Chelsea v Liverpool Match Thread

I think we missed Sturridge – or a Sturridge replacement. That was my worry after January – not that we didn't immediately invest the Coutinho money to buy a comparable player (almost impossible to do that mid-season), but that we simultaneously got rid of our 4th (or 2nd or 3rd if you want to be generous to Phil) and 5th best front three players, so naturally that created a potential for huge drop-off between the quality of the starters and the bench. To be fair, there were a few ways this problem could have been mitigated without transfers – who knew that Lallana would be injured for the whole season or that Ox would tear his ligaments or that neither one of Solanke, Woodburn or Ings would be able to step up in any significant way. But unfortunately none of the positive scenarios came through.

Nothing. He will just have to make sure he buys the players we all knew he needed last summer. It would be a shambolic end to a season and quite embarrassing, but what are you suggesting? Sack him?

Please

Yeah but Salah will defo leave.

However... we will beat Brighton and Madrid.

The only question is, who was the greater loss? Buvac or Ox? My money is on Ox.

Hey... in truth the fact that our front six has been totally unchanged for six weeks or so and we’ve been knocking on 3 games a week including massive games...

Squad lacks depth... but it doesn’t lack quality.

Even when fucking knackered we probably deserved a point away at Chelsea so...

We have a week to recover and play a cup final at home, if we don’t win then we have an escape clause in Kiev.

Bit pissed off with our Karius for Girouds header... what the fuck is he just watching it for? Obviously needed a reaction... just watched it sail in when MAYBE if he had dived he could have got a touch on it. Sadly it’s not the first time hes just watched, I can’t remember the game now but he did the same a few months back... improve your reactions a bit Karius.... cmon...

2 cup finals left... let’s win both... take it all.

Also, a point or more will guarantee Huddlesfield premier league football next season, hopefully they fucking play for it on Wednesday.
Yep, it's far from a gimme that game. Spurs could have a tricky couple of games against Leicester & Newcastle too.

Wow, you really are pathetic.
Guys been gone a year. Give him a pre season and we'll see who's first choice.

Sorry mate - he was so poor today. Every time he was pressed, he moved backward and passed backward. No confidence whatsoever - and it's not like he hasn't played football. He's a very good defensive FB (no one will have an easy time with Hazard when the fucking unprofessional tit finally shows up) but I don't think he'll be ahead of Trent next year ... Trent is good enough defensively and eons ahead of him with the ball at his feet.

I've noticed very little criticism for Virgil for their goal

He went walkies
True...he should have stopped it before it reached the sandwiched Lovren. But whats worrying is our complete inability to break them down at the back and create genuine chances. This is where i dont buy into the Firminio/Salah hype...when they are up against big imposing accomplished defend first block out defenders with exceptional concentration levels..both are fucked.

You'd have to ask Klopp why he decided to swap Mane and Firmino today but it was clearly a stupid Idea.

I have always maintained that whoever you brought into that back 4, the personnel always get the stick when the problem is systematic. Matip wasn't shit. Lovren wasn't shit. VVD wasn't shit. But now...

There was something incredibly Brenton about that display today. We need a point so we go hunting for a goal. They needed a win, so it was our job to sit back, but what happened? Same opponent, same need, same result. Pathetic from Klopp.

They won the league playing like that last season and we have been running like crazy with the same 22 legs for three weeks. That 1/10 of a second we are running late in situations today is crucial. So no worries. Å week of soft training and rebuilding will do us good. And it is not given thay this boring shower of shit wins 2 more games.

I don't actually think it was a bad performance. It certainly wasn't as bad as Wednesday. It looked bad because the right balls were a fraction too late, the touch of Salah and a few others was slightly off, everything was slightly off. It wasn't the stupid kind of performance we've seen recently. It was all just a bit off. And a really fresh team, who won the title last season and still have players who, when they're motivated like they were today, can really hurt you, exploited that.

But go prior to the mental fatigue of today, and you're left with the horrible sloppiness that's lurking there, that we saw second half on Wednesday that apparently never existed. That's my worry. To win the champions league you need to be mentally sharp - we can regain that - and fit - and we can recover that - but you sure as hell can't win it with as shambolic play as we had for the last 40 or so minutes against Roma. Maybe some by now will have sobered up and will drop the idiotic abuse and think more carefully about that.

@gkmacca ... you are totally right ... but timing is absolutely critical to this team...the pressing and movement has to be spot on for us to win. It is in these moments where a coutinho type player is very useful...luckily there are not that many times such a player is required. They really need to sort themselves out.

It's been very hard to call, because there have been so many factors to consider as far as recent league games are concerned - fatigue, fear of picking up an injury and missing a huge CL game, a lack of absolutely clear needs to win rather than draw games, etc etc. But in the semi finals, when it's the biggest game of most if not all of their lives, when their brains and bodies should have been buzzing from start to finish - I've been pretty alarmed. I'm not sure what else you judge how we'll fare in the final - the West Brom game or the Roma game? I can find excuses for the West Brom game, and today's game, but not the Roma game. That's just a bit scary. Probably only me, feel free to post endless cheap cues for likes with snide responses.

The goal was simply unlucky (a deflection - it was going behind Giroud not straight on to his head, before flicking off Mane's head). If anyone is to blame it's Robbo for letting the cross in - but Moses had a very good game and has that class to trick a defender in his armoury.

VvD was exactly where he should have been, covering the front post since Robbo had been dragged out wide, so he most certainly wasn't out of position. Lovren had moved forward to keep the right gap between him and VvD and Karius was beaten by a great header from 5m out (WTF are you on about Molbystwin saying 'why didn't he dive, he could have got a hand to it', what utter bollocks) !

As I said, it was no surprise, given the magnitude and emotional and physical toll of the 4 games vs. City and Roma, that we lacked mental and physical acuity, it was pretty damn obvious that was going to be the case - I'm surprised though that we pushed them to the wire, we deserved a point, so unlucky but well played and we'll get the three points required next week vs Brighton when we come back refreshed and fully recuperated.

I knew this was going to happen, so I bet £40 on Chelsea at little better than evens.

With betting, you have to bet on what you think will happen, not what you want to happen.

I would have been delighted to lose my stake.

Gotta love the roller coaster that is a match thread.

Beat Brighton next week, Beat Real and it's been an amazing season.

Fail to win both and the world is ending.

Only Liverpool eh.

Maybe some by now will have sobered up and will drop the idiotic abuse and think more carefully about that.

Yeah we have, have you? Its a bit rich trying to drag the arguement back up again now. Last I saw, you scarpered from the whole thread the other night, after your scathing attack on our terrible 2005 team, when you were made to look like a twat. I suppose this is where I direct you back to GC to put in another complaint about me. Blame Fabio too, you usually do.

Our Performances have dropped off over the few weeks. Against shite teams we can get away with it.......against quality we get punished and Chelsea know how to defend a
Lead. Our one Dimensional tactcis cost us. Why were we, chasing for victory. Chelsea had to win but we seem to have only one way to play. Long term it’s worrying as there’s plan A and then that’s it.

I said in another thread I wasn’t arsed about this game. Fuck I’d have played the reserves. A weeks rest smash Brighton sideways then have a week in Malaga then go the Ukraine and fuck Madrid.
