I think Ross is right - Carragher certainly isn't a money-grabber, but he's certainly looking after his interests here. The timing cannot be a coincidence.
I'm also think Wilko's point is valid. Is he going to be performing to the standard of a £100k a week defender for the next three years? Very, very debatable.
Still, we were paying Aquilani 80k a week to sit on the bench and do fuck all, which does offer some perspective on this.

As much as it's preferable to to see great players for us honourable with good contracts over seeing wasters being over-paid and offer fuck all, a contract should only reflect what a player will offer us in the future.
It's a ruthless business, and one we've skirted around in recent years to our cost at times. We'll see a change under the new ownership.

Fair comment, Squiggs, but a player's worth to the club can exceed his playing ability. Sami was a classic example and IMO Carra's another.

Yeah, our demise under Benitez was certainly hastened by the departure of Sami. I have little doubt about that.
But Sami left for footballing reasons and not financial ones, so providing these sort of players were still around the first team, you have to wonder if these said players really would refuse a reduced contract offer.
I think the club are perfectly within their rights to do so.

Carra's relative pros and cons are well known at this point in his career and its pretty well established that his best days are behind him, some would say by a couple of seasons at this point, however anybody who isnt pleased to see him effectively commit to playing his entire career with us is a muppet not worth listening to
If by the time his contract is up in 2013 he is still our first choice central defender then the club would be in serious trouble and Id be interested to know if he ahs had to take a wage cut as he surely cannot expect to be a regular over the term of the contract
