Drenthe-to-Anfield rumours gather pace

His kungfu kick was not that pro though but for me he was always a nutter. Anyways... I am looking for an Eric Cantonna type to give us a leg up.

The kick was admittedly a big exception, but even at ManUre his record was massively better than it had been back home in France. The real point though is that at Leeds he'd proved he was capable of controlling himself consistently and channelling his efforts into top class play. Drenthe, to say the least, hasn't.

I'm not convinced that if you fill your squad with fine, upstanding family men who obey every order - I am thinking about Dirk here - you are ever going to win anything.
I think you are taking a huge liberty in suggesting that upstanding family men can't be winners.
Rafa started the process of trying to move Xabi on when he insisted on attending the birth of his child, and I would happily have him back..
Discipline off the pitch usually suggests discipline on it as well.
There are exceptions to both to prove the rule off course but I think it holds true for the majority of players.

I have to agree with JJ on this. He's nothing like the untapped talent of say a Cantona. No thanks

Wasn't he the guy that Gerrard lamped right in front of the ref in a pre season a few years ago? If I remember right a lot of people were saying he's the kind of player you want on your team and not playing against.

I remember it being the other way around (drenthe ripping into our players) and the liverpool players being up in arms as it was only a friendly. a lot of aggression shown in drenthe even then.

That's exactly right. He was lunging into players two footed. I seem to recall a few elbows in faces as well - He was basically being a right wanker. That was until Gerrard stepped up and outright smacked him one right in front of the ref. He didn't even get a card if I remember right. The pre season Liverpool TV commentary said that the ref thought Drenth deserved it so let it slide 😀

Ok agreed, I did not watch him enough to even suggest he can be a Cantona. Suarez could be but we need a few more.

Three two rumours doing the rounds after the semi were that he'd not turned up for the coach, or that Moyes had asked about rumours he was looking to move to us & he said he was.

The perfume of both rumours being Moyes said he wouldn't play for Everton again.

Was it not 2-1?

Can't see it myself, he's a bit of a liability on and off the pitch, can come up with something great and equally give the ball away when under no pressure to let the opponents in on goal. Plus he's a fuck head. No ta.

This is on the back of the semi final at the weekend aswell don't forget, it's probably super-lazy journalism.

No thanks. He looked good in the Euros before we signed Babel, but he doesn't really look to have progressed much since then, and has only got madder.

If his talent outweighed his lunacy then fair enough. But it doesn't, so no.

Indeed - "buy troubled players and solve their problems". But surely not when so many others have tried and failed.
As one of the two people on the site to have actually read money ball I feel obliged to point out the above isn't ever mentioned in the book.

If it's from a book it's the Damned United.

Noted. Did they not do this to some extent with the Red Sox though?

But....but.....moneyball!

If we're getting him for peanuts, I'd be happy enough with this. He brings something we have in relatively short supply at the minute, pace, and there definitely is a player of quality in there somewhere. Nevertheless, I'd prefer to see Sterling given more of an opportunity next season, and buying Drenthe might stall his introduction.

So what are the boil'em down central 'moneyball' principles then. In no more than 100 words.

people get the rules of soccernomics and moneyball mixed up
the 10 simple rules of Soccernomics:

1.New managers waste money, ergo, limit their say in transfers.
2.Draw opinion from several people from different backgrounds.
3.Avoid stars of recent international tournaments.
4.Avoid certain nationalities (e.g. Brazilian, Dutch) as they are overpriced.
5.Buy players in their early twenties; older players are overvalued and youngsters aren’t fully developed.
6.Sell a player either before buyers see deterioration in his game or when a club offers more than he’s worth.
7.Replace your best players before selling.
8.Never buy strikers because they are overpriced; develop them instead.
9.Buy players with personal problems , then help them deal with their issues.
10.Help new players relocate.

They may have taken some problem players, but most of the players they took on (like Ortiz for example) were players who just weren't performing to the level their talent dictated they should be performing to.

No thanx. Drenthe had great potential but ego and indiscipline ruined him.

Forget freebies, let's get world class players if we want better results. That's the only way we can progress.

I don't think we should forget about them, we should just try and make sure we get them right. CB seems to have been a very good pick up.

We have enough squad players, time to get starters in. I wouldn't mind getting a freebie like Junior Hoillet.
