Cavani..

He's presently on 160k a week at PSG. That's a ridiculous demand if true then.

Suarez was making 200k under his new contract I think. There's no way we'd go beyond that for any player.

So this is progressing?!

I know very little about him. Is he a CF or would he play across the front? Or is he a No 10 type player?

I guess what I'm trying to say is, can he play in our current formation with Studge being the focal point/ No. 9?

Cavani is a striker with pretty much no weaknesses. Superb finisher, leads the line with his physical presence, excellent, if not overly flashy, technique, very hard-working, has good vision for teammates, hardly misses any games, in Napoli he was adored by fans and had really good rapport with them. Compared to Higuain who replaced him in Napoli, he is just an all-around better player – ask any Italian or Napoli fan. I really don't get the negativity towards Cavani from some posters here, because it flies in the face of all evidence – whether its stats, reputation, or even youtube compilations (you can hardly find more impressive ones than Cavani).

If we get Cavani, then he is obviously going to lead the line as a #9 and Sturridge with alternate between dropping deeper and playing "on the shoulder" of the last defender to run onto through balls and knockdowns. Kind of like Suarez plays off Cavani for the national team or how Lavezzi played off him at Napoli.

Its because he's played poorly in a few games. Probably against English teams in the CL.
He's quality. No doubt.

Yeah, I saw him against Chelsea in the CL – that was probably the single worst game I've ever seen Cavani play. But this is like judging Suarez based on one of his "off" games.

You have to look at stats and reputation and technique. Comparing Cavani to Soldado is just... they are not even in the same universe talent-wise, and never have been.

Exactly. I've watched him since he played for Palermo. There is no question about his quality.

Ben smith reporting approaches for Falco, Cavani, and benzema have been been made but been told no chance.

Not clear if its the players or clubs saying so

Yes, the comparison to Soldado and Morientes doesn't stand. Both of them are/were largely finesse players who thrived on good service, and their ability in the box. Cavani is a very physical player, and isn't dependent on good service alone. His work-rate is excellent and he'll create chances through his aggression and his physicality alone.

He doesn't have world class skill or technique, but he's more than able technically, has a ferocious shot, and is very good at leading the line as a #9. I think his lack of really flashy technique or skill sometimes makes people think he's not all he's hyped up to be, but he's a bit like Drogba in that sense - not always impressive on the eye, but still a very very good striker.

My only concern with signing him is how he'd play with Sturridge. Sturridge is a tailor made no. 9 for our system, and I don't think he'd mesh with Cavani the way he did with Suarez. That said, I think if we can get him, it's a no brainer.

Do you not believe Cavani and Sturridge could work well as a two?

I saw him play in the Olympics over here - and he was utter shit for Uruguay then too. Now I have no doubt that he is a good player based on the goals he has scored but the price tag and ability just don't match. If we bought him now - is he as good as what Torres was when we bought him ? - probably not so I cannot see him being worth the amount that PSG paid for him. A few people have spoken of his great qualities on this thread and it sounds like to me he is the modern day Alan Shearer.

There probably is a touch of Ibra about Cavani at the moment in that he's underperformed in the CL and for his national team and it's damaged his reputation.

He is a good player - that ball to Suarez against England, for example, was no fluke - but is he 40M and 200k a week good?

For a club like PSG, City or anyone else with bottomless pockets it's fine. He is just one of many brought in on that kind of money. At Liverpool we need that player to be like Suarez - the difference between good and fucking great. So Rurik, Hansern, do you see him as that sort of player for us?

I don't think I do.

I couldn't see us paying that for him. If we've haggled with just about everyone else over wages and fees, it'd go completely against the rest of our Summer to just say, fuck it, let's blow a wad on a 27 year old and give him about twice the wage of our highest earners. It won't happen. I see Arsenal are linked now aswell.

That'd sort Arsenal out up top. A big upgrade on Giroud.

It is worrying though ? - hard to tell with this signing - really hard. If he had done something good against Chelsea then I reckon they would have tried to sign him along with Costa. I agree with Mark - we are being very careful how we spend our cash and cannot see us splashing that much on a 27 year old.
