Dissension is allowed JJ. I suppose Ratboy was probably referencing the calmness and organisation that Staam brought to Utd.

He's also wrong about his passing; Stam was very good on the ball, although it's arguable he wasn't exactly expansive and played it safe more often than, say, a Rio Ferdinand.

Still, if he can match what Stam achieved in his three years at United, I'll be more than happy

I'm not saying Stam misplaced every pass. I'm saying, and I stand by saying, that when I watched him he mangled too many of his more ambitious efforts to be described in the terms you use above. But there you go.

No real argument about the last bit. It was more a matter of the team's achievements as opposed to those of any individual player IMO, but if we can get into that kind of groove that'll be a very good thing wherever the balance lies.

I know he's injured but everyone's forgetting world's best CB and fashion designer

I don't know how many times I heard the argument "It's not like only one CD in the world could improve our defence" last summer when we didn't buy anyone else. As it might have been true enough, you can hardly argue that no other CD would make our defence this much better. Compliment to the club to keep the calm and wait for him in January. Obviously no other CD in the league is better than him now that Klavan has moved.

Carra and Neville seem to think he's now established himself as the best defender in our league, and potentially in the top tier in europe/the world, and I'd say that between them they know far more about defending than me, so I'll go with what they said.
One of the things that Carra mentioned is usually with great defenders, they can do a few few things brilliantly, but not everything, they normally have a weakness like pace, or being able to pass etc, they both agreed that he's very rare that he can do everything to a very high level.
I think the other huge positive from having him is that he brings up the level of the other defenders around him. So if we are planning to use Gomez long term in there, he'll learn massively from VVD and his level will go up.
I'd make him captain fairly sharpish, he's as close as we've got to a proper leader, one that can give bollockings out and people will listen. No one takes any notice of Henderson, and Gerrard was only a lead by example captain. I think if VVD started kicking off at you to raise your game, the players would listen, and he's normally a 8/10+ every week anyway.

He's almost perfect, the only criticism I can have of him is that he'll make two or three mistakes a season, but who doesn't?

thats absolute bollocks

Yes, it is, and taking the armband away from Henderson would risk damaging the form of a player we're going to need this season. Virgil's already doing what's he's doing just fine without it, like Carra did when Stevie was skipper.

Yeah, if it ain't broke...

You never know, giving VVD could lead him to change his style, or attitude, even subconsciously.

Whilst simultaneously pissing off Hendo.

Also, as Hendo said preseason, captain of Liverpool is 90% off the field stuff, he does tonnes of press work, interviews & schmoozing people, which VVD may not be arsed with at all.

Absolutely. People who say that clearly don't watch what he is doing. He is constantly organising, calling throw in takers, pulling players into position. This is one of the dogshit opinions that attaches itself to Hendo.

I knew he'd be the fucking don when he strolled up in that roll neck sweater when he joined....

Fucking James Bond Dutch bastard

The only concern was his ability to come back from injury but he looks to have to passed that with flying colours.

He's been amazing really. I wouldn't swap him for anyone.

Although it is worth noting he might not look as amazing if he had a back 5 of Ming, Gomez, Klavan and Moreno with him.

That's a very good point. Most teams these days no longer divide responsibilities between a team captain and a club captain (I believe a few of the more traditional clubs, such as Villa, still do), which used to be quite sensible: the club captain - usually a senior player who is no longer playing every week - helps the new players settle in, does most of the community work, etc, while the team captain concentrates on the games. Ideally, Hendo would make a great club captain, while VVD could be a very effective team captain. But as it is, I'd prefer to leave VVD to concentrate on playing.

Possibly, but then again one can already see with Gomez in particular how much Virgil's being there helps those around him.

Of course but there is no helping Moreno or Ming they are shite.

Gomez contrary to Oncy's view is a very good prospect and could become a great CB

Virgil (and btw Big Virg is also appropriate nomenclature) is definitely up there with the best in world football right now. Wouldn't trade for anyone. Transformative for our squad.

Virgil doesn't need a bit of fabric on his arm to be a captain on the pitch. What's wrong with having more than one leader? Let Hendo do the media and changing room stuff, others can manage their own departments.

Arsenal have five captains.

The fabric will allow him to approach the referee, walk right up to him, and gaze down from 7ft in the air to ask the cunt whether he is sure about that being a penalty. I think that would be much more effective than Milner or Henderson jogging over and swearing, before getting waived away like a bitch.
