Broughton was always going to leave.

Hopefully the new owners will do us proud and we can look back on the job he did for us with gratitude and respect.

NESV may well have to replace Boughton and others on the board but I'm sure they will pick the right people for the job, not their sons to represent them.

All three deserve credit as all three were involved in this battle to essentially keep the club from going down the toilet. They deserve massive credit for that, I really believe they picked the best offer on the table. It's not their fault if a multi gazillionaire doesn't want to buy the club as it seems they contacted a few.

With a bit of luck Broughton will be the only one to go. I reckon that Purslow and Ayre will want to stay and that their performance should have impressed NESV more than enough to keep them on.

Broughton has indeed been very impressive, and everything he has said has been just *right*

Well done in ridding us of Hicks and Gillette; I hope you have delivered us great owners

What a fucking dude Broughton is. He's just super cool and a fucking top cold hearted motherfucker.
I love that against a tide of hatred from (some) fans and apparant loyalty to the owners he has been working like a sneaky fucking demon to oust them and perform the coup to end all coups.

He is quite literally the smartest guy in the room.

LOVE YOU BOSS. x

I doff my cap in their general direction. Simply amazing management and they knew their jobs in what could prove to be a key moment in our history. Broughton will move on, as he will have other fights to win, i sincerely hope Purselow and Ayre stay on as they have proved their loyalty to the club, not the owners.

All three have proved their mettle in the last few weeks. We're looking in rude health should NESV's track record with the Red Sox mean anything.

Great management team, super new owners and, er....Roy Hodgson as manager.

Credit to these guys. The appointments of Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre in Jun 2009 have got to be one of the few, if any positives of G&H's 'legacy'.

Heh, there has been this horrible feeling of impotency throughout much of this affair, so in the last week or two it was nice feeling that we had a few genuine heavy-weights on-board fighting our corner.

Indeed, garnished nicely by the feeling that Hicks and Gillett look to have completely underestimated whom they were up against.

Are you (finally) falling on your sword Brendan?

Well done board, you did us proud - even if I'm still suspicious of NESV.

I hope G&H never recover from this big hit.144M?

They got kicked in the nuts followed by a left hook to the jaw and knocked the fuck out!

Liverpool FC are in good hands with new chairman Tom Werner, says departing Martin Broughton

LIVERPOOL’S departing chairman Martin Broughton feels he is leaving the club in good hands as he prepares to hand over to New England Sports Ventures’ Tom Werner.

Broughton effectively signed off at last weekend’s match against West Ham, but his tenure does not officially end until Tuesday after which time the NESV chairman will take over.

Having endured some “difficultâ€, “complicated†and “uncomfortable†times during his seven-month stint Broughton is happy to be able to step aside confident Liverpool’s new owners will take the club forward.

“They are really getting down to it in a very professional way,†he said.

“I have been impressed with that. It’s the sort of thing I expected from them.

“They are taking their time, doing it carefully, thinking it through, not being rushed. They’re the right people.â€

Broughton admits his short tenure has not been the smoothest of rides but is satisfied with the conclusion, having been appointed in April to find new owners to replace the maligned Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

“There have been times when it hasn’t been so much fun, but when I look back, I’m pleased I did it and I have enjoyed it,†he said.

“It was more difficult (a challenge than expected). I thought there would be a few more bidders at an earlier stage.

“It took a little bit longer, and certainly in the end it turned out to be rather more complicated than I predicted.

“I think the low point was pretty early on, when we had a situation with unpopular owners, the manager (Rafael Benitez) going – so no manager – stories about Stevie (Gerrard) wanting to go, stories about Fernando (Torres) wanting to go.

“That looked a pretty uncomfortable position at the time.

“But the highlight is getting the deal done with the right people, no question; actually delivering what we promised – the right owners.

“I am very proud of it. It has been great to come in and deliver on a promise.â€

Broughton, a Chelsea fan, paid tribute to the club’s supporters and stressed his belief that things were now moving in the right direction.

“This is a fantastic club with terrific supporters,†he added.

“It’s been an emotional time for them, it’s been a difficult time – I’ve understood that – but they’ve kept the faith, and they need to keep the faith now.

“The team’s going to come good from here.â€

Werner’s appointment was no real surprise, considering his close working relationship with NESV principal owner John Henry.

“It is a great honour to be taking over from Martin as chairman of this great club,†he said.

“We have a tremendous foundation to build on for this season and the long-term.

“Our goal is to work tirelessly for our supporters and deliver the best conditions for a winning team and silverware in the trophy room.â€

Henry backed Werner to help steer the club towards more profitable times after their recent decline on the pitch.

“I am delighted that Tom has agreed to take over as chairman,†said Henry.

“It is a crucial role as we move forward and no-one is better placed than Tom to take up the reins and help provide leadership and vision in the coming years.

“It has been a pleasure for us to work with Martin. He was appointed in difficult circumstances and faced challenging times yet he always focused on doing what was in the bestlong-term interests of the club.

“We wish him well in all that he does in the future.â€

Top man and I wish we could have kept him. All the best in the future, Martin.

I'm always a little disappointed when people post articles without bold around the bits that are important. Binny has us spoiled.

Martin Broughton, the man who chaired Liverpool Football Club during its dramatic takeover discussions earlier this year, was back at the football club he knows best over the weekend – Chelsea. Attending an annual fundraising lunch, the lifelong Blues fan was asked whether it felt odd rescuing Liverpool, one of his club’s fiercest rivals, from financial meltdown.

Broughton sidestepped the question by turning the spotlight on a couple of Liverpool’s other advisers. Corporate lawyer Nigel Boardman, is a massive Arsenal fan, and the barrister used in the High Court, Lord Grabiner, supports Spurs.

A speaker at the lunch was Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, a lawyer from Skadden Arps, who joked that Chelsea were indeed interested in buying the site at Earls Court from property firm Capital & Counties.

But he said it wouldn’t lead to a move away from Stamford Bridge for the Blues. Owner Roman Abramovich just wanted the site to put his yachts in during the winter.

As for Manchester City, he quipped, can you believe they think it is possible to buy the Premiership??The irony did not go unnoticed.
