Probably lazy journalism but not beyond the realms of possibility.

In demand: Jack Butland is wanted by both Mersey clubs
Mersey rivals Liverpool and Everton are ready for a transfer tug-of-war for Stoke keeper Jack Butland, writes Steve Bates in the Sunday People.
Both Merseyside clubs have identified the 22-year-old England star as the keeper they want - even though the youngster could cost up to a staggering £17million next summer.
That's the kind of valuation Stoke are believed ready to slap on Butland who is being tipped for the very top after several outstanding early season performances for Mark Hughes' stars.
Anfield and Goodison scouts have been watching Butland regularly - and it's thought both clubs are ready to bid for the six foot five inch Bristol-born star.

Red: Jurgen Klopp sees Butland as a replacement for Simon Mignolet

Butland cost Stoke a reported £3.5million when he joined from Birmingham in 2013.
And he's held in such high esteem at the Britannia Stadium Hughes allowed Asmir Begovic to join Chelsea last summer and promoted Butland.
And since bursting into the first team and becoming England number two to Joe Hart this season, his value has soared
Everton boss Roberto Martinez sees Butland as the long-term replacement for current number one Tim Howard who will be 37 next March.
And although the fee would be a massive outlay for a young inexperienced goalkeeper Everton are ready to splash the cash with many coaches in the game believing Butland is going to be a major star.

Blue: Roberto Martinez wants Butland to replace Tim Howard

With Chelsea set to return for Everton's £35million-rated England defender John Stones in the summer and Premier League club's set to profit from the new £5.5billion TV deal which kicks in next season, the Toffees could easily afford to spend big on Butland.
So too could Liverpool who are expected to hand new boss Jurgen Klopp funds to re-shape the squad in the
summer.
Some critics view current Kop keeper Simon Mignolet as a weak link and the Belgian star - signed from Sunderland for £9million two years ago - was at fault for Bordeaux's goal in Liverpool's 2-1 Europa League win in midweek.
But Stoke have ambition themselves and although they don't have the pedigree of the Mersey rivals Potters boss Hughes will fight hard to keep Butland on board.

I cant imagine Everton spending £17m on a keeper regardless of what they get for Stones. On the other hand Utd will need a new keeper when DeGea leaves next summer so there might be competition.

I like him. He might even be better than any of the young German keepers we've been linked with so far, other than Ter Stegen.

Yep, very good young GK.
Stoke bought him for 3,3 mill and loaned him out. Seeing as we've pissed away upteenth millions since 2013 its a bit shite that we didnt take that chance.

Buying him for 17 mill now used to be our style. Think Klopp could go for a just as talented young German GK instead for half the price.

We were linked to Butland before he went to Stoke IIRC. What would we fetch for Mingolet? He'd be decent for a mid table club or a team battling relegation as he's a good shot stopper.

6-8 mill I'd reckon.

Yeah I can't see Butland costing 34 million.

David De Gea might not even cost Madrid that much.

He is young, english, stoke dont need to sell and the big tv deal kicks in next summer

Stoke might not need to sell, but no club like Stoke has ever managed to keep a player who wants to go to a bigger, richer club, their record transfer fee received is 8m for Begovic, the most money ever paid for a goalkeeper in the Premiership is 17.5m.

So, yeah. 34m is fucking absurd.

English players going to bigger clubs will only move for silly money.

everton rejected £40 million for stones.
