Meh, has the same # of goals as Tony Le Tallec. Why is everyone so interested in him?
Because he's going to be one of the best players in Britain in a few years time.

As opposed to TLT, who's probably not even the best player in his own family.
haha

What's he got that convinces you of that?

Actually, Aaron Ramsey. There's one.
Wasn't the deal in place waiting for Board ratification until they declined to pay 1.5 miilion for the teenager?

Having invested so much time and effort in his attempts to woo Chamakh, missing out on a player who has attracted rave reviews in Ligue 1 would leave Benitez hugely frustrated.

He was convinced at the end of the transfer window that Liverpool would soon be in a position to announce Chamakh’s signing.

Liverpool FC manager Rafa Benitez admits defeat in fight to sign Marouane Chamakh

One report today said sources close to the 26-year-old have suggested the Reds’ hierarchy had mismanaged the contractual side of the deal and been ‘fussy’ over contract details.

Sack Parry............oh

I'm taking all these reports with a pinch of salt. The player's representatives are said to have been keen on him coming to us, but the player himself is reported to have said he wants to go to the Arse. If that's the case, why would Rafa now be that cheesed off? It doesn't add up.

Whether to sign for a London club and get to be close to a huge Moroccan community and on better wages, or for us with lesser wages, a moroccan Restaurant in Southport and Nabil as yer best mate.

It's a tough one.
The article quite clearly states Arsenal are willing to match our offer, it's not better wages. But that wouldn't suit your argument at all.

It's quite clear why most players would sign for Wenger rather than Benitez right now though.
cf. Mark1975's later post.

Regards the article it states "The North London club would have no problem matching the £60,000-a-week wages" which, to my mind, implies that our offer isn't generous in the world of footballer's remuneration and well within Arsenal's budget.

I do think London is also a big draw and should not be underplayed.
The latest rumours say the offer from Arsenal is actually 50k a week. But as I throw up one rebuttal you throw up another excuse.

Arsenal actually attempt to play football, he'd step into a team with numerous creative players which will give him plenty of hcances to show his ability . If he signed for us his game would be all about chasing back, defending corners and he'll be judged mainly on workrate. That's not to mention the fact that we only play one up front and his gametime would be limited.

Can you rebut something with a rumour?

That's a new one on me. Please explain.

As regards the role of a quality striker in our system I'd say Fernando Torres seems to do quite well in it. I think he compares favourably with anyone at Arsenal.

Tut tut you've become bitter.

He has just come out and said he wouldn't rule out a move to Liverpool.

Think its BS though... just trying to sweeten his contract terms with Arsenal me thinks.

Wasn't Theo Walcott meant to come here but then chose Arse instead?
Many Arse fans have lost/ are losing patience with him.

He was fucking *gutless* on Wednesday, and his attempted "cross" was pure shithouse; he was scared of getting clattered so just poked it lamely at Reina.

I think we were interested, but were never prepared to pay anything like the money Arse offered. He is well known to be A Pool fan.

He isn't shit, but he certainly does play shit for them. I've been down to Emirates stadium a fair few times, and he really suffers from the pressure of expectation.

Whenever he's on the ball, there's an air of expectation that he should just run past players.. when he doesn't do that, or loses the ball, there are huge sighs and groans. It's similar to the Eboue treatment at times, but only they seem to expect more from Theo. It's strange to say, but from what i've witnessed, right now, I can only imagine him playing well away from home (well, until he's mentally tough enough to deal with pressure of his own crowd or has the confidence to mess up and come back from that).

I wonder if part of the problem lies in the fact that he wants to play as a central striker but his managers just don't see him in that role (rightly IMO). Maybe he hasn't fully accepted that his future is as a wide right player and knuckled down properly to it yet.

I think Walcott's problem is probably that he was picked for England at 17 and has been hailed throughout his career, on very little evidence, as being a future world star. His confidence may have fallen into the yawning chasm between hype and reality.

Out of curiosity Bren have your stance on Bendtner changed? I couldn't help to notice that you've actually spelled his surname right in your ratings-thread, which of course could've been a typo?

With regards to Theo it sure does seem like he's gone backwards in his developments. Maybe we should try and swap him for Babel. Although I'd fear that Babel would bloom at Arsenal and Theo maybe not so much at ours.

I doubt Wenger would agree. He was sniffing around Babel long before our interest was reported. The fact that he didn't go ahead and sign Babel worried me from the start.

There's just something about Babel that tells me he would probably be better suited to Arsenals style of play. We are obviously more interested in having proper footballers out wide instead of the more atheltic, pacey types.

Maxi and Riera are much more similar to the types Rafa had at Valencia like Aimar and Vicente, whereas Babel is more similar to the likes of Henry, Walcott and Pires in style of play. (Obviously he is not anywhere near Henry's class but you'll get my drift).

Don't know whether that's a right assessment really but I wouldn't bet against him beeing a success at Emirates despite his obviouos flaws and apparent lack of focus/whatever.

I don't know really, I see him as another Owen JJ

regards

Don't think so, Vlad. As far as I can see he has the pace but not the mental or physical toughness. Between them Owen's singlemindedness and upper body strength played a large part in his success, and Theo can't match him for either IMO.

From the looks of it, Arsene has lost faith in young Theo aswell.

Cheeky bid at 12 mill this summer would be nice. I think there is a brilliant player somewhere in there. We could well need the pace.

Theo has suffered from injuries and a lack of confidence has resulted from it. I'm not impressed with him and I wouldn't buy him. He's quick but he's not good enough a footballer.

I imagine he's the type who progressed because of his pace, probably ball over the top and he outstripped some big clumsy center half and scored so fancied himself as a striker.

I don't recall even seeing a step-over from him.

Theres a brilliant player in Babel too apparently but Rafa aint got nothing out of him! Hows he gonna get it out of someone that wenger (the king of developing youth 😛) hasnt!

I struggle to be that impressed with him. If he's got space to run into, he can look very good, but it's not often he gets that and just ends up looking lost as a result.

He's still only 20 years old, so it's early doors. It's only recently that some are saying Aaron Lennon is beginning to mature.

Walcott is similar to Babel in that he is used in a system that cannot get the best out of him. He needs to play on the shoulder of the defender, he has lightning pace but isnt really a great dribbler, he wasnts to run into space. To release a player like that you have to get the ball to him early and let him run at a defence before they settleback into 2 banks of 4. Arsenal will kick the ball sideways for about 5 minutes before they get the ball wide to walcott. To get the best out of him they need to change the way they play, its strange because Arsenal at theor most sucessful were a great counter attacking team that played on the break, Walcott would have been perfect in that system, now they play a far more tactical posession game and it favours a different style of player.

Babel is in a pretty similar scenario, although hes more clrealy suited to playing as a striker to a winger
