So who is the best striker, midfielder, winger, LB, RB etc. and why?

I'll go for left back. Obviously, as in any position, people from different eras will call different players. for me, the answer is Stevie Nicholl. A brilliant defender in an era when we had a brilliant defense, but a proper attacking FB too.

Alan Kennedy left back.
The complete attacking full back with a nose for the big goal.
Well probably not see one as good as him in the foreseeable future either.
Can any of the senior members give me an inside of what Crazy horse was like at left back when he played a few games there?

Alan Hansen - Best CB we've had (at least in the last 40 years)
Kenny Dalglish and Luis Suarez - Best strike force (sorry Rushie, Beardo, Keegan, Robibe, Aldro, Owen)

Saw the title thread. Came in thinking 'Steve Nicol', but you were already there. Good work. He played LB, RB, RM, and CB. Consistently brilliant anywhere on the park.

Or John Barnes. Not sure.

I'm not arguing he is the best ever for LFC (so mildly on a tangent, although same theme), but for me, the best striker in my time of following Liverpool (since 1995ish) is Torres. In top form, he could do it all and was completely unplayable. Watching a season of him and Gerrard was a great time to be a Liverpool fan.

Imagine if we had Torres in his pomp with Suarez & Coutinho in the team!

For me:

442

Clemence (so I'm told)

Neal RB
Hansen CB
Hyppia CB
Nicol LB

LW Barnes
CM Souness
CM Gerrard
RW Dalglish

FW Suarez
FW Fowler

Aint no one beating that team, or even getting a draw out of them.

Emlyn Hughes not only has to be in the team he has to be captain. He was a great player and also our most inspirational player and his enthusiasm was inspiring to everyone (except Tommy smith 🙂

He has to play at right back simply because he wasn't as technically good as Hansen, Lawro, Hyypia etc for the CB positions and he couldn't get in ahead of Gerrard or Souness for CM.

In an effort to try and shoehorn all those who should be there in I've devised this team...................

...............................Clemence.............................
..............Hughes....Hansen...Lawro.......................
.....Gerrard........................................Whelan.........
...............Keegan.....Souness......Barnes..........
.......................Dalglish.......Suarez.............

Obviously not ideal having SG at right wing back but this team would destroy all-comers.

Subs:
Reina
Nicol
Hyypia
McDermott
Callaghan
Beardsley
Rush
Hunt

GK: Clemence (once I'd have nominated Reina, but not now).

RB: Neal for longevity, Babbel for all-round ability, Rob Jones probably the best out-and-out defender of them all. Personal choice would be Babbel but this may well be the hardest position of all to agree on.
CB: Lawrenson - sorry, you just can't break that combo up. Big Sami would be on the bench but not in the first eleven.
CB: Hansen - 'nuff said.
LB: Nicol - has to be in there somewhere, played on the left almost as often as on the right and there's a plethora of talent over on that side.

RM: Callaghan - possibly the most consistent Liverpool player I've ever seen
CM: Gerrard - good enough to play anywhere, but I'd ALWAYS start him at centre mid to spread his influence as widely as poss.
CM: Souness (capt.) - hard as nails, skill to match and the best skipper this club has ever had, bar none.
LM: Barnes - no contest.

FW: Dalglish - simply the best ever. BTW he has to play up front, not deeper, where he was only half the player.
FW: Rush - again, a combo you cannot break.

Hughes wouldn't get in my side - fine player, maybe the best all-rounder we've had but just not quite ahead of these other specialists. He'd be alongside Pepe, Sami, Suarez, Beardo, Robbie Fowler, Keegan, Ray Kennedy and Alec Lindsay on the bench.

Can only base it on players i've seen. Means I need to go 4-2-4

Reina
Babbel Hyypia Carragher
Gerrard Alonso Hammann
Suarez Fowler
Owen Torres

The lack of wide players shows how badly we've addressed the issue since 1992

That's a 3-3-4

That's a very, very good team. I don't think I could pick a team to beat that one.

good team, swap rush for keegan and drop the King back and you could be on to something...

Clem was top class till the day he left, so he has to beat Reina to the keeper's slot.

Lawler's a good shout and would be on the bench in my squad.

Drop Dalglish back and you make him ordinary. Big mistake.

That's very doable, it felt odd leaving Rushie out but Suarez is such a beast. Re:Keegan I always feel as if he's almost the forgotten man in these best 11 things because King Kenny took over from him and surpassed him as a player BUT Keegan was a truly magnificent footballer and should IMO get more plaudits for his role in our success than he does.

Before Keegan came in we were one of about 3 or 4 teams who competed at the top of the table, they were exciting times as no one team dominated and LFC, Leeds, Arsenal, Derby etc all shared the trophies around. Keegan's arrival was, for me, the pivotal moment when we went up a gear to dominate the league. I hate to equate him to a Scum player but he had the same talismanic affect that Cantona had when he joined United.

Totally agree about Ray Clemence. About 3 years ago I suggested that Reina was almost ready to eclipse Clem as the all time LFC goalie in my opinion but Reina's form dipped subsequently so Clem is still No.1 although Pepe pushed him close.

Like Doctor Mac, I find very little to argue with here - even the side comments on Souness, Dalglish, Neal and Lawrenson. Only suggestion to all is that Fairclough should always be #12.
