We've been speculatively linked with him by journalists, but nothing really concrete yet. I've heard lots of people say he's a good defender, but personally I haven't paid much attention to him, so was curious to see peoples opinion of him? Is he one of the leagues better defenders, or just decent?

Whenever ive watched southampton play he has stood out. Very strong in the air and technically very good on the ball. He's the player agger was meant to become IMO.

I don't understand why we're buying him now instead of a year ago for half the price. He'd been talked about as a top young defender for ages so there's no excuses really.

A defender who does step overs! He looks good in that clip, he does seem to go to ground a lot though, I'm not sure if it just seems that way though as it's a highlight reel.

To be fair, we did sign one of Europes other top young defenders last season.

Lovren Sakho would be a fantastic partnership imho.

Not sure its justified paying 18 mill for Lovren though. Thats an awful lot of money.

Fuck agger off for about 10mill (if someone is stupid enough) and then add a few extra mill to get Lovren, bargain. One berk gone, one good player in.
We could also do with bribing someone to take johnson off our hands. He's reminding me of the downing situation now, where we need someone stupid to take him as he's wank. Wonder what west ham have at right back.

I can't the all these Southampton players rumoured to be on their way out leaving, but if Lovren is one of them I'm glad we've been all over it. He's exactly what we should be looking for and as mentioned before he can play either side, giving us the option to easily pair him with Skrtel initially and Sakho once he beds in.

Skrtel played great last season, but theres still a lot I don't like about him, Lovren Sakho would be the partnership for the future for me, all three would play heavily next season though.
There's no way Sakho gets ahead of Skrtel based on last year. If Lovren signs, Lovren-Skrtel will be the clear (and correct) first choice partnership.

If Sakho has a strong world cup, which I suspect he will, I can see him jumping ahead of Skrtel. I'd say it's a possibility.

Anything is possible, but managers generally don't rely on international tournament form when choosing between players they see train daily, 'cos well, that would be stupid right?

Maybe, but there's more than enough games for them all to play and be considered first choice, with form determining the starter.

Sakho proves why though.

You can pay not quite top money but good money for almost top quality players & you either have to develop them for a year or two to see them turn into world class or realise they're not quite at that level & never will be.

In short, it's a gamble, we put our gambling money on Sakho & saved a couple of quid to put on a 'sure thing that won't last' (kolo). There was none left for another gamble, we're not city who can buy anyone who they think can be world class.

If Rodgers does I'll lose faith in the man.

Momentum & confidence are one thing, consistency at a high level is the key in club football, much more so at the back than anywhere else.

Although, to digress a bit, even in AM, consistency is important, for me lallana would always get the nod over Coutinho cos he'll deliver more often, I know many will disagree, but Coutinho blows hot & cold (probably cos of his age so could change) if he didn't we'd have had a few more points last season.

Or you just make sure your scouting network is top notch - and they identify players with a greater degree of certainty in the faith of their ability translating.

If it's just taking gambles, why have a scouting department at all? I'll provide Youtube scouting services nearly free of charge to the club - and I don't have half a bad record!

I think it's just because it's a highlight reel. Every time I've seen him, he's been a stand-up, read the game the type defender. He's superb in the air as well.

I frankly don't think there are many top class defenders around at the moment - Lovren's one of the few who I think will join that club soon.

Excellent, that's just the type of defender I want us to sign

Every time I watched Southampton last season, Lovren impressed me. Looks a really good defender.
