Covid-19 & Football

With Ligue 1 ending early the clubs wont recieve 250 mill in TV money, Rennes will for the first time qualify for the CL, Marseille is back after 6 years and Lyon miss out for the first time in 20 odd years.

Toulouse, and probably Lyon (its Aulas after all) will file lawsuits.

So by not playing its a massive loss in money and potential clusterfucks of lawsuits.
Good luck..

It's an absolute mess whatever way you slice it. There's no winning whatever they do, really.

UEFA have fecked up - quelle surprise - by being so hopelessly passive. They should have exerted a degree of control by telling all the national leagues, 'If you void the season, you don't get any clubs qualifying for our European competitions'. That would at least have applied some pressure across the different leagues to head in the same direction. As they haven't done that, they now face all kinds of issues relating to accepting those clubs who've finished their season and others that haven't. Shambles, as per.

The clubs are taking steps to test everyone possible. Fuck knows how many each club will have to buy.

Premier League clubs have invested in coronavirus testing machines that can turn around results in two and a half hours as they gear up towards finding a way to complete the season. The league is overseeing the initiative and it is understood that some clubs in the Championship have also purchased the machines, which cost £36,000 and are readily available.

The machines can test only one person every two and a half hours, meaning that clubs could realistically test seven employees each day with them. That, along with the cost, is probably why there is little demand for them from the NHS – whose test results take longer to return. It certainly sits easier with the clubs that they are not denying frontline workers access to testing.

Player and personnel testing is a major obstacle to English football finding a way to come back but the clubs are confident that with the machines they would have the means to check and safeguard their environments, particularly if they were to buy more than one machine.

At a meeting with its shareholder clubs on Friday, the Premier League will discuss new medical protocols devised to ensure a safe return to training and antigen testing for all players is one of the proposals. No defining votes are expected on training or return-to-play protocols. Instead it will provide an opportunity for clubs to air their thoughts on possible next steps while the league waits for the go-ahead from government.

A meeting between the department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and executives from a number of sports, including the Premier League, is due to take place later in the day.

Elsewhere in Europe countries continued to pursue varying approaches to resolving their seasons in the face of the coronavirus. In France there was confirmation that Ligue 1 had completed after 28 rounds, with Paris Saint-Germain declared champions and two teams, Amiens and Toulouse, relegated from the division.

In Spain the government decided on a protocol for a return to play in which clubs could be back in training on 11 May, though that is dependent on the approval of the department of health. In Germany, meanwhile, which had been anticipated to resume play by 9 May, the chancellor Angela Merkel pushed back a decision on any resumption to next week.

  1. Dunno. How long do you think?
  2. Probably why they won't use anything like a barracks for accomodation.
  3. That's just ridiculous.
1) Some manager say that all health worker should be tested before the players first. can't see this season restarting as I think that it will be September/October before a posible restart at best

2) No saying it will be barracks, but rather that you could have to sleep players and coaching staff on site. And would they all eat in a type of mess hall...?

3) May sound ridiculous, but it could happen

Are hotels able to open as normal over there?

I guess in terms of #2 I am imagining each club would be designated a whole hotel each, near enough to the grounds.

I don't think so...

But in terms of hotel for each team I don't believe there is that many around St. George's Park training grounds...
It only has 12 training pitches and they are close together,(Check video below) so I can't see that working to well as players and coaching staff would still need to travel in...
Players would need to travel to the club, then by coach to the hotel, then the were the game is taking place. Too many ways to come into contact with the virus or someone with it. Or a idiot that will spit at players while claiming that he or she has covid 19. Some sick mother fuckers about

After all this there will a new set of problems regarding the next season: e.g. will countries be left, as they are now, to set dates for the start of their respective league seasons, and, if so, what happens to the transfer windows and the timing of European competitions? Before that, some countries have already stopped the current season, so will be ready for a pre-season whenever it's suggested, while other countries will be playing on with the current season maybe into August or even later, so won't be ready anywhere near as quickly as, say, France, to start things over again. Then there will be the different government-directed dates and strategies relating to a new season (or even the lack of one). Unless UEFA start acknowledging that they're aware of this and working on an international agreement as to how to link everything up, the 20/21 season, at least as far as Champions League/Europa League is concerned, looks as messy as this one. I can see why individual FAs aren't pondering any of this - it's not really their responsibility and they've got enough to think about - but UEFA ought to be focussing on this and the various options, rather than, as usual, waiting until there's no real time for anything other than a frantic bout of panic decisions.

Only worry is that the current shitshow in Ligue 1 is making everyone nervous about voiding and awarding a title and final league positions, due to litigation.

So it's making us determined to TRY and finish the season, but then raises the possibility of voiding entirely with no Champions, European places or relegation? But then we have UEFA and their competitions, and other leagues all doing different things? And TV monies?

What a clusterfuck.

The daily fail reports that they discussed playing at the Emirates, etihad, & whatever West Hams shitbowl of a stadium is called, cos they're not surrounded by houses. I guess the fact they're modern & have more space for facilities too.

Sounds like they have done lots of research and have a fully-realised plan!

Of course, there's an easy get-out: if the Government don't OK it, and it falls outside of any UK recommendations, it will fall apart anyway, regardless of how many PowerPoint presentations some muppet has cobbled together.

I only hope it's seen - correctly - as a valuable signifier of a return to normality and a much-needed morale boost for everyone who like football, but you've already got Aguero whining that he's too scared, so who knows.

I read something about Liverpool & other clubs buying machines that test for covid-19. Apparently they're too costly & take too much time to process for the NHS etc to use them, so it means clubs can test staff & players regularly without being accused of stealing tests from those who need it.

Everton purchased these said machines and ended up with these

[article]The Independent has been told that two clubs are still in favour of ending the season, and were especially vocal about neutral grounds.

Who are the 2?

Well in favour of ending the season, spurs. They could also have an argument about neutral grounds I suppose, I'd say West ham were the other ones, but it's apparently their ground that's been chosen (amongst others)
, so seems odd.

Spurs and West Ham were my first thoughts. Then I was confused why they’d then offer up their own stadiums if they’d want to cancel it.

I’m not arsed about the asterisk if it happens. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.
Lfc twitter is going all in on the asterix. Banners & merch being designed all over the place.

I esp like the idea of CHAMPIONS, but the I is in a different colour, as is the the O, which is stylised like a 9 with an asterix as the hole, but no one seems to have picked it up yet.
