Brendan's press-conference

Liverpool's interest is over after Fenway Sports Group refused to pay above their valuation of the 25-year-old. The Anfield club were close to a £30m deal at the weekend only for an improved package from Spurs to prompt the owners to withdraw.

Rodgers said: "We identify the targets and then try and get the deal done financially. That's how it was. The club pushed as hard as they felt they could financially but it wasn't to be. "It's the owners' money and they will always have the final say because it's they who run the club. What they have taken on here is a huge job. You have seen over the last few years they will finance a project we are trying to develop and what we have to make sure of is we get the right players and the value and worth of the player is right. It's disappointing because this was a player who would have been perfect for us."

The Liverpool manager added: "It wasn't a football reason [why the deal collapsed] and I don't really want to go into it. That's for us as a club really. The bottom line is he hasn't come here for whatever reason and we move on."

Rodgers said only a week ago that Champions League qualification was a realistic demand of Liverpool but, should Spurs strengthen with Willian and others, he concedes the task will become even more complicated.

"The challenge is the same. This week hasn't changed it. What it has done is reinforced the clubs that are already in there," he said.

"Chelsea have won the Champions League and spent millions upon millions, Tottenham could spend up to 90-odd million and they are outside the Champions League. For us it is a huge, huge challenge, there's no doubt about that. But I don't want to be defeatist. We can't accept that. There's no doubt quality will cost you money. We just have to try to ensure we can get quality through the door and that will give us a chance for fourth. But make no mistake about it, it's a big ask and a big challenge."

Yep, and he's stating pretty clearly that we need to spend some money these next 11 days or the challenge for 4th will be difficult.
Thats our goal according to Henry.

We have no real prospect of fourth.

We've not brought an home in to improve last year's first team, and that was only good enough for 7th. Then you have Spurs in 5th spending over £100m and Arsenal likely to start spending with CL football to offer.

There's no talk on the stadium either.

FSG need to put their money where their mouth is. Talk is cheap.

Is right.

Saw a quote from someone earlier, "there's a fine line between overspending and being overly cautious' and that sums it up to a tee.

Signings of Coutinho and Sturridge show that you dont need to go spending crazy money to get good players.

Tick tock...

We are in a very similar situation to Arsenal right now. Whomever between the two of us spends smarter and better over the next week or so will finish higher on the table.

Only difference is that Arsenal need a bigger squad, whereas we need to improve the first team

"It's something that we're looking at, certainly, a player to come in in that position. It's to strengthen the squad but also to allow some of our younger players to develop.

"For us to maximise Andre Wisdom and his talent, I need to get him some games.

"The idea is to get him out on loan; but I can only do that if we bring in someone with a bit more experience to come in and support the group. It's two-fold really. It's certainly a position we're looking at."

The manager was also quizzed at his pre-match press conference about speculation linking the Reds with a move for sought-after Anzhi Makhachkala midfielder Willian, who is a reported target of Tottenham Hotspur.

He responded: "Over the course of the summer, we have been very ambitious in our attempts to try to get in players to improve the team.

"Some might say too ambitious but this is Liverpool Football Club - we are trying to get the best players that we possibly can. If we can't get them in, we just have to move on.

"We've got 11 days to go, we have to do everything we possibly can.

"It hasn't changed; if you're going to climb the league, you have to have quality and you have to get the best players you possibly can into your club to help you climb. That's our aim.

"Of course if you don't get the player you want, there's always that initial disappointment but you can't dwell on it. There's still a chunk of the window left.

"We've done some business early on in the window, which was very good. Now if we can finish off in these remaining days and get some players in that can help us, it would end a very good window for us."

The Northern Irishman expanded on his desire to further Wisdom's development by allowing the 20-year-old to gain experience with a potential loan switch.

"I just think the position that he plays, it's preferable if you have that wee bit of experience," said Rodgers.

"We introduced him into the team last season at right-back and he did very well as a young player stepping in. He was excellent every time he played.

"He played centre-half mostly throughout pre-season and I think that will be his No.1 position. But in order to do that, especially at a big club, that wee bit of experience comes in.

"Unless you are in the team, which obviously he isn't, I look at it and it might be beneficial for him to get games. But it's all about timing - it has to be at the right time.

"At the minute he is very much a part of the squad, but the idea of bringing someone else now with Seba injured would release him to go and get the experience we think would improve him as a player."

Wisdom loan to Swansea, we buy Williams.

Makes sense, he'd need to loan a cb to a team that plays it from the back & we've been heavily linked with Williams.

Is wrong but your final sentence is right.

Coutinho and Sturridge only played half a season for us and our better half was when they played. We have them for the start of this season so to say this team is only good enough for 7th is wrong. We've got a good team, just because we haven't spent over £100m does not necessarily mean we'll not get fourth. So Arsenal can offer CL, does that mean they're going to win it or even win anything?

I'm glad we didn't over spend on Willian but would like to see us bring in another player.

I still think even without a player coming with Suarez staying we'll get 3rd.

I really really like how Rodgers handles these things.

Maybe he'll get fed up over time and show it, but for now he's the utmost professional. Speaks well, isn't controversial, is always complimentary, and focuses on the positives.

He's got some faults Rogers, but the way he's handled this (difficult) summer has been extremely impressive.

every summer is difficult for us , this is his second so he knew what to expect .

Agreed. I also really like FSG's handling of things too. Maybe Willian could have made the difference for us, but spending +30m on someone like that is a risk that we cannot afford at the moment in my opinion, and the decision was correct.

Do you have to put negative spin on everything? He spent money last Summer, and in January, I don't think that's necessarily prepared him for a Summer of putting up with the Suarez fiasco and missing out on players.

I like it that he is honest over what has happened and am excited that we are still chasing two targets.

Me too, I'm also glad that FSG decided over 27M was too much and refused to up the offer, they got burnt with Carroll.... Anyway loads of newspapers have intimated that he isn't worth 30M it's just that he was bought buy an oil magnate for that money only 6 months back...

I'm also pleased that we still seem to be hopeful of getting someone in... I just don't want to know who it fucking is until we've done it!

Ashley Williams is shite mate. Would be gutted if we signed him.

I'm not saying I agree. I've honestly not seen enough of him or Swansea to judge, though a couple of mates who have say he's nowhere near our standard.

I can see it happening though, simply cos we've been linked with him ever since Rodgers came.

Whilst it may be lazy reporting, we don't get linked with other Swansea players so there may be something in it.

Correct. Nowhere near good enough. He was at fault for United's first goal last weekend because he chickened out of a headaer and was part of the defensive mess for the second too.

I like it too but at the same time... there does seem to be a fair amount of whinge and miff in between the lines... Personally I reckon we could get a player better and for less money. I'd never heard of the Willian lad anyway so...no difference to me...

This Arsenal hover over Benzema is intriguing and we want to watch we don't get burned....we want to make sure that Real know Suarez's price as well.... from the off... so late in the window? after spending 90M on Bale!!.... 65M or fuck right off...

Hopefully it will put them off and in doing so could also have the nice knock on effect of stunting Arsenal by preventing them selling there only remaining recognised no.9 in Benzema.

Yes, if karma really exists, Brendan has probably earned a few "normal" routine summer transfer seasons down the line. He's been thrown into the fire from the word "go", hasn't he? First having to make a big decision on a 35-million flop (as well as a few slightly less expensive flops with fat contracts), then surviving (as it seems) the explosive situation of our only world class player pushing hard to force a move to a domestic rival. Oh, and the owners undercut his signings at the last minute last year and probably refused to make enough funds available for his top target this year. Oh, and they also made him star in the fucking reality show from his very first day on the job. All the while, he needed to build for the long term and had to placate the fan base that's at times stuck in the glory days, deal with the the press looking for any excuse to vilify our best player (who wasn't exactly helping matters) and fend off digs and "helpful" suggestions from the old foxes like Fergie and Moyes who would like nothing more than to see him and LFC crash and burn. And that's his first big job. Yeah, I'd say he did good so far.

I really hate this defeatist attitude where people think that because Spurs have spent a lot then they are virtually guaranteed a Top 4 CL slot. Spending big does not guarantee anything ..... as we have found out in the few seasons under Hodge & Kenny. They could be great they could be absolute shite (as they were against Palace), they could gel immediately or they might never gel - and they will have to sideline some of their best performers from last season (inc. the sale of Bale) to include the better players they have bought, with no guarantee they will be an improvement, in fact in Bale's case it's almost guaranteed to be a big loss.

You talk about Arsenal as a yardstick - when they have spent fuck all ! Yes they probably will but you have no idea if they will, or who they will buy so it's pretty pathetic to start using them as something we should aspire to in the transfer market 🙄

As for us not competing, last season we were one of the top teams over the second half of the season, if we had not started the season with 2 / 15 points then we would have been in the mix, even 10/15 would have seen us just 3 points behind Spurs and a maximum of 4 behind Arsenal (since one of those defeats was at home to Arsenal then we could even possibly have reversed those positions). We are a far better side than last season, improvement doesn't just come from spending huge sums of money, as you seem to surmise, it comes from better coaching, better teamwork and understanding, and that takes time to build. On that score though it looks like (judging from the end of last season and the start to this) that we are the team that has improved the most out of the top seven.

Then there is your comment on FSG putting their money where they mouth is .... I think you need to take a look at the average spend over the past few years, only City & Chelsea are above us and there is no doubt we have been trying to spend this year (we have indeed already got 4 very good players already in, or do they not count because they didn't cost 20-30m each) ? You can't blame FSG for not paying insane money just because Spurs/Chelsea/City are willing to pay well above what a player is worth.

Stadium - yes there is talk, it seems to be progressing slowly but surely.

From your post one would wonder if you have actually been in hibernation the past 2-3 years.

negative spin or just being realistic? . i mean in this case when was the last time we had a decent summer transfer window ? we seem to be much better at the january ones (bar carroll but we got suarez that same day) . Anyway i was slightly taking the piss , i actually don't give that much of a fuck .
