I really wanted rafa to dig in his heels and tell alonso he had to fullfil his contract but once the transfer request came in it was over. we were even prepared to let gerrard go when he made it clear he wanted out. I think its more the harmony of the squad than the needs of the player that comes into a manager's thinking when a player expresses a desire to leave.

All kept at their clubs for an extra year (sometimes more) after expressing a desire to leave. Sometimes - yes, you do have to keep a player against their will if it's to the betterment(?) of the team.
