Downing

Stewart Downing is set to hand in a transfer request as he attempts to force through his move to Liverpool.

The England winger is closing in on the switch to Anfield as he bids to follow Ashley Young out of Aston Villa.

He has been the subject of summer interest from Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish, but Villa's £19million asking price has put a block on negotiations.

Liverpool are refusing point blank to do business at that price, and have already looked at alternatives in the form of Wigan's Charles N'Zogbia and Dimitri Payet of St Etienne.

Downing, 26, realises the onus is now on him to revive the potential transfer, by making clear his desire to leave.

It is not a new tactic for the player, who submitted a formal transfer request when a player at Middlesbrough, and eventually provoked his £12million move to Villa Park.

Now he is faced with the same situation, after refusing to accept the offer of a new contract which has been put on the table by the Midlands club.

I think its worth repeating. 70 MILLION POUNDS STERLING FOR ANDY CARROLL, JORDAN HENDERSON AND STEWART DOWNING.

I'm not sure what is more insane; modern football or whoever is sanctioning these transfers.

Let's just give it some time. I mean if we can see the frailties in our squad I bet our management do as well. I hope...

Partly. I mean that when we finally have the possibility to consolidate and make a good shout for the top again, a 70 mill outlay for adam, downing and Carroll just doesnt make sence. downing is not a winger to win you CL within 3 years i.e. so why Bother? Maxi showed by the end of last season he can do the same job until further, so if it is not a huge improvement on what we have, how is it valueable?

You're all pissing me off now.

I'm gonna just shut the forum & put a sign up:

Due to Liverpool Football Club forfeiting their season, going into administration & selling Anfield to Everton Football Club for £1.50, all due to buying Stewart Downing this summer, we have decided to not bother discussing football any longer, cos it's all shit.

Its not all doom and gloom, and it is better to have Downing at the bench than Nabil El Zahr. Ill give you that.

But I am not only supporting the red shirts. I care about the guys, well at least most of them. I want to support them because they offer something back. I would not support Nani if he came over here and behaved like the cock he is. He is, no matter if he has good crosses, a totally uninteresting guy. Downing.. Well, I have no big issues with him, but he is not exciting me at all. A bit like Gareth Barry did not excite me at all. Adam? I prefer Ming. We have bought henderson, and we might even have Aquaman back. The area is sorted at the moment, and we do not have european footie to offer, hence the number of games next year is limited. If we are to spend cash, let us spend on people with either a huge potential, like Caroll and Suarez signings, or lets buy players that are a lot better than what we got. Adam in for Ming? He aint better, and we send out a player I like, for someone unintersting chap.... I dont like that.

We haven't sold Raul.
Downing is infinitely better than Maxi
The European transfer market hasn't even opened yet.
We don't actually know who we have lined up.
We don't actually know how much we've got to spend.

Stop being hysterical fannys.

You can't blame people. We've wanted a £20m winger for ages, never did we think it would be Downing.

There is no way to dress this up as a good deal. We know he's stupidly overpriced, we know he's no more than an average to good winger. We know 20m can buy a whole lot more elsewhere.

The only thing that keeps me from thinking this won't be a complete disaster of a deal is that players like Downing who've shown they can be decent in the league over the course of the early twenties (but without any real physical talents) usually have a peak of about three years where there performance is notably better than previous. Downing is 27 next month. I'd be willing to bet he's either had his first year or about to have his first year of that peak - so I think he will perform if we do sign him. But paying anything in the 16-20m range can only be justified if we bring home a league title in the next three years. We can get back in the CL without wasting money like this, the premium is only justified with league success.

So he's uninteresting?

Right, sound. Now there's a basis to not buy a player. Thank fuck we didn't get Alan Shearer way back when.

How about you all just sit back for a minute, remember we're a side that fluctuated from near relegation form to rallying & finishing top 7, outside of ALL European places, & just consider for a moment, that we're not the club we once were, so players arent falling over themselves to come here.

We cant offer them what our rivals can, we can offer them tradition, charm, & a shitload of promises. So we're buying players who can improve, are young enough to give us a chance in return for a boatload of cash, or players who are bloody good, if not world class, & don't offer a risk in terms of star signings who may or may not settle.

The team we are building clearly is about British steel, determination, hard work, & a TINY bit of class, of course should we get into the CL & challenge as we all hope, come next summer, or poss even January if we really over-perform, we'll get some more top class talent.

Until then, I suggest you all remember where we are, & also, where we were. Some of our best ever players were consistent, solid, reliable performers who didn't set anyone's thoughts alight when mentioned.

As well as that, have a little faith in Kenny to build a side that can challenge for this league, after all, he's the only manager we've EVER had who has proven he can win the Premier League.

My feelings about Downing are clear but this is a good(ish) post, there is no need to get down about it.... also next year, by all accounts, we will have Gerrard back and firing after being absent more or less completely last season. I think we will push for fourth regrdless of shit signings.

I have no problem with these things Jon. But to me i.e. Adam instead of Ming is just the thing that makes no sense at all. Ming is settled in the squad, giving the team flexibility and can probably improve upon his first season. Why should we then spend time and energy on chasing someone who would offer probably less?

Downing is not my cup of tea. Joe Cole is british "steel" as well without setting the light on fire! Pennant, Bellamy etc etc.. If the players aint good enough, dont spend tons of resources try to get them.

The notion of british players bringing steel is probably outdated too. Most of them are complete fannies nowadays.

Kenny would never have bought Joe Cole. I trust the man's judgement enough in regards to buying players with heart & determination. I highly doubt he'll buy any players who are compete fannies.

I am not hysterical. Maybe a fanny, but I am not hysterical at al. A little uninspired about the names we spend time chasing, but not lifting my eyebrows to high even....

We havent sold Raul, but worrying rumours there, and we do have plenty of CMs and chasing another.
Maxi scored enough towards the end, and was very much involved in some fantastic attacking football. Maybe he aint better than Downing, but he surely found his place in the team and balanced it out.

These are good points, Jon; but I thnk you're underselling Liverpool.

We keep acting as if Liverpool are fit only for the likes of Stewart Downing; and that's patently untrue. There are good players out there, and yes, whilst it will be harder to sell Liverpool to them without Champions League football, it is still doable.

The international cachet of Liverpool is still rivalled by probably no more than 5 clubs worldwide, and even that is being conservative.

We need to stop acting as if we HAVE to settle for average players, and we need to believe we can once gaina challenge for the trophies. To do that we need to assemble the best players we can NOW. Not to shrug our shoulders and say 'well the best we can do is Stewart Downing, but lets give it 3 years and see if we can gt in the CL, THEN we can get the players we really want'

What was sold to Luis Suarez that made him want to come in January when things were far FAR worse for us?

What has happened over the past 6 months to now make us feel we need to settle for more average players?

This is not being hysterical; there is clearly a good bit of time left, and I'd rather the club took its time to bring in its best players rarther than to frantically sign them as quickly as possible so they can get pre-season in. Put it this way, I'd rather Mata in August than Downing in June.

Make no mistake, we ARE going to be a very hard sell to the very best players. But we are not Preston North End.

I just want to see the club bring in the best players it can get; it really shouldnt matter whether it's British steel or Jaanese aluminium.
