Sorry to go off topic, but why wasn't there big interest in Suarez? Concerns over his attitude/conduct?
Well it defos show that slightly more than the Downing fee can get you top performers!
Or, seeing as Kenny scouted him from the start to the last, that the man knows good football players. So therefore we should trust his opinion about Downing, & not a bunch of people on the internet who don't think he's good enough.
I am not worried about Kenny getting a decent season out of Downing. But I still disagree that buying Downing is the way to go to reach our hairy goals about winning everything!
Our "hairy" goals?
i spent all my teenage life tryna reach that hairy goal

Say all you like and dress it up however you like, but buying Stewart Downing for those types of figures is fucking ridiculous.

In 12 months time we'll all be hoping we buy someone better. Guaranteed.
Will you write a humble pie eating sort of thread after next season when you've been proved wrong?

One more depressing season coming right up.
Yup. Even more depressive by the fact that we had the funds this time.
Are you two taking the piss?
You sound surprised Sheiky, we're used to this bollocks by now. I think some divs forget that the team we presently have gave most of the Premiership a run for it's money for 5 months under Kenny.

The rumoured price is 16 mill. Ican live with that.
Definitely, as I said in the Adam thread, he plays for the team and doesn't go missing, works his bollocks off and doesn't think he's already made it. He'll give us balance, goals, assists and he fits in perfectly with what we're trying to achieve as a team - he'll wear the shirt with pride.

We do need a quick attacker so I hope that's sorted, but people are letting that cloud their opinion I think. It should be a separate issue because he's a good player.

Tbh I think Downing has much more pace than people give him credit for, hopefully Mata will follow aswell though.

He's a step up from what we've got and has the ability to be even more than that with better players around him, I appreciate the old 'hardworker vs skill' thing, but he's got both IMO. He might not be the fashionable choice but the end product will be positive.

i've got a horrible feeling that we'll get downing, he'll have a good season and next summer threads will be started over how we should get rid
like lucas all over again. Some people don't like giving credit where its due and focus on the past too much

Indeed JJ< but it'll be all the more galling if he plays well wearing red and still gets it

You shouldn't make the decision to keep a player simply because they've had a decent season or two.

If there's an opportunity to improve by getting rid of them it shouldn't be off the table.

well noone disagree on that. so the natural step is to improve on that. is downing the answer? Adam in for ming? Meh.

the rumours are that ming will go if a substantial offer comes in, which is fair enough, but i dont think we're actively trying to sell him, mind you it does have a bit of deja-vu to the whole alonso situation

quite, but the way people go on about lucas is like he's the sole reason we're shite. I think people will lump downing in with that. I'd advocate selling if we got decent money and we had a solid improved replacement lined up.

We managed to being in Luis Suarez for £22M.

We can clearly do better than Stuart Downing for £19M, and this is coming from someone who rates him more than most on here.

Mata is worth the extra spend.

For what it's worth, i really hope we do get Downing and i don't think £20m is THAT far over the top for him in today's market.

Too much negativity around here guys! If we sign Downing, let's give him a chance and see what he can do.

Let's not start discussing selling him before we have even signed him. ;D

To be honest Downing has pretty much always impressed whenever I've seen him over the years. He's not top bracket ala Stevie or Suarez but he is consistantly good which is rare in a winger.

I don't get all the negativity, yeah I'm not jumping up and down about it, but he improves our team and squad, so whats not to like?

if he was called Downinho and had an impressive youtube clip, Im sure a few on here would be wetting themselves at the prospect.

Fine. But there are Agueros and Matas on the move out there, which would be far more exciting signings.

This isnt directly reflected against your post, Bob; but this stereotype is getting very common and very very annoying.

There is this belief that any dissatisfaction with a potential English target is tinged with prejudice.

This is the same bullshit we saw with with Crouch as well.

I dont think anyone is disuting that Downing is a good player, but I do think 20 million should be able to get you players better than Stweart Downing. We then hear posts like 'oh that's the way the market is'.

Yes, but the market is like that because certain clubs think nothing about splashing loads of cash on average or unproven players, and we are becoming a very good example of such a club.

The other refrain is that we're living in the past because top players wont come to a mediocre club which isnt in the Champions League next year. It's a good thing Sergio Aguero doesnt seem to agree with that view when Juventus called, because CL or not, Juventus is still an infinitely larger club than Atletico Madrid.

The polar opposite of living in the past is acceptance of present mediocrity.

The blunt truth is this; when the headlines say that Liverpool has spent 85 odd million on players; very few would have thought we were talking about Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing.

Who knows mate maybe they'll produce the goods for us, but i'd agree it does seem an awful lot of money to spend on players with such little wow factor.

I'll also add that i think all of the names you mention will improve us, just not sure if we shouldn't be even better off with that amount of cash being laid out.

That's exactly the issue; if we'd bought those 4 players say 5 years ago they'd have probably cost half of what we're looking at now; and we'd be seeing posts about having to shop in Tesco bla bla and not being able to pay for top players.

Well, we're paying top money now, and I hope these are now top players.

Yes, I'd say all of those players would improve us, but at the prices we're being quoted I'd have hoped for a lot more than some improvement.

It's almost as if we've convinced ourselves these players will be great for us precisely because they cost so much.

Sure, plenty on here couldnt give a fuck bout how much we spend because they'd rather see 85 million on the pitch and not in the bank. Well, 85 million could with some careful nursing and quality scouting get us some phenomenal improvements. It's also nearly 1/3 the cost of a new stadium.

The money we spend or dont spend is always important.
