Poll Do you think they'll come good?

Pretty simple, it's half time in the season and I just wanted to see if you still have faith in some of the players who haven't exactly been prominent this season so far.

It's not a secret that I don't rate Downing. I lost all hope in October.

I might be critical about Carroll but I still have faith in him, especially considering his age.

Henderson can become a great player for us IMO, he just needs to step it up and get more involved.

I have faith in Henderson too.
His confidence soared instantly last night when Stevie came on and looked a more assured player.
Carroll and Downing were baffling signings by Kenny and I'd be very surprised if either of them will be here two seasons from now.

Downing is currently at his peak - there is no significant improvement to come - he might have better form, but that's about it.

Carroll will no doubt put in some better performances - but from everything I've seen he lacks the basic ability to go far.

Henderson might make it - I think he's got some potential - whether it's enough time will tell.

Henderson already is good and will become much better, he's already showing signs of improvement. Carroll will get better but not good enough. Drowning won't.

I've become quite pathetic and bitter over this . Such an insane amount to waste on average players who had never proven before that they were good enough.Such a missed opportunity.

the way i look at it is , are they going to be good enough to play a major role in a team challenging for all honours ?.....for all 3 i personally don't think they will be. i hope to god i am wrong .

Ok, I'll bite.

We overpaid on Carroll by at least 15million.

Reason, FSG wanted to show the fans they didn't accept 50m simply to cash in, so sanctioned, nay, encouraged a huge buy.

Downing. IMHO a moneyball fuxk up. Stats tell us he an amazing winger, our eyes tell us he's a decent winger who can cross very well but has never made the step up. He never will, he's simply not good enough. That said, he's better than most of our fans even remotely give him credit for, simply cos they behave like he's the worlds worst winger.

Henderson. I like him. Regardless though, the fee seems absurd. He'd proven very little & most of their fans were bemused by how much we paid.

Putting that to one side though, when he's been played in the centre hes looked composed, mature & shows a very good vision. Does he look worth that fee? No. He looks like at lea half of it though, & he's very young. Personally I think he'll be an extremely good midfielder for us

My votes:

Henderson - No
Downing - Yes
Carroll - No

Henderson hasn't shown the 'wow' factor that can justify the optimism behind his potential, as displayed by the price the club was willing to pay
Carroll's future might be as good as gone, if we get our next striker signing right.
Similarly for Henderson, a good cm signing (e.g. the rumoured Fernando Reges or other DMs like M'Vila) will put more question marks over his future here.
Age wise, they have time on their side but circumstance wise, very much different.

Downing wise, I factor in the fact that the lower possibility of bringing in top class wide midfielder, coupled with the fact that he gets more games and starts than the former duo. As the stats suggest, if we'd converted more of our chances, he would've broken his duck on assists and things would instantly look better than it is at the moment for him. With Gerrard back permanently and good additions into the team (esp. striker), things should look brighter for him.

In short, they have to (1) hope that signings of better players in their positions aren't made and (2) make miraculous improvement speedy enough to aid our quest for CL qualification/top 4 finish. That's quite a ask.

Sometimes I hope and believe that Downing can do what he does well even better, that Henderson will become a very good player and that Carroll just need confidence...but then I realise that Downing is average, Henderson is just à name on the team sheet and Carroll is really really shit!
