Chelsea v Liverpool Match Thread

You've been hitting the Bushmills haven't you @doctor_mac 😀

No, but a full day in The Lying Rag, milling about with people with beer then cider. It has been excellent. Planning a trip to Liverpool with a guy who has a campervan and a red who I've watched every game so far with whilst drinking at leisure. Bank holiday heaven.

If it was in the 70% you’d say the opposite.
Chelsea’s game was all about attacking us on the break. That your nr 6 doesnt make any mistakes in the passing game would seem quite obvious as a minimum.

Obviously not as 100% is almost non existent for CM's for a reason.

80-95% is acceptable.

It was a difficult game for our no 6 to start taking chances yesterday. Chelsea had a few good counters and if we had start spreading poor balls from our deepest midfield, especially with fullbacks pushing high we could have faced more trouble. I think we gave what we got. Chelsea have never been easy to break down when they are in that mold and we didn't have that extra juice to run them harder. However we just have to take the result and prepare for next game. Sulking will not help us now, and winning one more game will take us to CL. Winning 2 more games will make it possibly the best season this century so I remain upbeat about this team of ours.

Send Klopp a message and ask him to tell Gini that he needs to misplace at least 15 of the 100 passes he plays during a game.
The goals conceded from breaks from poor passes doesn't matter.

Meh, 100% accuracy for 100 passes to Lovren/VVD over 20 yards is nothing to write home about

I don't blame gini for not passing forwards, we didn't have the opportunity to do so very often at all without exposing ourselves.

I said within ten minutes of the match thread we'd see almost nothing but backwards & sideways passing because of the way Chelsea set up.

Conte took full advantage of their fresher legs & our lack of depth in midfield to make it almost impossible to play it forwards from his position.

Of course, we're he more talented he'd be able to lose a man & break forwards at times, but he isn't, so he played within his limitations. Had he tried to do marauding runs with it we'd have been dispossessed repeatedly & he'd be getting slagged off for that too.

Didn't take enough risks.

He was probably our best player. It wasn't all sideways, safe passing, he was incisive from deep and instrumental in starting our counterattacks, by dropping his shoulder and turning us on the offensive quickly. He's been a very hit and miss player, but when he does perform he's usually a catalyst for how quickly we turn defense into attack.

I wonder sometimes if he actually watches the game. Then I wonder if he actually thinks before he fingers hit the keyboard. So what Pat? He should have dropped off a bit and gave the ball away, just to give to make it look like he took more risks?

We weren't great as a side, but he was far from the problem.

I couldn't disagree more with you here.

He broke down nearly all attacks with his hesitancy, resulting in Chelsea getting players back

Obviously I'm eager to see a the completed passes chart, just to see how wrong I am, but loads seemed sideways or to the centre backs

When we won the ball back in our own box and went straight on the attack, he was the one getting a foot on the ball and not just hoofing it, but playing someone in. When he was further up the pitch, as ever, he was as you say, hesitant and made the wrong decisions. But from deep I thought he was alot better, maybe that's what Klopp needs to consider more when playing him.

Yeah, he was very good in our own half. The thing is Chelsea had 8 men behind the ball, compact and just outside their own area. There wasnt a lot of space to play in, and not much movement. Its no wonder the passes were going sideways in Chelsea's half.

That's where we miss a player like Coutinho or even AOC, just someone who can drive at a team and thread a ball.

When the movement ahead isn't quick enough or clever enough, it's always the midfielder who gets all the flak for not passing quickly enough. Yes, he was sluggish like the others most of the time, but I felt sorry for him when he looked up at his options.

I'd agree to that to a point, and generally it's right

But yesterday there were passes ahead, and mane was constantly making runs, milner and even Trent (who was naff).

There were options, but he hesitated consistently

What's the most galling is Gini clearly has it in his locker, and he's not played that much (comparatively to others). I just don't know why he plays so deeply in himself

Robertson, Trent, Firmino and Salah all seem to have dropped off a bit in form, even arguably VVD too. It's like fatigue has hit at the wrong time.

I wonder how much of an effect the heat has on our system too? It seems a daft theory really, but we were better and better throughout the winter months, it's probably difficult to replicate that intensity when it's scorching and you're losing fluid quicker.
