I can see that point but I don't really agree with him being overwhelmed, it's not as though he hasn't played on the big stage before....he's an England International at the end of the day

No need for sarcasm! 🙂 The fact that he has played for England means that sometimes he has been considered by people who know something about football to be one of the best English players around.
Ah c'mon. When he was selected could you name another English winger? All the good ones were not English. He got the position by default.

Even so, I don't think his failure for us is actually inexplicable. He wouldn't be the first previously decent player to make the transition to a top level club and find himself unable to cope.

Look... A while back we had this awesome thread where we all made the most ridiculously stupid MS Paint pictures of Stewie.

Then someone said.... Let's have then as avatars!!!!

Then someone added.... let's keep them as our avatars until Stewie scores.

It makes me pine for my head-bashing-keyboard avatar.

I cannot tell you how glad I am, that I wasn't party to such foolishness.

The fact you weren't is only surpassed in astoundingness by the fact Stewie has had as much impact in the league for us, as a 10p mix bag of rhubarb & custard and blackjacks.

Hmmm, where is Boreon, tonight ?

You can't really tell yours is Stewie. I mean he's a mask on and everything.

It's a social commentary on one mans failure to stamp his own identity on his destiny - or critique of another faceless footballer failing to come out from the mask of his own inadequacies and failures.

A few points:

1) I said it another thread and I'll say it again - I feel bad for Downing. He's not played nearly as well as he did for Villa, and his brief stay here can be summed up by his first game against Sunderland. Great shot, smashes off the crossbar and then anonymity. He has the skills to be a decent player for us. Nothing brilliant, not worth whatever we paid for him, but be a decent contributor. Even that he's struggling to do - he's been sapped of all his confidence (not Daglish or Rodgers' doing) and it's just not good for him here. Time for him to move on for his own good. He's been a disastrous signing, but I think he'd still produce decent stats (6 goals, 5-10 assists) for a Villa or Sunderland. I think we can get 10 million for him still ... He's English after all.

2) Enrique after a brilliant debut 6 months has been extremely average the last half season of 2011/12 and the first few months this year. He struggles to make the easy passes, and holds onto the ball far too long. He's not a Gerrard or a Suarez - a player who can do that and produce something magical. He will lose it and cause our (currently) average defense serious headaches. He's had quite a few opportunities in smaller games to get into a positive spin, but he's just struggled. I can see him going back to Newcastle, or to Spain. He's just not going to work in this system.

3) If the above both go, that would leave only Coates & Henderson from the 'senior player' signings made by Commoli & Daglish. Horrible waste of money ... Hopefully some of the kids they bought will turn out golden, but that was catastrophic.

3) Suarez signing gives Comolli a tiny star. I don't know how involved Kenny was with the transfers but I'm guessing he wanted British players especially Adam and Comolli just went berserk with the money.

I thought Kenny scouted Suarez?

It's not primarily a confidence issue. It's a talent issue.

Villa often played a counter-attacking game and that afforded Downing loads of space and time in the final third. At Liverpool he often finds himself in tight spaces with clusters of defenders to wortk through. He's not got the skill, technique or creativity to excel in those kind of situations and so he either a) passes it back, b) floats a hopeful cross in or c) and most depressingly utilizes his shift to the side and lose the ball routine.

The Downing Failure is no great mystery. He's a good midtable player for a midtable side and he never should've been promoted beyond his means. The notion that good players for average sides should suddenly become great players when playing for better sides is ridiculous. It was the complete failure of our management / scouting team that he ever bought and heads rightly rolled.

I think you're being overly harsh. I'm rather certain he was the player Comolli referred to as 'weak' mentality wise. The moment the going got tough - and we were struggling from the get go last year, he never recovered. He needs to be in a team with no pressure (i.e. A Villa etc) where a few poor games won't get him blasted by his own fan base etc. He's not built for a top team - not because of his talent. I remember him playing quite a few great balls last year that should have resulted in goals .... But it's rather pointless. Either way, we both agree a) he isn't good enough for us and b) he was a terrible purchase.
