That was a bit of a strange game. I didn't expect Besiktas to sit back as much as they did. As the game wore on it was pretty much attack vs defence and it almost paid off thanks to a few our players having (relative) stinkers.

Coutinho looked tired and off his game, Can was all over the place, Sturridge showing too much of the bad side of his game and not enough of the good.

With that in mind it was good to get the win and a clean sheet.

Motta and the rest of the Besiktas lot will probably be relieved he's out of the next game. Ibe ruined him.

Three points

I'm fucking freezing and that was shit

Skrtel MOM

Ibe is gonna be one hell of a player

Perhaps he's forgetting that he's still part of the team and hasn't set sail into the sunset just yet.

What a shit thing to come out with on TV.

He's not the brightest. I was cringing when they where going on about him being our future manager during the build-up.

Just no on that one.

SG has just said Balo has been disrespectful.

Big statement....

He's right, but the club could have done without him piping up as a pundit about it. A bit naff all round: if Mario is on the pitch I think he SHOULD take the pens - he's damn sight better at them than Studge or Hendo - but he was wrong to challenge Hendo, and Studge was out of order moaning about it seconds before Mario took it.

Good : Ibe (MoM), Sakho, Ming (very good save), Moreno, Balo
Ave : Lallana, Allen, Coutinho, Skrtel, Lovren
Poor : Hendo,
Very Poor (aka abysmal) : Can, Sturridge.

We spend far too much time receiving the ball with our backs to goal.

I think let's try to keep this thread about the game itself and the performance, not the penalty incident (there are other threads for that).

I think Besiktas played really, really well. They were well-prepared and well-coached; pressed in the right moments and dropped off when needed. Some of their defending was bordering on the heroic and they did enough in attack to score an away goal, but were denied by Mignolet and a couple of good blocks from Skrtel. Our players seemed to have been taken by surprise by how calm and professional Besiktas were; it was the polar opposite of the team that lost 8:0 at Anfield seven years ago.

I want to know what was wrong with Can. Did playing against Turks affect him mentally? Is he tired? Whatever it is, this was the worst I've seen him play for LFC; his head was just not in the game. By contrast Sakho, who we all thought needed a rest, looked totally fine and Skrtel was sharp well. Lovren had an error-free cameo (if you don't count the yellow card) again as well.

I'm disappointed with Allen. Once again whenever his teammates don't play particularly well, his own play becomes way too timid and cautious. We needed a lift from a fresh player who was supposedly hitting good form; instead he was the first one to be substituted. Amazingly, Can, who had an all-around bad game, still managed to be an improvement on Allen in midfield.

Coutinho needs a rest. I would start Sterling in his place vs Southampton. Sturridge had these kinds of games last season too; this is why he is not world class yet.

On the positive side, Ibe was a breath of fresh air every time he got the ball (and teammates all saw that and fed him a lot) and Balotelli looked very good again. I would consider resting Lallana vs Southampton too and starting with the front 3 of Sturridge, Sterling and Balotelli. And bring on Markovic at AM if we need to change it up.

One more small positive – Glen Johnson was not in the squad. Which means Lovren is finally officially ahead of him in the pecking order at RCB, as he should be. And Manquillo at RB too.

A bit of a reality check for Can today. Hopefully it will do him a world of good.

I would be tempted to stick him in midfield ahead of Allen for the Southampton game.

Whilst I agree with the general comments on Allen (though he did OK defensively) I'd categorically deny that Can was an improvement, he was as horrendous there as he was at RCB. Two or three times, in the short time he was there, giving the ball away in dangerous positions and passing poorly too.

2 things that stand out;

1 - Sturridge needs to pass the fucking ball. Release earlier, take less touches, be less selfish at time. Just pass the fucking thing.

2 - Jordan Ibe is ridiculous. Like, absolutely fucking ridiculous. Every full-back in Europe is gonna shit themselves playing against this kid. What a player he could be.

I like how Rodgers is managing Lovren at the moment; bringing him on as a sub in a few games eases him into an already-established setup, while also making sure he gets minutes to shake off some rust and also not get too disgruntled. I also think Rodgers handled this game well in the second half, sticking with three at the back to make sure we stayed solid defensively. Even though Besiktas wasn't attacking much, it was important we didn't concede an away goal by being overzealous in trying to score, so I think he did well in not taking a risk there.

Yeah, 1:0 win is a pretty good result to take on the road, one away goal will pretty much kill off the tie. And to make it even better, Besiktas will miss two of their starting defenders through suspension and their starting goalkeeper through injury.

You know whats crept into this team of late?

The belief that we'll win games late on if we keep attacking. It's almost getting to the point that I expect us to get that needed late goal in the last 10 minutes or so and don't feel panicked when we miss chances.

One look at our bench tonight is enough for optimism.

It occurred to me watching Ibe bulldoze his way past Motta a couple times that it's quite unusual for a winger like Ibe to have the physique he does. Can anyone think of a good player to compare him to?

Ronaldo!?

Coincidentally I was discussing this with my brother at the match. I suggested Maradona! 🙂

He's built and plays a bit like Oxlaide-Chamberlain I think and similarly strong from a young age.

Looking like a great decision to recall him.

Yes. I liked his attitude towards Balotelli after the pen - another sign of a captain in waiting - but he had a bit of a shocker tonight.

Ibe is hilariously good. Defender was throwing in the towel towards the end. Ibe has the ability to go down the line by breezing past his man or cutting in by, yep, breezing past his man. He mixes it up so often that the defender is unsure whether he's going down the line or cutting in. The defender can't show him outside because Ibe will take him to the cleaners and no self respecting full back should allow him inside so yeah he's screwed.

My only worry with Ibe is that he'll start to hold onto the ball a little too long but at the moment he is scary good.
