Would have seen us winning the group and probably in the semifinals, where they would face someone decent, and lose.

They're just not as good at football as the press like to believe. A lot of it's hype. The only players to leave with any credit are James and A Cole.

Tactics or attitude? Of the 23 selected, only 4 players looked like they should have made the cut this time.

Anyone over 28 should be dropped and we should build for 2012/2014. Bring in the younger prospects now and not carry on with the dogshit.

Terry, Lampard, Heskey, Barry & Upson should all be set on fire.

And thinking about who to replace people, what the fuck ever happened to Woodgate? Has he dropped off the face of the planet? (im not suggesting he's a player to consider, just where is he).

Fuckyou very much Capello.

That's exactly what I wanted to see us play, Squiggs, that is the 'right' formation. I would feel a lot less sorrow today if we'd played that and lost. At least we would have done the best with what we have.

There's a case for playing Carrick instead of Lampard too.

He holds his position better and is a decent passer.

I know he's been shit for United, but then so have a lot of those German players for their clubs.

But dropping Lampard wasn't realistic, especially with how highly most people rate him. 4231 could have allowed him to have played all the big names in positions their much stronger in.

Tactical genius, my arse.

Agreed very much.

It's what Capello should have done when he took over.

The formation is maybe an excuse for 3 or 4 players being wank. What about the rest?
Problem is it's the 3-4 that could have made the difference. And in fairness, one player playing out of position is enough to mess up the dynamic of the team. I.e Stevie not keeping his position of gonna impact on the LB behind him, the CM's too etc.

capello fucked up big time, and therefore should be sacked.

dithering over gk selection.
playing upson.
still too supplicant to the stars like terry, lampard & gerrard.
no pace in the middle of the park. barry for their 4th goal was an embarrassment. it was a disaster waiting to happen.
where was crouch?
why the desperate chasing of the game at 2-1 that gifted them the goals that knocked us out?

it was the most pathetic and unforgiveable performance i've ever witnessed as an england or liverpool fan, and the final maggot on the gaping sore that was our world cup.

These players who play for the best clubs in European football didn't want the ball, they were not comfortable with the ball at their feet and wanted to spray a 30-40 yard pass everytime they had it and basically get rid of it.
If people remember that England V Argentina game where Beckham scored the pen..2002?There was a passing movement in the game of nearly 30 passes before Sheringham shot..we just don't do that.

I suppose I was confident we would go far in this tournament, mainly because of hype until I saw the USA game about half an hour in after a great start we started to look pretty poor and toothless

The Crouch issue is particularly mystifying.

Perhaps you might understand him not fitting in with the manager's intentions, and therefore not starting.

But when you're chasing the game why would you leave somebody who can hold the ball up and bring other people into play, and who happens to have a 1 in 2 record for his country, on the bench - and bring on Emile Heskey instead?

Bizarre

Liverpool, Chelsea, Utd... to a lesser extent.. spurs and Man city.. -- clearly up there with the best in europe

I've always thought a fully fit woodgate's the best of the lot. 'Fully fit' being the problem.
Strongly agree, the next best IMO being Rio and after him King. With none of them available we were always going to struggle.

Mind you, if King really was fit for selection against the Jairmens, Capello made a dreadful mistake not picking him instead of Upson.

Yup

apparantly rednapp says he's interested in the england job. he'd leave spurs who are in the CL for the first time in their history for the shambolic england setup? he is fucking IN-SANE!

That'd be great for England and Spurs' rivals for fourth place. 'Arry for England!

didn't hear it myself just the reactions on the radio, summary: it was short and he didn't apologise

harry only said he was interested in the england job because he said the next manager has to be english, he couldn't very well say he wouldn't touch the job with a shitty stick at th minute. although it wouldn't surprise me if he did manage england, just not with tottenham in the cl.

I did say slightly over the top Gareth. Im sorry to say that our own club is nowhere near the top in Europe, whilst Chelsea & Utd didnt even make the the last four in the CL

Actually, what the fuck does the england manager do half the time?

Is he sat wasting away the days on internationalmanager.com/forums?

Who'd take our regular poster places?

I'd like Redknapp to get the job.

Mostly because Spurs could sink back down the table.

Theres 6 million reasons a year why he would take the England job if the money is right Harry would go anywhere.

I'm not so sure now he's managed Spurs into the CL.

Surely he'd rather coach in that, as opposed to playing about 10 meaningless shit friendlies for the next 2 years.

Fingers crossed, though. His appointment would be best for Liverpool.

Since joining up for the pre-tournament training camp in Austria, many of England’s players struggled under Capello’s strict regime.

His old-school approach left players bored, stale, unhappy and believing the 64-year-old Italian is even out of touch with modern methods.

And former England striker Alan Shearer, now a BBC TV pundit, said last night: “I looked on the pitch and they are not happy players. It was not a happy camp.â€

How fickle can the media get? During the good run in qualification stage, he was being praised for his no-nonsense approach...

Good post. Heresy to say so but Hoddle's England actually played good football quite often.

When have England ever played good football?

WC 2010 - No
Eu 2008 - DNQ
WC 2006 - No
Eu 2004 - A bit
WC 2002 - No
Eu 2000 - No
WC 1998 - Yes (sort of)
Eu 1996 - Yes
WC 1994 - DNQ
Eu 1992 - No
WC 1990 - Yes (sort of, latter stages)
Eu 1988 - No
WC 1986 - Yes (latter stages)
Eu 1984 - DNQ
WC 1982 - A bit

They are the tournos I remember. Given that we didn't do much in the 70's (after 1970), its fair to say we've played about 8 or so good tournament games since 1966.

So, the odds weren't heavy in our favour.
