Benteke - BOOOOOO the puns

We've done really good business so far this window.

If we don't spoil that by blowing far too much cash on an overrated striker who doesn't suit our system I'd be surprised.

I wouldn't say really good. More like OK to decent. Clyne and Gomez are great deals, the others are questionable - mainly because I'm not convinced any of them should've been priorities.

Ha ha.. got people looking though...

Seriously though it has been quiet on the Rodgers front on the Offal of late..

Nothing said or quoted from Rodger's in respect of the signings we have made..

Even with Firminho.. Our high profile signing...

All a little bizarre..

I can't remember a time when it has been so quiet from a manager over the clubs signings..

Usually the managers thoughts are called upon when announcing a signing and what he expects them to bring to the team..

Not a dickiebird... diddly squat..

Maybe July 1st will reveal all..

Rodgers is preparing his speech as we speak..

*groans*

If there's nothing from him on their unveiling on July 1st, maybe you'll be on to something Ninja, but not until then.

nah he is writing his thrilling speech as we speak.. cant wait...

it will consist of the words 'project', 'options' and something like... 'I always say a squad is like a good meal - I'm not a great cook, but a good meal takes a wee bit of time'...

and he will waffle some more.. and we will fall asleep..

Still be interesting to see how he lines us up next season, with Benteke up top..

Considering he gets the piss ripped out of almost anything he says these days it's no wonder he's schtum now.

If I was him I'd get my head down and get to training and preparation - his jobs on the line after all. His Pressers should be brief and factual, the Press aren't his friends and never will be - fuck them.

He'll know that it's show rather than tell time.

Nah. Don't see that myself.

There's no way the owners didn't/don't encourage him to be so open with the press, it's all about increasing the brand awareness & other such shit.

I bet you can't wait.

Carroll had about 30 goals from his previous 60 games when we signed him. He had about 1 in 3 over his career when we signed him, roughly the same as Benteke had at the same age in the Belgian league.

It wasn't that outlandish a claim.

Yep.

I vaguely remember him scoring 11 goals or something in his first 10 games the season before we signed him. He hit a purple patch for about 2 seasons out of the 30 he seemed to have at Newcastle.

Im not advocating Benteke, but at least hes done it over a few seasons, Carroll had 6 months at the top level.

As far as their respective qualities go, it is a lazy comparison. We need someone with movement and versatility in attack, but the way people are talking about Benteke is as though he's a paceless lanky beacon who just stands there having balls pumped to him. Someone said he needs crosses because thats the main source of his goals. Watch his goals from last season, they're everything but.

He's probably not a raging alkie who will get photographed passed out in Bumper so he's an improvement there.

For me, part of the problem is - where do we play Benteke when Sturridge is fit?

We effectively play with 3 forwards - with 2 attacking from deep & 1 up front or 2 upfront and 1 behind.

So, for those 6 positions we now have Sturridge, Ings, Origi, Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana, Ibe & Markovic.

That's presuming we offload Sterling, Borini, Lambert & Ballotelli.

So - spending $30m+ on Benteke - a good player, but one that will need a more defined role as he's not going to be one of the players that can attack from deep - seems a bit odd.

Unless Origi and at least one of either Markovic or Ibe is going on loan - because I think we'll damage their progress by not having them play regular football.

Your problem gets resolved by Sturridge never being fit.
