Right, imagine if we'd kept Alonso and we'd sold Mascherano for a shitload of cash, do you think we'd still be in a fucked up position unable to play football, or would we be topping the table and battering everyone in sight?

Just curious.

Relying on a Mascherano and Lucas partnership has fucked us up no doubt. An Alonso/Lucas midfield is a far more creative pairing than Mascherano/Lucas but it's not the main reason for such a shit season. Injuries to the only half decent striker we have on the books has seen to that.

Mascherano is marvelous. Its frustrating how he's always put in alonso debates.

It's cos people think it was a one or t'other type thing i guess.

Maybe, but people seem to lump the teo together. Alonso chose to leave. I fail to see why masher always gets dragged into a comparison thing with him.

I think Mascher may well have chosen to leave if some of those reports were true back in August.

We'd be in third with a few more points but, most significantly, we'd actually look like we have a clue on the pitch despite some inconsistencies. Rather than alternating between decent and relegation-worthy from week to week.

Maybe, but I'm not convinced. Without Masher running interference beside him (and Lucas as Masher's stand-in) Alonso would have had a FAR harder time of it.

So now its because we let Alonso go we performed poorly since beginning of the season? What makes you fucking think that Rafa would spend the money wisely on Mascher's sale instead of Alonso? Do you fucking know who will he sign??

Doesn't make any difference. Rafa's record in signing players are average and i can bet you had Rafa sold Mascher last summer ahead of Alonso, we would still fucking sign Aquilani for replacement. On top of that he wasted another 17 million on a right back which we don't need. His summer transfer record are absolutely poor. We suffered because of that. To add to that his cautious and tinkering make it worst.

Its all bollocks. He doesn't want to leave.

In answer to the question, would our current position have been affected if we had lost Mascher rather than Alonso?

I think it would have made little difference. The issue is that without Torres we are completely toothless up front.
Alright it could be argued with Xabi we might have scored more goals, but he wasn't a prolific scorer himself, and without decent strikers up front any potential assists would have no doubt been spurned,

Agree exactly with what Vlad and Sheik have said. We're toothless up front and have lost our only worthwhile striker. That should never have been allowed to happen.

It was completely negligent of the club, and I think Benitez is as culpable as anyone on that score.
When we signed Keane, we were still a striker short. We let Keane go 12 months ago, and regardless of what happened in the summer as regards people leaving, or funding, a striker should have been the priority.
A team challenging for the PL should have at least three good strikers and three plus a decent back-up would be preferable. We have one, and for a large lump of the season we have not had that.

Kuyt is a decent striker, but yeah I largely agree.

We might have been okay had Dirk and Yossi maintained last seasons magical form, but they couldn't and here we are.

In my little world Dirk would be (just about) the back-up striker I spoke of , not one of the two main strikers

I don't agree that we'd have seen little difference. One of the major contributory factors in our awful losing run was a central midfield lost at sea.

Our record with Torres starting before he got injured at the start of the season - W(6), D(0), L(4).

That's awful.

a player should never be kept against his will, that shit always ends badly.

Apart from when it's Manchester United, and keeping that player for an extra year wins you the League and gets you to the European Cup Final.

Solid work Neil.
