Burnley vs Liverpool Match Thread

One more game in this period then the whole squad can relax and we can get back to a more 'normal' level of strategic rotation. Big game on Friday against Everton but looks like we'll put the big guns out which will be nice to see. Hope for lots of injuries in Utd vs Everton this afternoon.

Needed that win as Everton will undoubtedly roll over.

Hughes on a tight rope after that loss. Would not be surprised to see him go. Big win for Newcastle, up into 13th.

I know he’s only a young lad and might be really unfair, but still..
Solanke reminds me of Benteke for LFC. Completely unsuited. It would really make sense to bring in a new second choice striker (fighting to be first choice), someone like that Ajax lad @khl loves.
Someone with skill and mindset for the quick short pass footy we play.

Don't know about that - when our passing game is not going well - we put in crosses - is not Solanke supposed to be that plan B type striker ? - also I have noticed that Klopp plays him when he knows that the opposition with park a major bus - and I think his plan is use a more physical striker up front than rely on our fab four little ones.

This really felt like a win for good guys against the evil burnley . Super satisying to see them undone so late on , muhahahahahahahahahhahahah

I think klopp is trying to get him to play like Firmino (without the quality obv), in working the defenders & trying to create the space for others in the process.

Thing is though, Ings is that player already, & has goalscoring as well, so he should be doing that job.

Massive result which will give a lot of confidence to the whole squad. We didn't play especially well but we delivered in the key moments.

Great stuff.

Here's a rare sentence: come on Everton, Rooney and Fat Sam!

No Hendo.

No Salah.

No Mane.

Probably no Coutinho.

That forward line on Friday is gonna look similar to today & probably play as poorly too.

Midfield will almost certainly be the same too.

Touch circumstances to try and judge any forwards on - awful conditions against a very negative Burnley side who are very well drilled and don't give much away.

Yeah, and Solanke loses the ball A LOT when holding up the ball.
Again, it’s probably unfair on him because players around him today were really static, and he had loads of Burnley players on him the moment he received the ball.
But that again is the reason I find his style unsuited to us.

If Sturridge goes to Southampton this week, there's no way we can let Ings go out on loan too. I'm all for giving young talent a chance, but as of right now Solanke is nowhere near ready is he?

On another note, Pope has been a very good keeper so far this season. Some great saves already in the bag. Maybe it is a Burnley thing as Heaton pre injury has looked great for many years now. His save from Ox was very good and sharp.

His first few games the thing I liked most about him was how well he held the ball up & how he used his strength to do so. That seems to have deserted him.

Keepers often look better at lower placed sides. More shots to defend, & distribution isn't nearly as important.

Very hard to judge how a keeper will step up to another side imo.

Spurs have two games in a couple of days away v a resurgent Swansea will be tough and West ham have slightly improved under Moyes, hoping they will drop a few points.
Chelsea play arsenal so will defo be some lost points there, I'd hope for an arsenal win there as they will struggle again and allows us to get closer to 2nd

Not the prettiest performance but stepped up when it counts and got the points while resting several players. Massively happy with this win.

A few thoughts:
1) TAA was below average defensively I thought - He's got to improve, even if he won't be playing there in the future.
2) Gomez was caught ball watching - not as bad as Arsenal, but still. He's young, and will improve but frustrating.
3) Why was Mane taken off? Great goal - and I hope he's returning to form.
4) OxCh played well I think. He's still not imposing himself on the game but some really nice runs etc - He's improving a lot.
5) Solanke - he can do much more. Not sure why but it seems Klopp is pushing him away from his comfort zone (leading the line) and playing more like Bobby.
6) Gini missing that chance near the end before Burnley scored was so frustrating. I guess I can blame the weather but he'd have scored that if that was at home.
7) Will someone PLEASE tell Klopp that Firmino is better in the middle flanked by two players than on the flank himself?

Mane was sulking for the entire match the drama queen.

Great goal though.
I don't think he's simply sulking.

He's not playing in his favoured position cos salah is tearing it up there, & he's coming back from a muscle injury which has to be treated very carefully & means he can't use that explosive pace as much, his muscle reactions are slower & he's forced to play a little within himself.

It's hardly surprising we're not seeing the best of him.

Yes, yes that’s all very true, although he could be just sulking.

Agree with most of the analysis of how bad we were in parts and individual displays. Thought Klopp's subs were shit. But I'll take that three points no matter what. All those changes I really couldn't see anything other than a draw at best, but to win there in the last minute after all those flaws was fantastic.

Great stuff.

Hasn't Mane got the same amount of goals now as he did this time last season?

It's just Frim stepped up and overtook him and Salah is taking the piss. Don't worry about Mane.

Fear not, i'm not trying to suggest we should be looking at him. But from Burnley's perspective, they have spent years as tough opposition to score against, much down to a great keeper. He gets injured 3 games into the season and their backup is absolutely smashing it.
