It's an Irish thing, you put "so" on the end of some sentences as a weird little bit of verbal punctuation, I don't think it actually means anything.

A bit like us adding "right". Possibly.

or Ay if you're canadian.

Your man in Father Ted (the grey-haired fella who tragically died) used to say "Ah, right so" an awful lot, and it was just his way of expressing agreement or understanding.

I look at it like this basically :

So = if that's the case.

So = if that's the case.

That's giving it more meaning than I ever thought it had, so.

Works though.

EDIT: but what about when Paddies do it in this context: as in, about to get cracking on something, or depart, or whatever.

Y' know, hands rubbed together and an exclamation of "Right, so!"

I'll have to get the Paddie Lexicon out, I'll get back to you on that one.

I've always though of "so" as the Irish equivalent of "then"

Seems to make sense most of the time!

It usally means then or ok when put at the end of a sentence.

To be technical, it's actually "Eh?" but close enough. And I'll have to admit to being guilty of it on occasion. Though most of the other Canadianisms we're renowned for (esp. by Americans) are nonsense.

What other Canadianisms are there ?

Most of the ones I met all did the "Eh" thing. It was headwrecking, every sentence was a question.

My mate moved back from Melbourne doing that 'eh' thing after ever sentence too. He got ripped to pieces for it, it was incredibly annoying.
