Brendan: Coutinho is this team's brain

Now that Suarez is not here, he is my favorite current LFC player. (Although Raheem pushes him close). I'll be strict to him though. Last year was a bit of a half-step back/half-step forward kind of year. Next year he should take a big step forward towards becoming a Premiership superstar.

Can anyone explain why he goes missing quite frequently (brilliant as he is the rest of the time)

How can he did this

Well from where I was sitting him and Totti looked looked like the only two really good players.

It was an education for me watching from the stand as opposed to on tv. He moved very cleverly to make sure he was able to receive the ball very quickly when Roma lost it. It was also astonishing to see, from behind the goal, how he ran with the ball and sent players the wrong way. Yes his shooting is still shit but he could be an amazing.

I don't think he does go missing as such TBH. For me the problem is more to do with others around him sometimes not moving or thinking as quickly as he does, so that his passes don't get the reward they deserve. Maybe that discourages him, but I haven't noticed him doing less running as a result.

He's just 22.

In Coutinho, Sterling, Henderson, Markovic, Ibe, Origi...we have a clutch of the world's best young future stars in the making. With normal improvement any of them should just get better and better.

Im really looking forward to seeing him this year.
He is going to be great. A full year behind him in the premiership, a full summer of rest, and being called out by Mr Rodgers as 'The Man'
This could and should be his David Silva year.

His shooting is fucking wank though.
I hope he gets some focus training on it.
Then sit him in the middle and give him the fucking ball.

Oh I forgot to say, he also works his socks off and tackles back all the time, something most number 10s cant be arsed doing so he automatically gets time from me over the likes of Garcia who in those games when he went missing did fuck all. Coutinho will still work hard and try to win the ball back.

I think his workrate though is often dependent on how well he's playing otherwise. When he's on top of his game, he seems to be put extra effort on the defensive side of things.

That's the sort of inconsistency he needs to wipe out - and generally become more of an arrogant cunt.

You leave Garcia out of this. Blasphemous bastard.

If Coutinho sorts his shooting out he will be a world beater, one of the worlds best.

If we keep possession as we should or play on the fast counter he is instrumental to it all, there is no one, including Lallana, who has his vision or eye for a pass in our squad.

All young players(under 11) should be told to watch him, his control, technique is quality. The way he knows what is happening because he keeps his head, love it.

It's like Germany when Lahm was still a youngster. Die Mannschaft Mark II. We must be patient with this project.

Kind of worrying that statement about him being the 'Brains' of our team. What happens if he is injured or Brendan does not play him like he did in quite a few games last season ?

Does that mean Liverpool don't have a "Brain" ? - Oh Shit.

Hhhhhmmmmm.

No brain you say..... reminds me of someone.... It's on the tip of my tongue.....

Coutinho gave an interview to a Portuguese radio station. Transcript of some of the questions and his responses below courtesy @LFC_360 on twitter. Some interesting bits in there especially him playing in an Allen type role.

COUTNHO: I WILL GIVE OPPONENTS NO PEACE.

Full excerpts from an amazingly insightful and emotional interview of our little magician, on Rádio Tupi today.

Presenter welcomed Phil Coutinho to the show addressing him as the " little darling of Vasco da Gama" (his former Rio-based club).

Q: Last time you were on this show you were in Milan, you mentioned homesickness...

Coutinho: Liverpool is home. I like a quiet life.

Presenter interrupts: Not your comrades, then?

Coutinho: I am no one to comment. I can only speak for myself. Family and Football is all.

Q: Tell me of life at 'home' in Inglaterra (England).

Coutinho: It's a haven. Fans are kind. I have good friends here. My family is happy.

Coutinho: My family is tight. We sit together after every game and see my videos, they often notice things I miss - they help me to improve.

Bellos: Speaking of improvement, I see you're not that mild-mannered boy on the pitch anymore?

Coutinho: I owe thanks to Brendaõ (Brendan Rodgers) for that.

Coutinho: After Wigan away, where I didn't stop fighting - Brendan called me to office and told me he's sure I can be a 'volanté' or a no. 8.

Bellos (interrupts): But, that isn't your natural game?

Coutinho: A number 8 role? Why not? I'm only a boy. Brendan showed me I can learn.

Coutinho: Brendaõ said before Everton at Anfield, "do you have the fire?" Before Arsenal he told me to not give them peace. I gave no peace.

Bellos: Your build, is it suited?

Coutinho: It will be. I'm working closely with mi amigo Pedro Philippou (trainer) and (Ryland) Morgans.

Coutinho: I look at my teammates too. I work with Joe (Allen) sometimes to see how he uses his body to protect the ball. He's amazing at it.

Bellos: What about theory?

Coutinho: DVDs.

Brendaõ has given me DVDs of Valderrama, Valeron, Rui Costa, Francescoli to study for holidays.

Bellos (laughs): No Brazilian to study on your DVDs roster?

Coutinho: No. I've been doing that since I was 9. My uncle's VCR was my Bible.

Presenter (interrupts): Exclusion from Seleção? How..

Coutinho: Anger. Not because I'm selfish, but because I could have offered something.

Bellos: What now?

Coutinho: I'm going to use this anger and push myself to my limits. I saw how Luisito (Suárez) was a maniac in training.

Coutinho: At this point, my body and mind feel like clay. I will mold it the way I envision, and I will use my fire to make them harder.

Coutinho labels the goals 'Luisito' Suárez used to pull in traning as "loco" and "tongue-biting". You won't find a better translation, haha!

That's all folks. He is asked to speculate about his position under Dunga and how he sees the Seleção moving on. Nothing pertinent.

For those who are kosher with their Portuguese, they can catch a repeat on Rádio Tupi, Rio De Janeiro

Great interview. Thanks for posting.

I love the little Brazilian. Great attitude. He will need to take the next step for us to succeed. Has all the talent.

Volanté? A defensive midfielder? Hmmmm. That's a weird one from Brendaõ.

I suppose maybe Rodgers referred to just "midfielder", as in this definition from Wiki:

The Midfielder position in association football (volante means defensive midfielder in Brazil but midfielder elsewhere in Latin America)

I suppose the DVDs on Valderrama, Valeron, Rui Costa and Francescoli would be more agreeable to that definition than the narrower one.

Great interview. He was absoolutly fantastic today. That assist to Sturridge was unreal.
Think and hope that he'll have a fantastic season.

Didn't get worn down with the travel and gametime in Brazil either.

He should be among the freshest of the main players.

Until guys start kicking him for embarrassing them. Same will happen to Sterling - you could see the latter actually getting roughed up more and more as the pre-season game against Dortmund progressed - their subs started taking a harder line on Sterling when they came on. We need the likes of Markovic and Ibe/Suso/Teixeira to step up quickly to give Coutinho and Sterling their rest now and then. The good thing is that at least this season we have these guys on the bench, instead of Victor Fucking Moses.
