Stewart Downing will have to fight for shirt says Brendan Rodgers.

Brendan Rodgers has questioned whether Stewart Downing has the necessary "fight" for a Liverpool team that he believes can qualify for the Champions League.
The England international has been a major disappointment at Anfield since his £20m arrival from Aston Villa 14 months ago and his fortunes have deteriorated since Rodgers replaced Kenny Dalglish as manager. Downing has seen 17-year-old Raheem Sterling and summer signing Fabio Borini preferred ahead of him this season, and Rodgers has suggested the 28-year-old may have to reinvent himself as a left-back to enhance his prospects at Liverpool.
Rodgers did not disguise his frustration with Downing during the Europa League game against Young Boys in Berne last week. Now, after the winger again failed to impress in the Capital One Cup win over West Bromwich Albion in midweek, the Liverpool manager has suggested he may consider offers for Downing in January unless the player's commitment improves.
"Stewart is a good guy and a good lad who came here for an awful lot of money," said Rodgers, who is likely to be without Borini at Norwich Cityon Saturday due to an ankle injury. "It hasn't quite worked out for him as he would want it. The big challenge for him now is that commitment to the cause to fight, because he has the qualities. He has a wonderful left foot but what is important is that it is more than talent. Talent alone is not enough. You have to work hard, you have to fight for the shirt. We have seen that in a number of the young players and if you don't do that then longer-term you won't be here. It is as simple as that really."
The Liverpool manager's threat also applies to José Enrique, who made an encouraging start to his Anfield career after a £6m move from Newcastle United but has struggled since the turn of the year.
Rodgers added: "What is important is that you have good communication. I don't waste my time waiting until January to tell both players what I know now. So they know in relation to the demands of what we want and certainly what it is going to take for us to succeed and for them to fit into the dynamics of the group.
"We are coaches, not magicians. For me football players are no different to plumbers, joiners or bricklayers. They are self-employed and us as medics, coaches and managers are the tools that help them to be better. We will give them everything to help them to be better, but if they don't want to show that self-motivation, and if you haven't got that desire and hunger to succeed, then it can be very difficult for you. The communication I will keep private between Stewart and I, but he is under no illusions that he has to fight."
Liverpool have yet to win in the Premier League under Rodgers but, after a testing run of fixtures, the Northern Irishman denies the trip to Carrow Road represents a fresh start for his side. He also claimed that a top four finish is not beyond Liverpool providing they keep in touch with the leading pack until the transfer window reopens in January.
Rodgers said: "My job started the day I walked into the club. There is no doubt it was a difficult batch of fixtures to start with and our three home games were always going to be difficult. But there are 99 points to play for. I believe that 70-plus points will allow you to arrive in the top four. So that gives us 68 points that we need over the remaining games. We can maybe have 10 games with problems.
"There's absolutely no doubt it's going to be a monumental achievement for that [Champions League qualification] to happen but in my working life my mentality – and I'm selling that to the players– is that it is what we have to work towards. You aim to win the league and if you can't do that then you aim to finish as high as you possibly can. Get through to January and we will get better over the second half of the season as well."
Rodgers, who may have Daniel Agger available at Norwich despite the defender being carried off with a knee injury against Manchester United on Sunday, has confirmed Liverpool are looking to extend Suso's contract. The Spanish midfielder is the final year of his deal.

Wouldn't have thought there's much chance Downing & Enrique will be here much longer.

10m for the pair of them might get us that striker we need.

I don't think many of us will disagree with Rodgers' statement. I was quite pleased when we signed Downing because his performances for Villa seemed to be pretty good. But since he has been on our books he hasn't done what he gets paid for and what we paid £20 million to get. He seldom takes on his man but lays the ball off as soon as he gets it. He rarely gets near enough to the goal to shoot and has scored very few goals.

It's up to Rodgers to decide whether a public statement of that nature is the right way to express himself rather than telling Downing in private. Maybe he has tried this and it hasn't worked.

I've still no idea yet if Rodgers is the man to take us forward and rebuild like we require , but at least he seems to recognise how poor last seasons signings were and that long term they won't be good enough .

It's mind-boggling how all last summer's signings have lived up to the fear everyone had about them before and not been able to cope with the pressures and demands here .

Pipe dreams for 4th and is it good talking about players in the open?

Don't think it's a pipe dream, and certainly think its too early to dismiss or chances.

We've 3 points less off vs the same fixtures last year - so its about getting some results flowing against the teams like Norwich that have been our problem in recent years.

Talking about Downing openly is hardly going to make him have less impact - and a public kick up the arse is warranted in his case.

I would think 4th is not feasible but then I shall be ecstatic to be proven wrong.
A public slap would give them confidence when a private one cannot? Would be interesting if it works.

Might just simply be sending signals that both players are now up for sale, so clubs can take their availability into account when planning for purchases in the January window.

As StevieM said - it's hardly likely to do much harm to Downing anyway. He doesn't have too many lower levels to sink to.

This is the most interesting piece of the article, so he can sign on a free for another club in Jan? Fucking hell, we really have to wrap this one up quickly

Come on Y1 - we've always been slow starters in the league. Things aren't decided by the end of sept, and if we don't dream or, more importantly, strive to achieve more than thought possible, we'll continue to descend in to mediocrity.

The team needs to believe, because that belief that it can achieve will be key in realizing the individual skills and combining as an effective unit.

United are so successful partly because Ferguson has it drummed in to them that they can overcome anything and beat anyone.

I'd say Downing's been having the gentle word in the ear since Rodgers first met him - and it's had no effect.

Its certainly interesting, I can see why the club were holding out though. No point in handing out contracts to all the youngsters before Rodgers has seen them, he may have bombed all of them out & we'd be stuck with an inflated under 19s wage bill as well as an inflated first team bill.

We need to get him signed up now though.

As for downing, it confirms the lad just doesn't have the mentality to step up at a big club. I have doubts whether he has the attributes to truly succeed but he should be performing better than he has been. It's like he has a few set things to do when he's in the final third & that's it, you can tell as soon as he gets the ball by what position he is in what he's gonna do, so the opposition obv know too.

I'm glad Rodgers is prepared to ship him & Enrique out, at the moment I'd take a quality left back for both of them. Move Johnson back to the right & when Lucas is back & Allen further up we'll be a much better side playing further up the pitch, which should create more chances & reduce the defensive mistakes.

Yup hope in the heart, dreams tossed, end of storm stuff is good. That is all we have at the moment. Golden sky. Sweet song. Let it be.

We'd still need some fucker to put the chances away though!

I fully approve of this message

liverpool way or not, this is a great motivator and who knows, maybe stewie will turn it around (LOL)

I take you rpoint but neither of those lads are callow young players, Downing has been almost unremittingly shat IMO, even ignoring the ridiculous price tag, a crisis of confidence shouldnt last for 14 months and he is clearly not busting a gut trying to get in. I didnt want him bought was gutted we did just that but at the same time i never hoped he would prove all the doubters soooo right and more.

Enrique is a different proposition as he has shown a lot of quality at times but he is game is way off and he hasnt got it back for a while, luckily he didnt cost 20M but still... i would give him till the end of the season to turn it round.

Downing can fuck off an a free for all i care.

Big fucking ditto - we were looking to loan him so hopefully opinions have changed and his head hasn't been turned I'm sure there would be no shortage of takers for him

The problem with Downing as I see it is that he thinks he's "arrived" and he therefore thinks he no longer has to try. It's a big problem for some players, they switch off once they move to the biggest club that they ever will do. Let's hope that some of the young uns coming through don't get the "made it" bug

I have to disagree actually, I think he looked overwhelmed in some ways last season, and played within himself.

The main problem is that he's just not that good in the first place.
