Considering this frat boy cost Liverpool 35 million I'm hoping the image doesnt stick for too long

New Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish is resigned to losing Ashely Young to Manchester United.

The Reds have been successful with a bid of around £16m for the England winger, who should complete his move when he returns from a summer break.

“The guys are on holiday at the moment,” said McLeish, who is determined to hold on to Stewart Downing.

“When they are back in England I will try and get a meeting with them. I don’t know but it seems that Ashley is going to leave.

“I don’t know if the Young one is a fait accompli but I’ll certainly be looking to try and keep Stewart.

FUCK OFF WITH YA DOWNING FOR 16M

fuck that fucking shat fuck it AAAAAAAAAAAAGHH

somebody tell me it aint so please.... after years of watching us having to sell our best players finally we get the chance to strengthen the team and we look to throw the best part of 40M on a youngster i'd never even heard of and STEWART FUCKING DOWNING.... god is a manc, he must be... FUCK IT.

i just dont care anymore who we get, im resigned to the fact we're gettin loadsa average players, but i trust kenny to get the best outta them

Molby -We get it mate. Seriously. You don't like Downing. Message received, processed and well and truly understood. Let it go. It will eat you up and consume you from the inside. You'll be sat in your Valencian gaffe rocking back and forth like a deranged Arthur Fowler if you carry on.

Aston Villa have said that a photo showing Stewart Downing posing with a Liverpool scarf is fake, even though it looks pretty real to us.

A photo circulated on Twitter this morning showing Downing and Andy Carroll clutching a Liverpool scarf in a bar either side of an unidentified female, with smiles plastered across both players’ faces.

The half-decent Downing has reportedly been a Liverpool target for some time given the Reds’ patent lack of width in their midfield, and Kenny Dalglish is eager to add to a squad that only got going in the second half of last season.

The picture will only add to speculation linking Downing with the club, although Liverpool officials are also bound to be worried at yet another picture of Andy Carroll at a bar during pre-season, considering he has already been pictured enjoying himself on holiday with Wayne Rooney in Barbados.

Villa have moved to deny the authenticity of the picture, with a spokesman for the club saying: "The picture is a fake. I've spoken to Stewie and he has assured me of that."

McLeish, unveiled at Villa yesterday after his shock switch from Birmingham, insisted he doesn’t want to lose the England ace.

The manager said: “No chance do we want Stewart Downing to go. We certainly don’t want to lose Stewart – he’s a top player.

I need to see what Stewart’s thinking when he comes back because I know that he made some comments when he was away on England duty.

He’s a top player and has a couple of years left on his contract and it’s very important we hold onto Stewart.”

Downing closer to Liverpool move
June 23, 2011

By ESPNsoccernet staff

Stewart Downing is on the verge of joining Liverpool after being told by Aston Villa that he is free to leave the club, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

Downing is understood to be on his way to Anfield if the Reds are able to meet the £19 million asking price for the winger. It is believed that new boss Alex McLeish is reluctant to lose the England international, but with recent contract talks at Villa Park stalling, the club may be prepared to take accept a transfer fee and move instead for Charles N'Zogbia from Wigan.

McLeish earlier told the Birmingham Mail that while he was resigned to losing Ashley Young to Manchester United, he was still interested in keeping Downing.

"He is a top player," said McLeish. "He has got a couple of years left on his contract and it is very important that we hold on to Stewart. I want Stewart to stay. I saw his statement. I'll have a go at talking to Stewart and see what happens.

"The guys are on holiday at the moment. When they are back in England I will try and get a meeting with them. I don't know but it seems that Ashley is going to leave. I don't know if the Young one is a fait accompli but I'll certainly be looking to try and keep Stewart."

Liverpool have also been scouting cheaper alternatives to Downing, including Dimitri Payet from St Etienne, but the Englishman is still the club's preferred target.

Meanwhile, the movement at Villa is set to continue, with Rangers confirming they have made an offer to Carlos Cuellar, while McLeish is expected to announce the signing of Germinal Beerschot's Victor Wanyama, despite the midfielder being heavily linked to Swansea and Celtic.

this.

This could be one of our worst transfers ever, and by god does it have competition

The thought of United getting Young for £16M makes that figure seem even more disturbing.

Downing should not happen.

Nineteen fucking million pounds for Stewart Fucking Downing......

What is going on in the world....

There is no chance it'd get anywhere near the Keane or Aquilani deals.

I refuse to believe this is goin to happen
Me too, mate.

But then again I refused to believe that we're going to sell Xabi.

I wouldn't mind Downing for sub £15million, but £19million is ridiculous. That would be putting Downing nearly on a par with Suarez.

I don't know man, if ashley young goes for 16 million pounds, fetching Downing for 19m is hideously overpaying. He is not better than Ashley Young, let alone worth 19m pounds.

If sombody told you on jan 1st we would spend 70 million on players most would be estatic!

Imagine if that same person told you, the signings were signing Carrol, Henderson and Downing 😱

That isn't comparing like with like though. Young's going for that fee because there's a clause in his contract which means Villa have to let him go if a bid comes in at that level and he wants to leave. Otherwise you can bet he'd not be sold for less than Downing.
