Brendan can rejoice ... Lucas is leaving

Good luck, and he was useful at times. But I think he pretty much personifies our most recent slump to mediocrity. It's no coincidence that his time at the club coincided with us falling down the table and barely any silverware. Lovely fella by all accounts, and a capable footballer, but he should've left a long time ago. YNWA.

Seen similar sentiments shared but United won League Titles all over the show with players like O'Shea and Fletcher becoming vital squad players...good solid pros without being blessed with spectacular ability.

So, basically, I think it's a bit harsh to pinpoint Lucas as being a reason for our decline.

If we want to discuss our decline properly and this is going back 12-15 years before Lucas joined, I'd say bad timing played a big part in it imo. Our dominance ended just before Sky started pumping money into the game so we were going through the Souness 'transitional' period and then David Moores didn't have the business acumen to run the Club so we started to fall behind the United's of the world. The fact that we were still sitting a 45k stadium over 20 years since the first talk of expansion / new stadium tells you everything about he we were run back then.

Lucas isnt the reason for our decline.

However his remaining here over so many years & so many managers as a stalwart is a clear indication of our decline.

I'm not saying he's the reason, but it's telling that as soon as he became an important figure in our midfield, we started to decline. We needed better but we never tried to improve on him.

I thought I'd be much happier at the news that Lucas is finally, finally gone. Perhaps it just hasn't sunk in, yet.
Or maybe I'm more concerned by the lack of transfer activity in positions where we desperately require improvement.

While Lucas's Liverpool career has been largely one of frustration and mediocrity, it isn't really fair to somehow blame him for how little success we had. While he may to some extent have come to personify just how far we were from being back at the top, he could never really be said to have had that much impact personally. He only twice ever made more than 30 appearances (never mind starts) in any league season, and was largely a back-up option for more talented and valuable players.

It's interesting to note, however, how his standing and level of affection increased over the years with the fans. Almost like a reward for all the diversity, mockery, booing and disdain that he suffered - quite correctly - in his first few seasons, when the "big, blonde attacking midfielder from Brazil" turned out to be......Lucas. HIs refusal to give in, and his obvious connection to the club and the city goes some way to answer why he went from mockery to almost hero status.

Not hero status like Gerrard, obviously. More like "comedy hero" or faithful canine sidekick. Part of the furniture.

It's not secret to anyone here, or among my friends and family, that I've always had a huge dislike for Lucas, so I've been largely immune to his increased stature and popularity. But that personal enmity isn't the whole story.

The simple fact is that he's always been fucking shit. He was sometimes less shit than other times. At his best he was almost mediocre. But overall, Lucas was fucking shit.

There have been a few players who were more fucking shit than Lucas. Nobody would say he was the worst player in Liverpool history. That would be absurd. There have been less decent, pleasant and hardworking Liverpool players too. More than a few, actually.

But if one was to factor in the actual length of time Lucas was employed by Liverpool FC - a frankly astonishing decade or so - it's certainly safe to say that he is without doubt the worst footballer to have had such a long career at Liverpool.

So I won't miss Lucas. I won't miss his BBQ skills or funny memes. I won't miss the desperate attempts to pretend he actually is a good player by numerous fans an experts. I won't miss his fouls, lack of pace, stupid mistakes or simple, grinding mediocrity.

Goodbye Lucas, you were fucking shit.

Model pro and all-round good bloke. Never complained, never caused any problems, well-liked by his teamates and wrongly accused of being the reason we never won stuff during his stay. Loads of teams have won titles with players of his ability. It's called a TEAM. Good luck to him.

Imagine if he had been the one to slip.

Team game indeed

I think Gerrard had built up quite a bit of positive equity by that time.

Hundreds of incredible, glorious, match-winning displays and goals. Lifting numerous trophies as Liverpool captain. Stuff like that.

If Lucas had been the one to slip, it would simply have been one more thing he fucked up because he was fucking shit.

Players of his ability making an occasional appearance to fill in is one thing. Players of his ability making frequent appearances for a whole decade is another.

He's totally coming back to succeed Gerrard as the U18s coach when Gerrard is bumped up. Or be the assistant manager when Gerrard takes over from Klopp.

He looks miserable:

I think even @manwithnoname is tearing up

When I first joined Liverpool 10 years ago, I had three main ambitions.

First, I wanted to win a place in the team, which I managed to do. Next, I hoped to prove myself worthy of the shirt, an aim that others will be better placed than me to decide whether or not it was achieved. Finally, I looked ahead to the future with a hope that if and when the time came to leave this wonderful club I would do so on the best possible terms.

That time has now come as I prepare for a new career at Lazio and while I am saddened that my days at Anfield are coming to an end, I can at least take comfort from the knowledge that my relationship with Liverpool and the supporters is stronger than ever.

This is one of the greatest clubs in the world and my intention had always been to spend the rest of my career here but the less I have been able to play, the more I have realised that I need to go to another club if I want to play as much as I possibly can.

When you love a club and a city as much as I love Liverpool that isn’t an easy decision to come to. The easiest thing for me to do would be to stay here for as long as I can even if I do not expect to play so often, but that would go against everything that I believe in as a footballer and as a competitor.
It is for that reason that I will be joining Lazio, which means my sadness at leaving Liverpool is accompanied by a real excitement that I will be representing one of Italy’s great clubs. Before I made my decision to take the opportunity to go to Italy, I discussed my situation with Jürgen Klopp and the way he handled it showed once again how respectful he is to his players. I am grateful to him and to all of the managers I worked under at Liverpool, especially the ones who showed faith in me when it would have been easy to do the opposite.

My priority now is to look ahead to a new chapter in my career in the belief that I can contribute to Lazio in the same way that I hope I have helped Liverpool. I have been blessed to live and work in this city, a place that I have come to realise is different to any other, and while living here I have been married and blessed with two wonderful children so whatever happens now we will always take Liverpool with us everywhere we go. I have also been fortunate to play with so many world-class teammates and shared their devotion to do everything that we could to help the club be as good as it can be.

Off the pitch, I was honoured to become a trustee of the LFC Foundation and got to see at first hand the work they do in the local community. When I celebrated being at Liverpool for a decade recently, it meant a lot to hear some of the children who the Foundation has helped describe me as a Scouser.

I might not have won as many trophies as I would have liked during my time here but to have people talk about me in that way means as much as any medal. The same goes for the video I was sent on Friday which showed the fans, many of them young, singing my name during the game at Wigan Athletic. To be the recipient of that support and that passion makes me so proud.

It is for those reasons – and many, many more – that Liverpool Football Club and its supporters will always have a special place in my heart. On top of that, the personality, humour, dignity and integrity of the people of this city will also stay with me forever.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to every single Liverpool fan. My family and myself will always be grateful for your support and for being part of this great club, which means we will also be sad now that the time has come for me to leave. All I can say now is that I hope more than anything else that the new season turns out to be a great one for my new club and my old club.

YNWA,
Lucas

Its annoying, because he needed to leave, but i feel sad he's gone now

He was a nice fella and did his best for us.

He was like our special needs mascot. Certainly more memorable than mighty cunting red

Your class shining through there Brendan.

Sad to see him go, he was limited but I still thought he gave value to our squad.

How the hell can that dickhead Moreno still not know English?
