Best bargain ever

I don't agree with that. Had Suarez been in that squad he'd have played his fair quota of games. The only player in that forward line who would have scored more goals than Suarez was Aldo, and he was a FAR more limited footballer than Suarez overall.

Actually I seem to remember it a little differently. Barnes got off to a flyer for sure. But Beardo took 6 or 7 games to get going. I remember because he was (as Silver Sean just pointed out) a British record signing at the time and the press love to be negative with things like that. As we all know though they clicked fairly quickly!

EDIT : I could be wrong about Beardo starting a little slowly - I was only 12 at the time!
You are right that there was that perception at the time, though Liverpool were breathtaking from the start. Beardsley was less noticeable in comparison to Barnes who took the early headlines with some brilliant stuff and Aldo who scored in the first several games of the season. Also Stevie Nicol was amazing. Beardsley took a little longer to come into his own, but as JJ says, he was obviously going to be something special. In that first game the 3 new players combined for Aldridge's header ... and Stevie Nicol won it late with a bullet header from the edge of the box. There have been many great times over the years as a Liverpool fan, but that season we took it to a different plane. I remember John Sillett positively drooling in his praise after we had torn apart his Coventry team.

I wonder if that was the year Stevie Nicol scored a hatrick against Newcastle? A defender!!!! What a player!

Yes - that was the year. Did he play as a defender in that game? He was often moved up to right midfield and I think may have played there on that day ... though for most of that season he was devastating behind John Barnes on the left.

Hmmm I wonder. I remember reading about it in the paper the day after. I was a nipper then but I remember being gobsmacked by how good they were playing and Nicol scoring a hatrick just seemed unreal. 🙂

Stevie Nicol was a wonderful player. There are a fair number of players who can "do a job" in more than one position, but Stevie Nicol was top quality absolutely anywhere in defence or midfield, good enough for any first team in whichever of those positions you care to name.

I think Nicol was playing RB when he scored the hat trick. I'm sure the game was live on ITV.

I have a mate who has only started watching footy in the last 10/15 years and thinks Suarez is the Dog's. I sent him this vid to put him in his place.

Yup, away to Newcastle. Third goal was a dink over the keeper from memory.

In recent times, the best bargain I can think of is Dortmund buying Shinji Kagawa for 350K euros.

Yep, surprising aswell because he was already quite established in the Japanese league.

I thought I already told you punks that transfer fee inflation is on a completely different scale from regular RPI. As a rough guide, the £1.9m paid for Beardsley would convert to about £30m today. Anything before about 1990 needs *at least* a 15 factor applied to it, and I'd reckon that even the £2.6m we paid for Hyypia would be around £7m today.

Shhh! Some of us like to pretend that the influence of Sky and multi-million pound sponsorship deals, etc, didn't happen.
