Liverpool plan to reward 'untouchable' Fabinho with new contract

Liverpool hope to start negotiations with Fabinho over a new contract soon, the champions considering the Brazil international to be one of the “untouchables” at the club after an impressive first two and a half years there.
Fabinho joined Liverpool from Monaco in 2018 and after a quiet start in England he has grown to become a key member of the squad that won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League last season.

The 27-year-old has played mainly in central defence this term because of injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. His deal runs until 2023 but Liverpool hope to extend that to 2025 or 2026 with a hefty pay rise. Fabinho earns £100,000 a week but is in line for an increase that would see him move towards the selection of players just underneath the top earners.
Liverpool also hope to tie Georginio Wijnaldum to a new contract. The 30-year-old’s deal runs out in the summer and he has been linked with Barcelona. Liverpool hope to restart talks with the Dutch midfielder, who has been at the club since 2016, in the next few weeks. Wijnaldum is still not convinced about what his role will be at the club.
Jürgen Klopp’s side beat Wolves 4-0 on Sunday to move to second in the Premier League, level on points with Tottenham but with inferior goal difference.

He’s been everything I thought Keita would be in terms of being a regular starter and dominating his position. Worth every penny,

Seeing how good he is at CB just underlines for me how good of a player he is overall. A real asset to have.
I think there's a misconception here regarding Fabs position. He's actually a defender, that learned to play as a DM.
So it's not exactly a surprise that he's performing well at CB.

He's great. He still hasn't quite reached the superb form of about a year or so ago, and that has more than a bit to do with having to cover other players' positions, but he's got a rare talent. Great to see these moves - they remind you of how passive and amateurish we used to be in the Rick Parry era.

A move that came out of nowhere ... a player the mancs wanted, and we swooped in, got him at a bargain price and the team went up another level with him.
Fantastic player.

Isn’t a new contract usually a sign he’s about to turn to shit or his leg’s about to fall off?

He's phenomenal , his ability to play a perfect long ball for Salah and co is a great asset , although vvd could ping balls forward like that too
I think he complements Matip well , Gomez wasn't all that prior to his injury and fabs has been flawless

Once he's done, he should be remembered as one of the PL greats. Up there with the likes of Vieira, Essien etc. Absolute beast.

Essien sure, but he has some ways to go to reach the Viera/Roy Keane levels - not so much in terms of performance, but leadership and trophies. The way he stepped up in Van Dijk’s absence has been a good step in that direction.

Was he ever a centre back though? I thought he played right back but then found his best position at dm.

What a player, especially this season where he has stepped in to the CB role and has played such a big part.

Can't wait to have him back at DM, though. One of the best in the world.
