Have to say well done to all the Central European nations at this Euro. Austria got out of the group for the first time and pushed Italy all the way. Czech Republic eliminated Holland yesterday with a fearless display. And now Switzerland claimed the biggest scalp of all – eliminated the world champions and showed so much heart coming back from 2 goals down.

All of these 3 nations share the similarity that most of their key players play in the Bundesliga or in their national leagues, which are kind of part of Bundesliga's ecosystem and have a lot of players, coaches and ideas circulating back and forth. This coincides with the period of unprecedented success for German managers in European football; you could say that if Italian football tactics dominated in the 90's and early 2000's and Spanish style from the late 2000's until a few years ago, now is the era of the Germans and their idea of football.

So you would think the German proper national team would be at their peak of dominance now, but instead they have a really weird unbalanced side caught in transition between generations and coached by a manager who probably overstayed his welcome. I think we all know what to expect from England and Southgate tomorrow; the interesting thing will be whether Germany can figure out something that works in time for that game. Almost everyone in Germany thinks they have to play with a back 4 and move Kimmich to midfield (I think Klopp said so too in a recent interview); but I can understand why Löw wants to pack that creaky defense, not that it helped them much. Maybe their players should intervene, like the French players led by Zidane did in 2006, and give their increasingly unsure manager some balls.

With a bit of a stretch I could also add Hungary to this list – their 4 best players are also from the Bundesliga, but to be fair they are coached by an Italian.

If I were Löw, I would go out all guns blazing like this:

-------------------Neuer---------------------
-----------Hummels-----Rudiger---------
Ginter----------Kimmich---------Gosens
------------Kroos------Goretzka----------
Gnabry---------Havertz---------Musiala

Win the midfield battle and trust Neuer to deal with any defensive fuck-ups.

Southgate – I don't know where to even start. For sure Hendo should automatically play in place of Phillips if fit; how the fuck is the guy in his first EPL season is now seen as the "safe" option over a CL-winning captain? But there are many baffling selections and undeserved favorites throughout that team.

Here is a nice tidbit courtesy of Barney Roonay:
The England men’s football team have only once in their history beaten in a knockout tournament game a nation that had previously won the World Cup. Once! That victory was the 1966 World Cup final.
It would be truly historic if they somehow manage to buck that trend.

If I were Löw, I'd wash my hands.

I think Hendo is nailed on to play 60 mins from the start, his minutes have gone up each game.

If England try to take the game to German (but in a controlled way) i think they have a chance, if they sit back and try to absorb pressure they will more than likely crumble.

It does look like someone crap is gonna win this tournament so you can't write England off.

Except the crap teams run a bit more to make up for it, meanwhile the england team will run their mouths a bit more, but never their legs.
