He's English, 25 yrs old, current England International and has years left on his contract at Villa ....... was never going to come cheap.

It's not my money, I don't really care. Mata and Downing could both play in the same team, and they don't just play the same position, Mata can play many positions. This isn't really the point I was trying to make, I was implying that people wouldn't mind signing Downing if he wasn't our top signing this summer. I wouldn't, although i'd agree I think he's not value for money, as long as there's better players coming in, I couldn't give a fuck.

Because it's not my money it has no effect on me, like someone else said in the thread, I'd prefer to have the player instead of having the money in the bank, only one has a chance of effecting our results.
Now if the question was we'll spend £20million on Downing instead of putting the money towards someone else, it would be a VERY different.
And Downing will improve us, just not as much as the price tag suggests.

It does make sense because the second part is just your interpretation of what he said oncy. Its a given that the money quoted for downing is over what he's worth but after paying 35 million for carroll I dont think some people would mind seeing Downing coming in for 19 provided we also got Mata, I for one wouldnt anyway. They would both improve us in the immediate future. But then again it makes no sense to improve the team...or so you say!
At the end of the day if the club believe that paying that much for Downing is good business i'll accept it and sit back and watch the fireworks from august on regardless!
