You talk about players being encouraged to play a certain way, well you can't just draw names on a chalkboard and expect a couple of years of friendlies to transform a side. It doesn't work like that.

What makes Spain or Barca so formidable in terms of the way they play and keep possession is that these players jave been "encouraged" to do so from a very early age. It's second nature to them. As good as some of those Dutch players are, you can't say the same.

So the Spanish players individual brilliance far exceeds the Dutch and so does their ability to play as a team. Everyone in football acknowledges that you can't going toe to toe with that Barca midfield.

Even Wenger didn't try it.

It would have been hailed as a genius tactical masterclass.

How organisation and physicality can overcome 'beautiful' tippy-tappy bellend football

How the 'new' coaching style of whatsisface and Mourinho are 'redefining' football

How Barca/ Spain need to make changes because their vision of football is 'romantic' and not 'effective'

This is correct.

And Wimbledon was 88.

Spain completed 3800+ passes in the tournament. Germany were second with 2800+. So they managed a third again the amount of passes of their nearest rivals. Basically, if they get the ball, they keep it until it goes out. It's obviously going to wear down any opposition and the Dutch must have figured that the only way they could attempt to stop then was with kung fu to the sternum... and it nearly worked.

It wouldn't have done England any harm either. Given the lack of ability of the midfield to string 2 passes together they should have just been pinging it to Heskey and trying to win a scrum or line out.

The Dutch simply let themselves down. They lacked composure and didn't play as a unit.

It was a poor display and their physical approach was over the top. Spain deserved the victory!
