Hodgson to give duo a chance
England boss to make own judgement on Gerrard and Lampard
Roy Hodgson is ready to give Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard another chance to prove that the midfield duo can work effectively together for England.
Successive England managers have spent the best part of a decade trying to concoct a system to fit Gerrard and Lampard into the same team, and ensure it is a success.
Hodgson is the latest coach charged with that task and he has selected Liverpool captain Gerrard and Chelsea veteran Lampard in his 23-man squad for Euro 2012.
He has acknowledged that the duo have failed to sparkle alongside each other in the past, but he will wait to make his own judgement before writing off the combination.
Happy
"It's a very good question but I have to be careful what I say," said Hodgson. "I know it hasn't worked well in the past and that is why I don't want to say 'it is nonsense, of course it can work'.
"I would be flying in the face of quite a lot of evidence you can put before me to prove it is not true. Sometimes players don't gel for certain reasons.
"But I need to work with them to find that out for myself. I can't guarantee I won't be saying the same as other people once I've done that, but I am happy to give them a chance because I have seen them both do very good central midfield jobs for their club sides.
"So I can't really see any reason why they can't play together. I would have to plead that up to now I haven't worked with them both together or with Frank at all."
Gerrard has been named England captain by Hodgson and the recently-appointed coach is confident there is a desire within the whole squad to savour success on the international stage.
He added: "That is probably because a lot of recent England performances have not hit the heights as far as the media and general public are concerned.
"I know Steven is burning to bring the qualities he has got to England. He has made that perfectly clear to me.
"I have been buoyed by some of the conversations I have had. You never know when you speak to players who have not always had the best of times and taken a lot of criticism for their performances.
"I wasn't certain I was going to get that enthusiasm - 'pick me, I want to play, give me that shirt, please don't take it from me'."

Seriously?
Last time they tried this recipe it blew up in their face.
And the time before that, and the time before that....
I love the never say die attitude.
