Ben Davies

Rio Ferdinand was almost one inch taller. Oh yeah, a massive concern. He'll need a booster seat on the coach.

[article]Ben Davies will undergo a Liverpool medical after they had a £2million bid accepted by Preston North End, Football Insider can reveal.

This site exclusively broke the news at 4.24pm on Sunday (31st January) that the Merseysiders had made a blockbuster late move for the centre-back.

A Liverpool source has told Football Insider that Liverpool’s offer for the central defender, 25, has been accepted and he has now been granted permission to head to Anfield for a medical and to discuss personal terms.

As revealed by Football Insider on Thursday, Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg is headed to Preston on loan as part of the agreement.

That is a crushing blow to Davies’ other suitors Celtic and Bournemouth, who have been locked in a battle to sign him in recent days.

Celtic stepped up their pursuit earlier on Sunday and had held talks over signing the Preston product immediately rather than on a pre-contract deal.

He is out of contract at Preston at the end of the season and, as revealed by Football Insider earlier this month, rejected a club-record £17,000-a-week contract to stay at Deepdale.

That signalled to suitors he was ready to end his spell at North End, where he has spent his entire career.

Davies has remained a key man in Alex Neil’s squad despite doubts over his future.

He could now have played the last of his 145 matches for Preston, 19 of which have come in this season’s Championship.

Can't believe they're calling it a blockbuster signing hahahaha

Sounds good. But Phillips should keep his place after the last two games.
True but He’s good. It’s a cute acquisition that could be funky. He’s cut his teeth in The lower leagues. He’s a bruiser that might not be quickest but he’s nails. I like this lots.

Yeah, I like my CB's taller, but he's not exactly short. About the same height as Gomez.
Ya but Gomez is rubbish in the air and gas rapid pace to make up it and is really good on the ball.

So unless he’s rapid which apparently he isn’t I’d have liked him taller but hey ho. Certainly looks promising and Celtic have a great track record in situations like this.

John Terry was good in the air and he's about the same height as well.

Could this possibly be Preston's apology to me? Weirdly, one after another of my Scouse relations retired to Preston when I was a kid. I think they thought there'd be potatoes there. That's what got them from Ireland to Liverpool, and they were never satiated. Anyway, it meant that I had to spend just about every summer holiday based in Preston, visiting rellies. Can you imagine how exciting that was?? I've been waiting all this time for payback.

Looks like a no nonsense defender to me.

He goes to ground a LOT (I counted 7 of the first 9 tackles in that video), that'll have to stop. Also on the plus side a LOT of goal involvement and a good left foot (long passes), not sure about pace, he seems to be more about positioning than pace. Of course that's just from that video and reality could be something else.

His height is a concern but at least we have another body to throw on the fire.
I can't see that being a concern - at all. If you watched that video you'll have seen an imposing and strong header of the ball in both defence and attack, so a very good spring. 6' 1" isn't short, not many strikers taller.

No but plenty of defenders are who come up for set pieces. If the other CB is Henderson that leaves us tiny at the back.

Hardly. You are looking at it only as it stands today. Once VvD is back then it isn't such an issue. Or whenever Matip plays this season. Considering the way we play, on the ground & passing skills, and an ability to win headers aimed at strikers (see Nat vs West Ham), are far more important. Though even that said the man seems to have a powerful spring so can probably compete well with players taller than him (a la Terry).

It's very confusing - virtually every football page (inc. LFC official fandom) has him listed as 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) whereas the Celeb pages have him down as 1.82 (6').

He's about 5'11. There's footage of him saying himself that he's under 6 foot.

Ha well he’s a freak in the air with an incredible leap and super strength and timing not to mention he’s 6 2.
Just read an article that he is quite quick, and reads the game well. I think this is the guy we should build up only to .... never mind

He’s one of us north end wools. I see him round crosby all the time. He doesn’t tower over me and I’m 5’8. I’d be surprised if he’s a 6 footer.

Lawro saying that he isn't better than Philips.

The Liverpool legend told BBC Sport: "Ben Davies has done well at Preston and has let his contract run down so he was going to move on in the summer. If he'd gone to Celtic, which I'd heard had been agreed, then I was thinking he could do well there, but being honest I didn't really see him as being good enough to be on Liverpool's radar.

"He's a real steady Eddie. He's left-footed and quick enough but he's not got phenomenal pace or anything like that. He's been good in the Championship, very good.

"I've watched him and thought, up against the extra nous and quality you get in the Premier League, on top of extra pace, it will be a test for him. You wouldn't want to just throw him in to face Manchester City next Sunday, put it that way.

"This is obviously a great move for him, I just can't see him getting near the first team. Nat Phillips has done well when he's come in and he is probably a better player.

"So, Davies would be behind him and also Rhys Williams, so even before Joel Matip comes back and the other two long-term injured players - Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez - he is going to be below them on the list. And Fabinho and Jordan Henderson too.

"I am not sure he will play very much at Liverpool, but the experience alone should be fabulous. I hope he experiences playing in the first team, but even if he is just sitting on the bench then it is still great for him.

"He has come through the ranks at Preston, learned his trade with loan spells in the lower divisions and improved a lot. He has done really well.

"Regardless of whether he gets a chance or not, it is a great move for him and Ben is a lovely lad. I've got to know him over the years and with people like that, you just think 'great opportunity and good luck to you.'"

Either Lawro's is pissed off because he's leaving his boyhood team Preston or he's knows nothing.
Behind Rhys? Has he seen the kid play?
I don't want to be too hard on him but he isn't even Championship lvl. I mean why is Klopp buying a defender in that case?

Just based on the compilation, it looks like Davies has the fundamentals down for a Klopp CB, meaning he's got good passing and ball control. We can work with the rest. Yes he's going to be a project but it's not as bad as Lawro is making it look.

The fee is 1,6 mill aswell, with only 500k upfront. So if it doesnt work out, we'll get 2-3 times more than that back if he moves on.

Lawro is talking shit if he thinks he'll be behind Nat and Rhys. I can see an argument in Nat keeping his place when playing well, but at the same time perhaps there is a feeling that Davies will be more consistent and transform the way we play from the back (compared to having Nat or Rhys back there).
