From today's Echo:
UEFA may face no choice but to rip up plans to hold the Champions League final in St Petersburg if Russia invades Ukraine. The biggest game in club football is due to be held at the Gazprom Arena on May 28, but this may all change if things escalate.

As things stand, there are no plans to move the showpiece final, but UEFA are keeping a close on all of the developments and will take action if Vladimir Putin decides to invade Ukraine. The Champions League final is thought to be worth more that £60 million to the host city, but UEFA have moved the final before. Indeed, just last year the final was switched to Porto on three week's notice due to COVID concerns in Istanbul.

Hopefully they move the final and then various govt agencies freeze all of Abromavich assets

That would be a dream scenario. I think another Russian oligarch – Alisher Usmanov – owns big parts of both Arsenal and Everton (no idea how this is legal).

Have patience dear child, you'll soon enough realise why freezing bank accounts is not only legal, but doing so is a righteous blessing upon the devout populations of the west.

What you mean like Trump's may be now that his accountants have fired him and announced his accounts for the past 10 years are not credible?

Don't be so silly my child, what on earth makes you think the exceptionally wealthy are bound by the same rules as us?

I know it’s highly unlikely, but it would be fucking hilarious if the government were to sanction Abramovich and Usmanov over the Ukraine situation,

Or the Canadians who donated to a peaceful protest and are now under threat of being hunted down and having their accounts frozen and their lives made miserable by their fascist PM.

governments going after common citizens for their “wrong views” - who’d have thought.

Could we keep the usual free world conversations in the usual place, not requesting to cancel anyone but it’s not like there’s not enough threads on in GF already.

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey welcomes the PM's statement but urges him to go further on sanctions.
He calls for the UK to freeze and begin seizing the assets of Putin's cronies and expel these oligarchs from the country.
Davey also asks if Johnson will push for the Champions League final to be moved from St Petersbourg.
In response, the PM says he thinks it "inconceivable" that major international football tournaments can take place after the Russian invasion of a sovereign country.

On Russian money, he says the UK is cracking down on "ill-gotten gains in London" and the cronies of Putin.

Don't buy tickets to St. Petersburg yet, lads. Have a feeling it might be Istanbul again.

It won’t happen in Russia despite how long UEFA will hold out for.
Are there any Russian clubs left in any of the Europa league still?
