It wasn't exactly on the menu, but Derek Hatton dished up a bitter tirade while recording the Come Dine With Me election special.

The former Labour councilor branded political commentator Rod Liddle a 'f*****g fat, useless lump' and a 'pathetic bully' in a bitter rant at his host.

The fellow guests - Conservative ex-minister Edwina Currie and policeman turned Lib Dem Mayoral candidate Brian Paddick - watched on in horror as the firey exchange took place over the dinner table.

Producers were forced to step in to calm Hatton when Liddle called his political views 'f*****g bonkers'.

The row began when Hatton overheard Liddle making a rude remark about him when he delivered his scores.

They had to be escorted separately to their cars by production staff at the end of the final night and the pair have not spoken since.

The show airs this evening as part of Channel 4’s Alternative Election Night.

Hatton also came to blows with Currie, a former lover of John Major, in the battle to top the culinary polls.

Tensions rpse between the fellow Scousers over brown rice and their Liverpool roots.

After what was described by sources as the 'dinner party from hell', Paddick concluded: 'If Come Dine With Me has taught me anything, it is to be grateful for the friends I have.'

Come Dine With Me Election Night Special airs tonight at 9pm on Channel 4.
Too many cooks: Brian Paddick appeared on the programme too, which forms part of Channel 4¿s Alternative Election Night
