Chinese "Devil Virus" - anyone worried?

Jokes aside, there has obviously been far fewer Covid patients in hospital during Delta compared to previous waves.

The issue now is that previous peaks in the waves have been as we were coming out of winter and all the other pressures the NHS deal with every winter were easing off. Now we're going into winter and a potential worse variant is already here.

You said there's no evidence it's mild... I, and others have alluded to some evidence it is. Is there any evidence to suggest it's worse?

There isn't enough evidence either way. It's a wait and see.

Some very limited data from South Africa suggests it *might* be milder.

The type and number of mutations suggests it *might* be more transmissible and evade some of the vaccine.

I just took exception to you jumping to it being worse when there's nothing to say it is yet. That's how we end up in this hysterical mess when the media and politicians use rhetoric such as that.

I didn't say it's going to be worse. I just said it's possible.

I work in public health and deal with Covid stuff all day. I've spent the last 2 weeks contingency planning in case Omicron is worse.

If its worse then they'll want to extend my contract and I don't want them to. Another reason I want this to be over.

South Africa, with hardly anyone vaxxed, population same size as ours, with omicron the main variant now, are averaging 20 deaths a day, six times less than us.

Quick, close the borders.

This is what I don't get about our govt imposing all these new transport conditions. We're still the global basket case. It should be everyone else locking us down.

Younger population? More vitamin D? Less obesity? More testing here? More likely to put covid down on death certificate here? Think it's probably a combination of all of the above.

In any case, as I said before, the latest figures show 0.3% mortality rate. We might be doing worse than everywhere else, but it's still not that bad considering how it was before.

Locking down is political. I saw they red-listed Nigeria and assumed they must be having a wild surge of cases. The numbers were tiny. It's about who curries favour with the government a lot of the time, I imagine.

Mortality rate is only one part of it though. If there was a 100% mortality rate and it wasn't spread, it wouldn't be a big deal. It's the combination of how easily it's spread (without restrictions and vaccines), and that it causes a material amount of people to end of in hospital/ICU/dead, that are the issue.

Of course, but it's the fear and hysteria for me. The vast vast vast amount of the population shouldn't be panicking over their personal safety, nor that of their loved ones if they're healthy. Be careful, of course. But it's the mass hysteria, the handing over of liberties, the long term effects of what we're doing to the coming generations that seems way out of balance for me, and some perspective is needed.

I think their legal immunity could be waived by this totally surprising act of fraud and witholding of data.

You should sue them for the myocarditis. They will settle and pay you. If they don't, then change to your alternative login and the rest will be history.

A corporate Christmas party in Norway turned into an Omicron superspreader event, with up to 60 people possibly infected, officials say. The outbreak has become the biggest outside South Africa, where researchers first detected the new coronavirus variant.

“This party has been a superspreader event,” Preben Aavitsland, a senior doctor at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health said. “Our working hypothesis is that at least half of the 120 participants were infected with the Omicron variant during the party. This makes this, for now, the largest Omicron outbreak outside South Africa.”

The party on November 26 was organised by renewable energy company Scatec, which also has operations in South Africa. At least one person who attended the party had recently returned from South Africa, according to multiple reports.

All attendees were fully vaccinated and had tested negative before the event. Fifty people who attended had positive PCR tests for coronavirus, while another 10 have tested positive on lateral flow tests, according to the Norwegian state broadcaster

Pfizer are a despicable corporation. As are the rest of those major pharmaceutical companies

Its actually 130 now. 70 guests from the Christmas party and 60 other guests from the same venue.
Insane how easy its spread.

I wouldn't limit it to that industry, I'm not sure what the tipping point is, if it's a valuation or some time after they are listed on a stock market, but all companies over a certain size are pretty despicable.

It is when they get big enough to make campaign donations, or when they get in enough to win state contracts, or when they get important enough to lobby and advise the state on regulations, or all of the above.

Basically when they turn from capitalism to socialism, they become despicable.

I actually think capitalism is the issue, becoming beholden to increasing profits by whatever means necessary.

Dunno, tech companies are pretty awful. Gambling, insurance, fast fashion...all pretty shitty.

Yeah shitty, but not going out of their way to cause civil wars*, or writing thousands, sometimes millions of lives off as collateral damage on their projects.

*Facebook only facilitates genocide, doesn't start it, yet.
