I do wonder if we will drop the high line back a tad with matip and Gomez now, matip.w little slower to compensate for VVD loss. What will help though is the return of Alisson.

Anybody able to recall how Ginsoak coped or changed his team when Rio missed the drug test and was banned for a year or so? Didn't they still win the league during that period? Yeah they didn't have to compete with gulf state money or a global pandemic, but there could be some positives to take from that period...

I'm still in a state of disbelief and depressed over the whole VvD injury and offsides from that match. So I came across this and thought I'd give it a watch, at least it brought a smile or two to my face :

criminal not to replay that Messi goal

I think it would be a mistake to defend deeper. IMHO the weaker the defence, the more attacking you should be. Defend in their half. Our defence now looks shaky at corners, and - so long as Adrian is in goal - uneasy playing out from the back, so be aggressive and stay high up the pitch.

Maybe so, especially considering Adrian not Allison in goal.
But on the other hand, a more compact team helps the shaky defense, and our attackers are great on the counter, more than our defenders I would say. But then again, we are weak defensively in the air without VVD. Hmm...

Matip can get his head to crosses well enough provided all you want him to do is clear it. It can be a bit of a lottery where his headers actually fall, but surely that can be improved by the appropriate coaching. Even Gomez isn't as poor in the air when playing CB as he is at RB, when teams pass the ball over him all the time.

He was at fault for Keane's goal and partly at fault for not blocking off CL's run which any good CB should have done, he was actually ball-watching and didn't even seem to be aware of the run, he left it all up to Robbo. So, involved in conceding two headed goals, smack, bang in the centre of his zone neither more than 5-6m out, i.e. very poor defending!

Not to disagree, but none of that is directly on point, which concerned Gomez' actual ability in the air. There's no question his judgment needs to improve at times.

The thing is Gomez always, always has a really long adjustment/bedding in period. He did last season too, then when he eventually comes good he has always been remarkably consistent.

Also bearing in mind that he looked a leader on the pitch last season when he was one of the few senior players on the pitch against Everton, so the optimistic part of me thinks perhaps it will enable that side of his game to shine without the colossus that is VVD alongside him.

Ezequiel Garay is the only free agent that springs to mind.
[article]Liverpool have been offered the chance to plug their defensive gap with a tempting offer to sign Ezequiel Garay.

The experienced Argentine defender is without a club having left Valencia at the end of his deal following the 2019/20 season.

Despite being 34, it’s perhaps surprising the veteran defender did not get hooked up with a new club.

With Liverpool reeling from the long-term loss of Virgil van Dijk, they have been left with a hole to fill in their defence.

The Holland star looks set to miss most of the season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Everton.

Jordan Pickford’s reckless challenge forced the defender off the pitch and he will now undergo knee surgery.

The challenge which left the Dutchman’s season wrecked is, according to Gini Wijnaldum, causing Liverpool’s stars to have ‘sleepless nights’.

However, free agent Garay could prove an excellent short-term solution and the answer to their problems.

According to Fijaches, Garay’s agent has already made contact with Liverpool to offer his client’s services.

Furthermore, his agent has handed Liverpool a tempting double incentive to consider.

Firstly, it’s reported Garay will not command high wages and will happily move to Anfield for a modest wage.

Secondly, Garay will not seek a lengthy deal and will happily sign an initial one-year deal. That would give Liverpool the top-class cover they need to cover Van Dijk’s absence.

Garay has 34 Argentina caps to his name and also counts Real Madrid, Zenit and Benfica among his former clubs.

Spanish outlet Fijaches now claims Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool are giving serious thought to signing Garay.[/article]

Did we not do something similar under Rafa ? Turned out shit right ?

Garay : 1.88 / 34 yo. Released by Valencia after 4 yrs. Wages £4m.

WhoScored :

+ Strengths

Blocking the ball - Very Strong
Concentration - Strong

Tackling - Weak
Ezequiel Garay's Style of Play

Does not dive into tackles
Clears the ball out of defence often

I'd heard , although this was all based of the statement the club made using the word 'ligaments' rather than the singular 'ligament' that they fear it's his MCL and ACL which could obviously put in him in that camp of post serious injury players who can't accelerate ,leap , challenge the way theyve always done for an extensive period of time/ ever

That is all based of the semantics of the club's statement and I have no doubt an ultra elite sportsman will have the kitchen sink and as many horse placentas as it takes to make him right

Loads of players have had ACL injuries or similar and come back from it at the same level. Virgil has the best available to him from sports scientists and rehabilitation programs and support.
Dont think there is anything to worry about.
But he wont be back until next season. That much is clear.

There's obviously something to worry about. It's the thing we're all worried about.

Obivously related to everything around the injury and the effect it has on us as a team. I meant more in terms of some comments made by Ornstein to create likes and views on his podcast.

We can only hope for the best. It's the sort of injury that could completely change the course of the next 4 years under Klopp. I really did expect us to win multiple trophies with this squad till 2024. The quality of the group in general is outstanding and we supplemented it well this summer. van Dijk is a crucial crucial part of it though - literally the best defender in the world - along with Alisson, he was completely transformative for this squad of players.

Now we'll get through this season in some way, but it's difficult to see us win either the league or the CL without him. That's not the end of the world because this group of players is still young enough to have another 2-3 year window of contention. But for that, we really do need to have him come back and be at least 90% as good as he was. There have been a few sportsmen (at least in recent years) who've come back from gruesome knee injuries and still played at a very high level. So here's hoping that his name is added to that list of players.

Zlatan did his at 35..

When Zlatan Ibrahimovic made his return from an ACL injury last weekend, he declared that ‘lions don’t recover like humans’. But a new surgical technique could be behind the striker’s miraculous seven-month recovery and is set to accelerate the rehabilitation of a host of other Premier League stars.

An ACL injury typically sidelines a player for nine months – but can take even longer depending on the severity of the injury. “The traditional way to repair the damaged knee involves removing part of a player’s hamstring and using that to create a new ACL,” says consultant orthopedic surgeon, Mark Frame. “It takes a long time for it to fuse to the bone and to restore strength in the hamstrings and quadriceps, because they’re inactive for so long during this process.

However, knee surgeons are now able to use a different type of operation, which could get players back on the pitch faster. “Advances in keyhole surgery mean we can repair the existing ACL, using a technique known as an arthrex internal brace repair, rather than taking tissue from the hamstring,” says Frame. “We can also place it back in its original position, which reduces the amount of bone which needs removing and hardware implanting. A number of Premier League players have had this type of surgery and have returned quicker."
