Chinese "Devil Virus" - anyone worried?

Well that's likely to be very hyperbolic. Fact is most deaths have been to the over 60s or people with already compromised immune systems. And people that fall into those categories have a responsibility to manage their own lives as best they can and not have the Govt. do that for them.

It's a tough line to walk actually because let's be clear .. it's a version of the Flu. Yes it's new, yes it's clearly more virulent (R1.4 - 2 for flu and R3-4 for Covid-19) and has a much higher fatality rate (that said still likely far less than 2% of infected, bearing the vulnerable parties in mind). That said the Chinese reaction and unprecedented lockdown has prevented, or probably more accurately slowed down, a global pandemic.

So do Govts. and independant bodies try to emulate the Chinese 'panacea' ? Well clearly Italy, Japan & South Korea at the very least are going down that road. NZ & Aus had total bans on any Chinese nationals entering and the USA had a ban on anyone coming from, I think only, Hubei and Wuhan.

The question is twofold, will these measures have any lasting effects or are they just speed bumps and secondly is the long term cost worth it (the side effects to both the national economies and to individuals/families) could be just as devastating depending on how they materialise and how you personally measure them.

Yes, as you said people have the responsibility, but I think the Government has to take the lead, not only in making us aware of threat, but ensuring that the spread of Covid -19 is minimized. Because although at present people are dying from flu there is "The Flu Jab vaccine" which offers some protect against the seasonal flu Virus against Covid-19 there is no vaccine so the potential of spreading the virus is higher and with the vaccine the seasonal flu is less likely to develop in people.
And because there is no vaccine to counter it Covid19 has the potential to mutate the more that it spreads...

Japan tried a half assed quarantine aboard a cruise ship (The Diamond Princess) which only lead to more of the passengers testing positive for the virus, (From 10 to 630) and those passengers being shipped back to their countries infected with Covid-19

The half assed way in which this Government is handling things almost makes me wonder if it is some plan to "Thin The Herd" and thus save the planet :nailbiting:

Well the other factor to consider is that most people who have the virus likely never know they had it, for most the symptoms are minor and nothing worse than a minor cold/cough. So the real number of people having contracted it could be x10 higher and therefore the mortality rate actually more like 0.2%.

Actually the cruise ship is an excellent study. The most interesting aspect perhaps being that out of 3,000+ people in very close proximity to at least one or more infected people ONLY 630 contracted the disease.
As far as the Japanese quarantine was concerned - yes clearly errors were made however TBH those that were going to contract it were likely infected already ! WHO says a 7-10 day incubation period, and the cruise wasn't that long !
 
Cases in Italy and Tenerife now too.

With 80 kids from an Irish school having returned at the weekend from one of the affected Italian regions.

It's only a matter of time here now too.
 
And now it's being reported a lot of Irish schools had ski trips to Italy last week. Including the secondary school a mile away from my home.

It was always only a matter of time. We could never control the spread of any flu virus, to think that humans could do anything but slow it down is just hubris.

Same in Cheshire.. two schools closed as a precaution.

We really are going to have our premier league snatched from us lol.
 
Can we be not being racist and stop calling it a Chinese virus? I am deeply offended. Call it the devil (scum/manc) virus for all I care.
 
Peace time is really fucking the planet. We need a decent population cull. I don't think this will be it, but I'm pretty sure we'll they'll be a pretty sizeable one in the next 70-100 years. Globalisation, mass-travel, the rise of antibiotic resistance, Chinese people eating anything with eyes. It's the perfect storm.
 
We Chinese eats anything that moves with backs faces The Lying Rag. I gather some English eats jellied eels and whelks. Scots eat stuffed sheep stomach. French eats snails. Soon everyone will be eating processed proteins from maggots and larvae., once the locusts devastate Africa India and Pakistan... Maybe we will start eating one another?

You forgot climate change, which really will fuck us all up. The ice caps will melt and places that are low lying will be underwater. Bangladesh, Florida, The Netherlands, er, Norfolk, will all be gone. Hundreds of millions of people will be refugees making the current refugee crisis look like a music festival. Then some forgotten virus will escape the thawing peramfrost and we'll have fun.
 
Harvard University epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch is predicting the coronavirus "will ultimately not be containable" and, within a year, will infect somewhere between 40 and 70 percent of humanity, The Atlantic reports. But don't be too alarmed. Many of those people, Lipsitch clarifies, won't have severe illnesses or even show symptoms at all, which is already the case for many people who have tested positive for the virus.
That's precisely why he doesn't think the virus can be stopped. Viruses like SARS, MERS, and the avian flu were eventually contained in part because they were more intense and had a higher fatality rate. In other words, if you were infected by the virus that caused SARS, chances were you weren't out and about. But because the current coronavirus, known as COVID-19, can be asymptomatic, or at least very mild, there's a better chance people will likely go about their day as normal.

The down side, though, is that it becomes harder to trace and prevent. In that sense it's similar to the flu, which can also be deadly, but often passes without the infected person seeking medical care.
The Atlantic reports Lipsitch is definitely not alone in his prediction. There's an emerging consensus that the outbreak will eventually morph into a new seasonal disease, which, per The Atlantic, could one day turn "cold and flu season" into "cold and flu and COVID-19 season."

The rat eating bastards have triggered a global recession just in time for our post-brexit global trade negotiations. Long have I foreseen this doom. Soon we will be the ones forced to scavenge around the streets hunting rat meat.
