Drenthe-to-Anfield rumours gather pace

Rumours that Royston Drenthe has signed a pre-contact agreement with Liverpool are gathering pace, particularly on Twitter.
With the Dutchman seemingly on his way out of Goodison following one transgression too many in David Moyes's eyes, speculation in the press at the weekend suggested that Liverpool were interested in stepping in to snap him up.
Now, with his marriage seemingly over, there are suggestions that the controversial winger is looking to stay in England. Drenthe has apparently bought property in Hale which would, of course, make staying at Everton or making a switch to Anfield very handy.

Crap source, but should we be interested?

4 years ago, perhaps.

There is talent there and he's got 4 goals and 8 assists in 14 starts and 13 sub appearances, which is alright. But he's reached that Babel stage in his career when you're talking less about potential and more about the player you see in front of you. He's trouble and unless we're having a clear out and want to build up squad depth, I don't see the point.

Fantastic if true. I was worried our existing 46 nothing-better-than-squad-players weren't going to be enough so it's great to add one extra.

You can never have too many overpaid shitcunts in your team. Especially if we want to maintain that 8th spot year upon year.

Wasn't he the guy that Gerrard lamped right in front of the ref in a pre season a few years ago? If I remember right a lot of people were saying he's the kind of player you want on your team and not playing against.

Yeah. He was a proper cunt and if I remember rightly the game developed a bit of a nasty undertone for a friendly, particularly given that it was Kuyt's homecoming.

Personally I'd take the chance with Drenthe. The guy has a left foot like a steam hammer. Our squad has needed more quality strikers for a long time.

"One transgression too many" ? Anyone care to elaborate. I havnt heard anything

Was constantly turning up late for training. Allegedly likes the sauce and there were even rumours he'd spent a night in a cell recently. This is Liverpool, city of rumours, though

Nothing spectacular - he's been persistently arriving late for training. AFAIK he did it again and Moyes just decided he'd had enough.

Three two rumours doing the rounds after the semi were that he'd not turned up for the coach, or that Moyes had asked about rumours he was looking to move to us & he said he was.

The perfume of both rumours being Moyes said he wouldn't play for Everton again.

Perfume of rumours?

Is that a Scouse thing?

I liked Drenthe before I realised he was a nutjob. He's got talent but I doubt he'll ever do anything with it.

Seriously, old pal? Leaving aside the fact that he's a wide left player, surely it's apparent that whoever buys Drenthe buys trouble. Swings, roundabouts and all that.

Although to play devils advocate....

A lot of people said Ben Arfa was trouble and he settled down pretty well at Newcastle.

Counter-argument is that he was younger and less mental.

I actually wonder whether collecting that early injury kind of forced Ben Arfa to knuckle down and settle to his task.

Fair point though. I certainly wouldn't say no to taking a punt on him now.

I'm not convinced that if you fill your squad with fine, upstanding family men who obey every order - I am thinking about Dirk here - you are ever going to win anything.

Everton friend of mine told me that the rumours on the Blueshite forums are that Drenthe was kicked out by his Missus on Thursday night and he drove to the training ground where the coach was to pick the players up on Friday morning. Apparently when Moyes heard he was sleeping in his car he sent him home*. I smell a red herring, I reckon there's more to this story than anyone's being told.

*Edit: Given that his wife had kicked him out "home" probably just means send him packing.

That's true, but you may not help your cause by importing ticking time bombs into the dressing-room either. It's really a question of degree IMO. You have to judge whether the risk is worth taking. My view is that Drenthe hasn't come even close to suggesting it would be.

Not in this country, Mike. He had been in France, but he was a model pro at Leeds before Ferguson took him to Old Toilet.

His kungfu kick was not that pro though but for me he was always a nutter. Anyways... I am looking for an Eric Cantonna type to give us a leg up.

Indeed - "buy troubled players and solve their problems". But surely not when so many others have tried and failed.

He is a really talented player if we could get him to straighten out. He is properly pacy, and has a good attitude on the pitch (if not off it.)
