Di Maria ... yah we have no shot

the only question i have is how much they'll end up spending ... probably more than what our debt is!

Manchester City are rumoured to have agreed to smash the British transfer record with a £40 million bid for Benfica winger Angel Di Maria.

And City are also happy to top up their vast outlay to Benfica by a further £35 million for highly-rated centre half David Luiz. Well-placed insiders have told ESPNsoccernet that they believe a £75 million bid for the Benfica pair will be successful, as it tops all previous offers from rival suitors.

Such spending further increases the suspicion that City have a transfer budget that could even blow Roman Abramovich out of the water.

Ridiculous amounts of money there. We obviously will not be able to compete at this crazy market, so we should focus on spotting these players at an earlier stage.
Di Maria was marked as a rising star almost two years ago at the olympics. I remember people here (I think you were one of them, LTW) who said we should sign him. At the time the price was surely more reasonable and we had Mascherano on board who could have helped persuading him to sign for us. We didn't go for him - was he even on our scouting team's radar at then time?

I wonder that too Jimmy.

He moved to Benfica at around the same time we bought Riera, and for a similar fee too

Heh, why do you say "yah" instead of "yeah"? Is it a South African thing?

Yah Boet

Ah!

Anyways, yes, we have no chance of Di Maria. They signed him for 8m as well.

The thing is though, very few top clubs sign players like these and there is good reason for that - they can't afford to give them the game time to develop whilst still competing for trophies. They have the repuation and the money, so they just sign the finished product.

he wouldnt have got a permit here because of our rules and he isnt worth that kind of fee
You mean then (when signed by Benfica) or now. I believe he's been an established international for Argentina in the last year or so - is that not good enough for a permit in England? Why would City sign him then (unless they're thinking of loaning him to Benfica for a season until he can get a work permit).

when he signed for them he wouldnt have got a permit here, unless he was at Man Utd of course. He would probably get one now but he isn't worth the astronomical fee anyway so let city waste their money

I'm sure many of us here thought we could pick up Luiz for about 10 million. I'm astonished to see 35million being branded about. Then again, it is City.

I love Citys business model. "Let's pay over the odds for EVERY player we buy and also pay them extortionate wages - we're bound to win something eventually".

35million is a ridiculous fee for a centre back. Fucking ridiculous.
There goes the fucking Market again.

OK, I see what you meant. So looks like the way for us then was signing him and sending him on loan to Benfica or some other club.

ILD and Sunny, yes, they are blowing the bubble even more. Bound to burst eventually, and will probably not be a nice thing to witness.

Mate, they spent 25M on Joleon Lescott, and he sits on the bench.

We spent £20m on Aquilani......and he sits mainly in a doctors waiting room

It worked for Chelsea, although they had a better manager.

Can't wait to sit on a beach reading about Chelsea/ United/ Shitty bidding £50m for Players X, Y and Z, while we battle it out with Birmingham and Stoke for some free transfer from FC Shithole.

city do seem to be going about this in exactly the wrong way - surely any idiot can see that if they just got in the best possible manager and let him build a squad they'd win the league in no time?

the longer they carry on pissing money in random directions the better the chances of them getting bored and giving up, slim though they are.

damn you.

we will rise again through hard work, fan support and managerial continuity. some people have very short memories in football and dont understand that Benitez isn't a crap manager overnight, he's 50 and committed not to mention European cup winning manager and people want to dump him for the likes of O'Neill and Hodgson, it's beyond belief .

How does this work then, Headers?

Because if you don't factor in "money" somewhere, we are double-fucked.

I certainly don't want to dump him for the likes of those managers. That's a step down.

But that is the implication whether you like it or not.

You maybe frustrated with Rafa, his substitutions, some of his buys and his stubborness but you'll soon cry when O'Neill is making up excuses and his mates at the BBC are fawning over him

If we don't have money and Benitez will accept the challenge then we have to manage in a different way/ it may take some time to come to fruition but a few bad results for anyone other than Martin O'Neill and Jonathan Pearce will be convinced they're quitting Anfield the day after the next game and broadcast it as if it's a matter of fact. If it is O'Neill he's building a long term project and legacy of course while signing all the best British talent and doing a wonderful job (pass the sick bag).

I can't wait to see who the journalists trot out and thus convinced are qualified for the LFC job

There's no value in Rafa going unless we get new owners this summer.
Right. He should eat whatever stew he cooked for us 😉

O'Neill has signed some of the best British talent. Young and Milner would walk into our team. Mind you, so would Warnock.

What point are you trying to make?

Downing would be better than any of our LWs as well.

He has made some cracking signings, apart from Emile LOL
