convinced we've got to get our ownership-issues solved as well - today rather than tomorrow - are we going to improve in the preferred scale.

Laudrup over Hodgson any given day. However he is ill these days isnt he?

The la liga especially in 2002 was infinitely weaker than the prem.
That isnt the point. They built a side that won 2 European cups and 4 League titles

What?

The league basically faciliated their rise.

itd take longer and be far harder in 2010

You are thinking of his little brother Brian Laudrup mate.

Michael is busy stealing points from Barca and Real in La Liga with relegation tipped Mallorca. He's beeing treated like a Saint in Spain and the players always seem to love him to bits. He'd be a bold bet but one I'd be pleased to see the club make. One thing is for certain we'd be able to attract top players with a icon like Laudrup in the manager seat.

I've said it before and I'll gladly say it again (you better be listening this time around Hicks and Gillett):

Manager: Michael Laudrup
Assistant manager: Jamie Carragher
King: Kenny

You could argue that United hasn't looked weaker in soon to be 20 years.

Chelseas key-players are all above 30-years-old and Arsene Wenger still doesn't really know how to assemble a title-winning squad.

City is on the up but they are still not anywhere near as good as say the United of old.

That is his brother, Brian.

Laudrup is an impressive albeit inexperienced manager. Mallorca is now 9th in the La Liga and have played and drawn with both Real and Barcelona.

I've just browsed through the 'New Manager' thread back from June before we knew who'd be appointed.

It appears that Brendan and Oncy also thought it would be an interesting idea to bring in someone like Michael Laudrup with Carra as his side-kick That's probably a first the three of us are agreeing upon the same subject which gotta count for something?

How Hicks and Gillett could simply overlook this apparent 'co-incidence' is well beyond me!

PS In Brendans defense he's already using the C word with regards to Hodgson back then. At least he's not beeing fickle about him.

I've always wanted Rijkaard.

What he done at Barca was phenomenal.
To be honest I wouldn't have minded him either.

There you go mate. Knock yourself out.

I'm not sure that there are many managers I wouldn't want instead of Hodgson at the moment.

Obviously not Benitez, and Fat Sam is and always will be beyond the pale but there are many others who would have been in the 'no way' category a few months back that I would welcome with open arms right now

We'd somehow be in the Conference League already had he been appointed I'm sure.

I know no one else would, but I would be thrilled if Rijkaard came here. I'd love to see us playing his brand of football.

And he's super cool.

He probably would have done better than Woy has actually but there are limits!

Rijkaard would've been a bad appointment on his own.

The success of Barca came from the collective of Laporta, Txiki Begiristain, Ten Cate and Rijkaard.

Whenever anyone says Rijkaard I just see Rudi Voellers electric scouse hair all full of gob.

Anyone think Rafa's demise came with Paco getting the hump and fucking off?

Clough wasn't ever as good once Peter Taylor fell out with him either

"If Roy cunting Hodgson can be seriously considered, then quite frankly, anything is possible."

Yes, I was certainly going to give Budgie every chance wasn't I?

Agreed. Also he had one of the all time greatest youth talents coming through the ranks. Hats of him for trusting them and giving them the chance though.

Get on the phone to Paco and give the job to him?

I agree, there has been a significant coincidence.
