Yay! Can't watch as I'm in office. Who scored?

Sunil Chetri, who else! ... penalty.

Korea leading 3-1 after 25

why are india and china so rubbish at football? all those people, you'd think they'd be able to find 11 decent players somewhere or other.

Football and all sports apart from cricket in general are a joke in India. There is zero infrastructure, leagues that barely sustain itself, and a pitiful lack of money. As with all things, it's changing. But it'll take a lot of time. No kid in his right mind in India would want to take up football as a career.

Same applies to England really.

I read in some dubious source (I forget where, a broadhseet) that physically they can't twist as well or something. Not saying I agree of course, as they seem to be excellent at cricket (well maybe not china), but if west african's are acknowledged as generally being bigger and stronger than europeans, I guess it's feasible, if deemed inappropriate.

Disclaimer - not saying I agree, I just read it in a paper.

*can of worms open*

Heard it as well, don't know if it's a stereotype that Asians are small and short but the same goes for South Americans in general.
The real issue IMO is that there isn't a football culture there.
In other places in the world you grow up watching football and your father or someone in your family probably played football. So it's in your blood in a matter of speaking.
I bet that if the chinese really start focusing on football from grassroots level, investing money, building pitches, bringing in foreign coaches, in 20-30 years they'll be among the top nations in the world.

Yep. As I say, the fact they're great at other mobile sports seems to disprove it anyway. Wish I could find the article to read it again properly, but it was a couple of years ago now.

ind_subrata_paul_goalkeeper_3x2.jpg

India’s never-say-die attitude has been praised by the Korean media despite the Bhangra Boys’ 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Taeguk Warriors on Tuesday.

Ji Dong-won scored twice as the Koreans sealed their place in the quarter-finals, while Koo Ja-cheol and substitute Son Heung-min also got on the scoresheet for the Taeguk Warriors. Sunil Chhetri converted a 12th-minute penalty for Bob Houghton's men.

The ‘Seoul’ newspaper praised Indian goalkeeper Subrata Paul in an article headlined ‘Indian team GK, 16 times super-save! Who is this guy?’ and said that the custodian’s heroics had impressed Korean fans.

Korea had 38 shots in total, 20 of them on goal, out of which Paul saved 16.

’My Daily’, another Korean newspaper, said Paul was the “real MVP†for Korean fans after billing him as the ‘Spiderman’.

Legend 🙂

Paul is an excellent shot-stopper but that's of course only one part of what goalkeeping's about. He is however good enough to come and start for a small-ish team in Europe (maybe Championship level) and I think it'll help him progress a lot as a player.

Watching the first quarter final, Japan vs. Qatar.

Love watching Yasuhito Endo.

The Asian Pirlo! Makes it look so effortless.

1-1, great goal from Japan & Kagawa.

Honda was immense in the setting up of the goal.

The Uzbecks have surprised a few teams in the last year, they look to have really come on and shouldn't be so easily ruled out.

South Korea should be the best in the other half of the draw.

All teams left are good enough to make the final.

It's certainly not a straight forward waltz into the final for Australia ... Iraq may not be a world powerhouse but they've always given Australia trouble, and I'm pretty sure in the past 5 years you can't separate them when it comes head to head wins.

Uzbekistan is a side I enjoy watching, so much talent, but lack of mental toughness lets them down.

Good players in Djeparov, Shatskikh, Bakaev... on their day they can beat anyone in Asia.

Tonight should be cracking - Aussies v Iraq, Korea v Iran.

Considering how good they are at diving and gymnastics I'd say that theory possibly doesn't hold much merit.

Kewell scores in the 118th minute to win it for the Aussies.
