Apologies. Just saw this.
We were the biggest draw in the country then. He wanted to come. They took what we offered. That's how I remember it anyway.
Yeah that's right. We got Beardo a week later I think for 1.3mill or something. Great summer that.

I remember reading suggestions at the time that he didn't actually want to come North at first, and took some persuading.

I don't think he especially wanted to stay in England at all, but didn't get any offers from abroad. Not even sure he had that many - if any - offers from any other big clubs in England. There are conflicting reports about whether or not United wanted him, but even they weren't really the draw they are these days.

So if the offers weren't flooding in, and Watford were resigned to Barnes leaving then the low fee makes a little more sense. And it wasn't outrageously low for that time really I don't think.

£1.9m I believe 🙂

So more than twice what Barnes went for... there's no doubt he was undervalued.

Despite the player he was, there wasn't a scramble over Barnes' signature when he left Watford. Indeed, many Liverpool fans were non-plussed with the signing.

£1.9 million. Can you believe that was a British record fee then? Incredible. And Now Stephen Fletcher is going for £15 million. The world's gone mad I tell ya.

A mate of mine saw the new Beardsley-Aldridge-Barnes forward line in action in pre-season and was positively purring about it. They really hit the ground running at LFC, both individually and as a trio. After Rushy had left, some of us were wondering where the goals would come from. Didn't we soon find out. 😀

Presume someone's already mentioned Van Persie?

Of recent times, given the silly money that gets paid nowadays, that has to be up there as one of the best

£200k for Jan Molbypen - 12 years top class service

One Saturday I was working outside the house and had the TV set to teletext. I sent my 7/8 yo daughter in to see the score . She emerged to say that Liverpool were one nil up and that Molbypen had scored.

Haha. Reminds me of that line from Billy Connolly: "For years I thought a certain team from Glasgow was called Partick Thistle Nil".

Actually I seem to remember it a little differently. Barnes got off to a flyer for sure. But Beardo took 6 or 7 games to get going. I remember because he was (as Silver Sean just pointed out) a British record signing at the time and the press love to be negative with things like that. As we all know though they clicked fairly quickly!

EDIT : I could be wrong about Beardo starting a little slowly - I was only 12 at the time!

Well, it's equally possible that my memory's a fraction rosier than it should be - it was quite a while ago, besides which I loved watching Beardo play even before we signed him, because even on a quiet day he'd do something which made me think "Now that's class".

Can't really complain if he was at full revs after 6 games anyway!

Indeed! - I have to say I like threads like this. You know where we all share a common opinion about former players. Beardo was simply class. His performance in that drubbing of Forest was breathtaking! 1.9 million! Wow! I did a quick check of what that is worth today and it came out at 3.9million - That can't be right surely!

It's not. Inflation is mainly caused by the amount of money in circulation, and the amount of money available to football clubs exploded when Sky got involved, and has continued to explode with every new TV deal since.

The inflation in transfer fees and wages is almost completely separate from normal RPI/CPI.

I'd estimate that £1.9m to be something like £30 - 35m in today's terms, btw.

That was the most scintillating football I have ever experienced - I was crestfallen when Rushy left but fuck me did we make up for his departure. I feel sad for our younger fans who never got to see us then

Well I thought it couldn't be right. I was going off this http://safalra.com/other/historical-uk-inflation-price-conversion/ - I remember when Baggio went for 7 million. At the time I thought that was a staggering amount for a player. Divine ponytail or not.

Ha, the first silly money transfer I remember was Gianluigi Lentini to Milan for £13m back in about 1991. If that's right then the British record at the time was the £2.9m we paid for Dean Saunders. It wasn't for nothing that Italian football seemed impossibly glamorous back then.

Yes - puts our current crop of players into perspective - I very much doubt Suarez would get off the bench into that side.
