Time to start a new thread on this one. James Pearce will likely wake up tomorrow morning and crushe our dreams, but we'll soldier on regardless.

The video is a reasonable overview of De Jong as a player. Can't say I'm blown away, especially when Tielemann's is one third of the price and accustomed to the PL, but maybe I'm missing something.

Anyone seen him regularly?

He said he wants to stay, Barca have said they want to keep him….not much more to be said about that.

Why is this a thread.

Didn’t realise they were same age. Hard to argue that FdJ is worth the premium, no?

It's not happening for multiple reasons but DeJong is a very good player. Barca are really playing to his strengths, if he was to come here he'd probably be competing with Thiago for the LCM position as he's in the same mold of progressive passer who can drop deep and receive the ball in dangerous positions. At 25 he'd be a good long term successor to Thiago assuming Klopp wants to continue with the Fab/Thiago style double pivot we've seen over the last 2 years.

2 weeks ago they threatened to take him to court and terminate his contract. They do not want to keep him. They need to clear him off the wage bill so they can register Kounde.

I still agree it's not happening

Then why don't we get Kounde ? Is he any good ? He must be better than Dong or whatever his name is if that's who they want instead. I mean they can't register Kounde, so let's get him.

Hes a centre back, they've already signed him for £50m but can't register him because of a salary cap

He stays or leaves, they still owe him the differed wages, moreover they still play him. Haven't Chelsea outbid us anyway, and they can offer him Barca wages.
I can't see how legally Barca can avoid paying the money he owed regardless of where he is? As good as De Jong is a time waster of a move.
If we are serious about getting a CM, then one that makes the most sense is Carlos Soler. 11G and 5 A in La Liga, 25 and in the last year of his contract

I agree, it's not a realistic target. Just my opinion that he offers a similar profile to Thiago in terms of passing and breaking a counter press but 6 years younger and more physical durability.

I'm assuming that Barcelona want him to sign a document forfeiting the right to claim the deferred wages. Which is why de Jong has not left yet.

Also only Man Utd have been in for him.

I read something this morning about how he's maybe not that suitable for us as a number 6; he's more of a controller than someone who breaks up moves. Dunno if that's true.

They want him gone but still play him. They owe him money and thinks if he moves he will sign the waver. I suspect the £17m is building interest too..
This is super waste of time, fans will be pissed when we lose another player on Saturday Nd sign no one

He is very all around, as I see it. If there is something to pick on, I would have liked a bit more strength and penetration.

Hes not really a pure DM like Fabinho, he's a very good all rounder but he's more similar in skillset to Thiago. If we are talking about replacing pir current CMs then Fabinho is the last on the list to be upgraded.

If he wants to stay at Barca then he must lack a footballing brain, they can keep him.

Are we actually being linked? There are so many 'options' to improve our midfield but I get the impression we've chosen one target and will be stubborn as they aren't available until next year

I guess the 'issue' with both De Jong and Tielemans is that they are more replacements for Thiago (as said by others) and we'd probably be better off with someone who can provide some genuine athleticism to our midfield or at least be able to fill in for Fabinho.

That said, if Tielemans is really available for ~20M though, it feels like kind of a no brainer... unless he wants mad money and all sorts of guarantees. He'd probably jump at the chance to ditch Leicester for us though.

For me, we're roughly 2 years from needing to replace thiago; if not sooner due to recurring injuries. I'd be all over tielemens or de Jong right now, as who knows when players of that calibre would be available. We can muddle through the season with Elliott or hendo on the other side, until Jude appears.

I'm hopeful bacjetic gets minutes, as we could already have fabinhos replacement/understudy
